S o u t h e r n N e v a d a C h a p t e r, I n c. # 2 7 3 5 The Director s Saddle Well here we are in June! Half the year gone already. First a big Bravo Zulu to Larry Preston, Larry Kusler, and all the volunteers that made the Golf Tournament on behalf of the Nation of Patriots such a big success. Also my thanks to the Road Captains for the Pre-Ride and Double D, along with Claudia and her volunteers for the Alzheimer's Poker Run, and lastly to all those that came in support of one and in some cases several of these events. The Chapter was called on and YOU ALL delivered. J U N E, 2 0 1 3 Now we are asking for your support in the upcoming 4 th of July Fireworks sales. Tracy only needs one or two helpers 3 times a day from 29 June through the 4 th of July. The time slots are in 4-hour blocks but if you can only do two hours don t be bashful. We also need various equipment to run the booth. So if you can volunteer yourself or gear please contact Tracy for more information. So what do you think of when you hear June? Is it Flag Day? Commemorating the adoption of the flag of the United States by the Second Continental Congress in 1777? Is it the Army s Birthday, that is also celebrated on this date? How about Father s Day? (Personally, I m not much on Father s Day! Maybe it was seeing my Dad get all those neckties and pajamas every year on that date?) Or is it the Summer Solstice marking the official beginning of summer? S.N.H.O.G. Continued from page 1 Director s Saddle...continued The Director s Saddle...continued Actually, whenever I hear the word JUNE I think of the female name. Like many of the readers, I grew up during a time when female names like April, May, June and on occasion a September were typical names. But for me, my mind immediately jumps to June Havoc. Why? I have absolutely no clue! I would have thought that I would relate June to June Allyson a much better known actress and the typical girl-nextdoor and her portrayal of Jo in Little Women. Maybe it s because June Havoc was the Baby June of Gypsy and Gypsy Rose Lee was her sister, or maybe it s because one of the earliest movies I saw (on TV) was My Sister Eileen, or an ill-fated TV show named after her in the early 60s. The mind tends to pigeon hole things in life and what and why remain pretty much a mystery... at least to me. A song, a smell, everyone can relate something or someone to that special song or smell. In some instances we vividly remember why, in others the whys are long lost, or forgotten. But, one thing I hope everyone will not forget is where this article started out Flag Day! Have one for the home? Fly it! Have one for the bike? Display it! Go one step better. Let everyday be Flag Day. I think George M Cohan put it best when he wrote all the way back in 1906: You're a grand old flag, You're a highflying flag And forever in peace may you wave. You're the emblem of The land I love. The home of the free and the brave. Ev'ry heart beats true 'Neath the Red, White and Blue, Where there's never a boast or brag. But should auld acquaintance be forgot, Keep your eye on the grand old flag. And when Old Glory starts to get that weathered, ratty looking, or otherwise is no longer a fitting emblem for display, destroy it in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Enjoy June and to all you Dads, and Granddads, Happy Father s Day, and ladies no neckties or pajamas! AJ Page 2

