Brucellosis alert Upper Hunter dog owners have been warned to look out for an illness that can affect dogs and humans. Brucellosis is a bacteria that mainly affects feral pigs but can spread to dogs and humans. Dogs generally contract the bacteria from eating raw pig meat or hunting. Dogs which mate with an infected dog and pups born to an infected mother are also at risk. Humans can catch the disease if an open wound has contact with a pig. A dog from Aberdeen has tested positive for brucellosis. It had been hunting in the Murrurundi and Blackville area. Dogs generally don t show symptoms, so it s important to contact your vet if you suspect your dog has been exposed. Humans generally exhibit flu like symptoms, the bacteria is particularly dangerous for pregnant women as it can cause spontaneous miscarriage. Driving the Hunter! Record-breaking donation for Singleton A small and hardworking team of local people has more than doubled its efforts to raise a record-breaking $145,000 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. The amount is the highest ever donated from the Hunter s many Support Groups. During last year the Singleton Support Group helped organise a number of events and activities including trivia nights, bus trips, money tins, donations and Christmas wrapping services at Big W. Secretary Danny Eather says the success clearly refl ects the generosity of the local area. The collective effort is an outstanding achievement. Our group works brilliantly together and with the community to make sure the Rescue Helicopter can serve our region whenever and wherever it s needed. Mr Eather said. It s been a tough time for Singleton in terms of employment and rising living costs which just makes it so inspiring to see support remaining strong. According to Service General Manager, Richard Jones, volunteers are the lifeblood of the Service. The fundraising efforts from the Singleton community are really quite astonishing, Mr Jones said. On 6 December 2015 the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service celebrated 40 years since it began as a weekend beach patrol. Today it operates as a 24-hour-a-day aeromedical service which has undertaken more than 30,000 missions and helped to save thousands of lives.
