Girls in Aviation Day 2017 www.ncwai.org #NCGIAD2017 Photos by First in Flight Members

Our Mission First in Flight would like to show girls the opportunities available to them in the aviation industry. Girls in Aviation Day provides a day of fun and interactive activities where girls can spend time with influential aviation role models. What s the Challenge? Today there is a large gap of the percentage of women compared to men in aviation based careers. If you look at the approximately 700,000 General Aviation pilots in the United States, there is roughly 6% of the 700,000 pilots being women (42,000). As you increase in the difficulty of ratings in the aviation industry, there are even less! About 5,000 female airline pilots operate at the Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) level.

President Our Team Good day! My name is Chandra Steiner and I am the president of First in Flight. I have been a member of Women in Aviation since 2007 but long before have had my eyes to the skies. Currently, I fly a CRJ700s/900s for GoJet Airlines out of Raleigh, NC. I love inspiring young girls and women to chase their dreams, for anything is possible if you have the passion and desire to achieve your goals. In the future, I look forward to accomplishing my 9 year old dream of flying internationally around the world. Vice President Hi! My name is Marie Kogiso. As a former flight attendant for Delta Air Lines, I found love for traveling and flying. I decided to expand my career by attending ATP flight school where I obtained all my ratings. Shortly after, I taught students how to fly out of Phoenix, AZ. Today I fly CRJ 200s/700s/900s for PSA Airlines out of Charolette, NC. As the Vice President of First in Flight, I want to encourage your minds into obtaining their dreams they may not think is possible. Secretary Hello! My name is Rachel Martin. I joined First in Flight this year and knew I wanted to get involved with the members by becoming the 2017 Secretary. I am currently a First Officer at PSA Airlines flying CRJ700. I have been involved in aviation since my first discovery flight in 2002 from EAA. I look forward to help motivate girls and women to join the aviation community! Treasurer I'm Adrienne Stapleton. I attended flight school at Western Michigan University, where I received a Bachelors degree in Aviation Flight Sciences then went on to flight instructing. After gaining the required flight time I flew CRJ200s/700s for PSA and am now a First Officer for American Airlines flying an A320. I get to fulfill my dreams and hope to use my experience to inspire other young women to follow their dreams. Outreach Chair I m Courtney Robson, our Outreach Chair. I am currently a senior at North Carolina State University studying Economics. I love to get people interested in aviation and currently flight instruct for FlightGest out of Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Membership Chair My name is Val Barrett and I am a First Officer for United Airlines flying the B737. I helped start the First in Flight chapter in Central North Carolina with other like minded women one day in a coffee shop. We have been growing ever since. It is my goal to support and bring together women in the aviation industry as well as encourage your women to reach for the stars.

Come FLY with us on Saturday, September 23rd for Girls in Aviation day presented by First in Flight, a Women in Aviation International Chapter and Sugar Valley Airport! First in Flight is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting women in the aviation industry through providing support and scholarships to young women getting started in the aviation field. Women in Aviation International has chosen September 23rd, 2017 as the Girls in Aviation Day! First in Flight has organized a day where young girls between the ages of 8-17 can come out to participate in aviation related events. The day will begin with all the participants at 9:30am in the aircraft hanger at the Sugar Valley Airport. From there we will break up into groups of 7-10 girls to explore each activity station that range from a aircraft display, flying a flight simulator, and even discovering their first experience flying in an airplane*! The event will have hamburgers and hot dogs with french fries for $5 provided by a flying club, EAA. We will also have a raffle to win great prizes! Last year we had a certificate for a 1 hour flight lesson, a certificate for 1 hour flight training device lesson, and more. The event is free to attend to all participants but space is limited! With First in Flight being a non-profit organization, we will be collecting donations for First in Flight and for the Sugar Valley Airport for they are a non-profit airport who have donated their space free of charge to host our event. Any money raised at the event will be used for costs to support the current and future Girls in Aviation Day, possibly setting up scholarships for young women interested in aviation, and to keep Sugar Valley Airport a great non-profit airport! Thank you all for you interest! We look forward to seeing you on Saturday September 23rd!

NEWS RELEASE June 29, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Local Girls Introduced to Aviation in Free Program Women in Aviation hosts Girls in Aviation Day in 2017 The First in Flight Chapter of Women in Aviation, International (WAI) has announced that a free program is offered to local girls ages 8 to 17 years to introduce them to career possibilities that are available in the aviation industry. The day s activities will take place at the Sugar Valley Airport http://www.sugarvalleyairport.org/index.html in Mocksville, NC from 9:30am-4:00pm on Saturday, September 23, 2017. More than 150 girls with their chaperones are expected to attend. We want our local girls to see that there are great careers available to them as pilots, dispatchers, air traffic controllers and dozens of other jobs within the aviation community, says chapter President Chandra Steiner. We will introduce the girls to role models and educate them in a fun and supportive atmosphere. The First in Flight Chapter will join Women in Aviation, International chapters worldwide on September 23, 2017, for an outreach event to connect with the next generation of women in aviation. Chapters all over the world are putting on their own, unique programs, and U.S. states are proclaiming September 23rd, 2017 to be Girls in Aviation Day in their state. Attendees will also be able to earn the new Girls Scout Aviation Girl Fun Patch. You must sign up on the event website as there is limited space; a link can be found at www.ncwai.com. The program is free for participants and their chaperones, added Steiner. We just want to see girls interacting with positive role models and considering aviation as they make their college and career plans. ### Women in Aviation, International is a nonprofit 501(C)(3) organization dedicated to providing networking, mentoring and scholarship opportunities for women and men who are striving for challenging and fulfilling careers in the aviation and aerospace industries.
