January 2019 Mule Whispers From Carole January 23, 2019 Christmas 2018 has come an gone in a rush! We had a great Christmas Day with all five of the greatgrandkids here along with a bunch of adults. Mass chaos for awhile along with an indoor snowball fight instigated by our daughter, Barb. She had two boxes of foam snowballs to throw around. The Redwood Unit Christmas Party and dinner had a great turnout and everyone seemed to have a great time. The new venue of the Ferndale Veterans Building was a hit and everyone wanted to return there next year. So, it is booked for the second Saturday in December 2019. The Saturday, January 19, 2019 Members Only Pack Clinic at Polasek s Half Ass Flat Ranch was held despite the weather. A few hardy souls gathered and visited about a variety of issues. Darrel and Marty cooked their usual great hamburgers for lunch and there were great salads and hors d oeuvres to fill everyone up. The State Board meeting is right after our February meeting. Our directors will be Maris Hawkins and Cathy Mathena. Jacque Murphy will also attend as the state web master and part of the youth education program. Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Polasek s Half Ass Flat Ranch. The dinner crowd will be Pizza Co. about 5:30-6:00 p.m. or so. The Trail Challenge committee will be set up at the meeting. The hardy riders can get in some riding here and there. But bundle up as its dang cold out there. Might need to ride with the blanket still on your equine under the saddle. Carole Redwood Units donation to the Orick Rodeo grounds

Unfinished Business *The Unit Christmas party was a great success, as usual and everyone was happy with the Ferndale Veteran s Hall for this event. The Christmas Party for 2019 has been set for 2nd Saturday in December and will return to Ferndale s Veteran s Hall. It seemed to be a popular destination and since there is cooking equipment in the hall cooking is easier on the cooks. *Foul weather cancelled Unit participation in Ferndale s Lighted Tractor Parade. *Members Only Pack Clinic January 19 at Half Ass Flat Ranch will start at 10 a.m. with potluck around hamburgers about noon. Come check out Darrel s new cooler and practice on the iron mules. *State Board meeting is February 8-9. Maris will go as one director and Jacque will also attend because of her position as state education chair. If no other delegate is available from the Unit, Jacque will join Maris in voting. *A committee will be formed to take on the Trail Challenge, former Pack Clinic, in March, and the committee will decide whether to have a one-day or two-day event. *Officer training will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. January 26 in Red Bluff at the M&M Ranch House. *State Rendezvous will be March 29-31 at Norco. State sent Unit raffle tickets for a custom-made pack saddle outfit by Dan Horn, a $500 certificate from Bass Pro Shop or a Western horse print quilt. All tickets are $5.00 each. New Business *Directors and alternates for State Board meeting will be Maris Hawkins and Cathy Mathena if she is able. Jacque Murphy will be the alternate. *David Pritchard and Marlene Nylander volunteered to do the 2018 audit for treasurer s report. *Treasurer Maris recommends 2019 budget be the same as 2018 budget. *Carole had asked Maris to send $1,000 to Camp Fire animal rescue but a suggestion has been made to send another $500. Donation will be addressed at February meeting. *A $500 contribution for the 2019 Forest Service packing trainee will be addressed at February meeting. Announcements Lori White reported that Matt Giacomini got a donation from Miller Farms for a wheelbarrow, which Lori emblazoned with our name and the name of the donor. She also bought manure forks. The equipment has been donated, as per previous motion, to Orick Rodeo Grounds. Two tickets for Catered Ride have been donated to the Eureka FFA fund raising auction. Next membership meeting will be February 6 at Half Ass Flat Ranch. Next board meeting will be January 30, if needed.