Road Captain s Message By LARRY PRESTON Road Captains Letter Larry Preston The summer riding season is upon us and even though the summer begins on June 21, 2013, there are a lot of things we need to do to make sure we have the correct equipment and our bikes are in top working order. First of all, the 100+ degree weather means we all need to be thinking about proper hydration and proper cooling of our bodies. Drink lots of water and avoid the sugar or diet drinks if possible. Water is best or alternatives like Gatorade. You cannot drink enough fluids even on short rides. If you have a touring or smaller Harley, carry plenty of fluids for you and maybe some extra for a friend in need. If you can have the water bottles attached to your handle bars or saddle bag bars, then they are more easily available to you as you ride. Always looks for simple signs of getting sick like headaches or blurring vision. Pull over as soon as it is safe and let a road captain assist you. Don t try to ride it out; it usually will not just go away. Keeping your body cooler can be done with specific cooling vests or neck cooling wraps. There are so many easy and reasonably inexpensive ways to help you stay cooler during our summer months. I have both the vest and the neck wrap and usually find the neck wrap is more than adequate for any in town rides and the vest is best for the longer rides to California, Arizona or Utah. Checking your helmets liner is also another thing that goes out from our summer heat and just years of use. Most helmets liners are only going to last 3-4 years even though some people think that can last for a life time. Well, they don t and just like tires and engine oil, they need to be checked often and changed regularly. I can usually tell my liner is going out when the fit is no longer as snug and the liner is cracking or breaking off. Pretty simple visual inspections will help in this area. Remember to change your visor as well during the summer months from a clear to a tinted one. Carrier a spare and occasionally even try cleaning it when it looks darker than it should. I usually carry the one I am not using just in case is cracks or I start off in the day time and end up riding into the night. Gloves are another important factor during the summer. A lot of mornings I start off with a light pair of covered fingered gloves and then change to the fingerless gloves later in the morning or during a lunch break. Just by making the correct clothing accessories to fit the time of year and weather conditions will make your ride so much more comfortable and enjoyable. Remember to check your tire pressure that Tom has been telling us about, check your oil and make sure you have a full tank of gas. Personally, my bike has never met a gas station that it does not like to be topped off at. If you have room, always carry enough gear to meet the changing conditions that you can encounter on any ride. Ride your ride, enjoy the scenery and be thankful to be a member of the one of the greatest HOG chapter s. Page 3

Here are More HOG Benefits for you HOG Member Benefit Tom Westdorp How can I get more value from my HOG membership? A question many of us ask ourselves. Sure, there are the birthday gift certificates from our dealerships, and the monthly ticket drawings they fund. There s the discount on AT&T wireless plans from the national, and the basic roadside assistance coverage (by the way if you haven t upgraded that to Deluxe give it some serious thought right now!) But if you can t get to the HD Museum or Miller Park how else can you get more value? Did you know that the national HOG will reimburse up to $50 for the successful completion of an accredited MSF rider training course? Not just the Rider s Edge classes, any accredited MSF rider training course. Now I know that each of you is an experienced rider, so the beginner course is probably not the right one for most of you, but let s think about the Skilled Rider course. A course taken on your own motorcycle, to sharpen your skills and help make you a safer rider. I hope everyone reading this article has his or her driver s license endorsed for motorcycle operation. Although those on HD trikes don t require it in Nevada, the rest of us certainly do. If there are any scofflaws reading this, please be aware the Skilled Rider course also can be used to earn your M endorsement. When I took the course half the students were taking it in a big hurry after getting a ticket. Wouldn t it be a good idea to get it handled on your schedule rather than the court s docket? Assuming we re all legal at this point, why take a Skilled Rider course? After all many of you have been riding motorcycles for years, even decades. What can you learn at this point? There s the whole old dog, new trick thing going on, too. Right? You put on lots of miles riding with the chapter, riding with other friends, riding alone just to enjoy the ride. Thousands, maybe tens of thousands of miles. You re not the owner of some garage bound dust magnet, you re riders. Skilled and experienced riders. Assume for a moment the course was required, just for the sake of argument. Would you be more worried that you re wasting money or that you won t pass? If you answered the former, ask yourself if you re really that good or maybe just a little cocky. If you re worried about passing, schedule the class now. You re smart enough to know you need it. We can all sharpen our skills, and having an instructor take you through a planned MSF curriculum addressing safe motorcycle riding will benefit any rider. Build your skills, correct bad habits and increase your confidence. Page 15

Here are More HOG Benefits for you cont. Continued, Also passing an MSF rider training course can earn you a discount on your motorcycle insurance. Check with your insurance company. HOG and probably your insurance company think the rider training courses are worthy of them putting up cash to subsidize them, by reimbursing you for passing them. Your part seems pretty easy! Take the course, what could be the problem? All the Road Captains passed the Skilled Rider course, and I sure would like to see the patch or pin signifying you passed the course on every vest in the chapter. How many times have you silently questioned the riding ability of someone else? How many times do you think someone else has silently questioned your riding ability? Are you really so good the class would be a waste of time and money, or will you be just a little worried about passing? How many of you are already wondering, how much do I get reimbursed if I don t pass? Take the course; you know it s the right thing to do! Page 16
