TOURISM IN SAN GABRIEL MARKET OVERVIEW Tourism, particularly Chinese tourism, is on the rise, and San Gabriel has been directly benefiting from this economic infusion.san Gabriel is a preferred overnight destination because of its central location, the already-existing social infrastructure in place, including banks, signage, restaurants, and in some cases, local friends and family. Following changes to Chinese laws in 2008, leisure tourism to America, particularly the Californian urban areas of Los Angeles have increased at a breakneck speed. According to the US Department of Commerce, the total number of visitors from China increased 271 percent between 2007 and 2012. The greater Los Angeles area had 42.2 million total visitors in 2013, which was the third consecutive record breaking year according to the Los Angles Tourism and Convention Board. Upon completion, it is estimated that HYATT PLACE will see success similar to that of the nearby Hilton which boasts a nearly 90% occupancy rate. Hotel stays at the San Gabriel Hilton are booked largely by travel agencies and by local friends and family who recognize the benefits of hotels and local restaurants that cater to Chinese consumers. HYATT PLACE San Gabriel has the opportunity to continue to support the tourism-related businesses, and assist in their expansion as needed in order to continue to attract visitors. BY THE NUMBERS The average Chinese visitor spends $170 per day, including hotel, while the average trip expenditure in California is $2,930, according to the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board and the U.S. Office of Travel and Tourism Industries Based on a survey conducted by Visit California, about 36% of Chinese travelers are in California for business-related reasons. About 34% were on vacation, 19% to visit friends or relatives, and the remaining 11% of survey responders cited other reasons for the trip. Visit California recently conducted a credit card sales analysis of Chinese tourist expenditures. The largest expenditure was for jewelry, at 14% of all expenditures, followed by travel and entertainment at 8.2%, and clothing stores at 7.8%.
