Riverboat Gaming Trends Regional Summaries CATEGORY 2000/01 1999/00 % +/- The tourism sector, an important indicator of the local economy, had a strong and healthy 2000. Hotel/motel sales rose by $822 million (+10.7%) over the year. Convention bookings were up 11.9% for the quarter and 1.5% for the year. More people deplaned at the airport, a 4.7% increase in 2000 over 1999. The average hotel room rate was $133.60 in the fourth quarter of 2000, $5.50 (4.3%) more than the fourth quarter of 1999. However, additional hotel rooms meant that the hotel occupancy rate dropped to 69.8% in the fourth quarter, 1.6 percentage points lower than a year ago. Hotel/motel sales are predicted to increase 11.9% in 2001 and 5.7% in 2002.
