A WEEK IN THE ALPS A Journey Through Switzerland, Austria & Germany September 1 9, 2019

A Week In The Alps September 1 9, 2019 At the end of summer, let s visit the Alps together. This exciting adventure will see our small group journey through three countries. We ll ascend mountains and cruise on lakes, spend time in sleepy hamlets and major cities, all the while experiencing the history culture, cuisine and topography that make this stunning region in the heart of Europe so special. The Alps are one of the world s most iconic mountain ranges, spanning 750 miles over 8 countries. They are famous for shimmering lakes, soaring peaks and a deeply rooted local culture. An ancient farming region, the sustainable small-scale Alpine agriculture practices still produce some of the most delicious meats, cheeses and produce you can find... and let s not forget the legendary beer and chocolate! Our tour begins with two nights in lovely Lucerne, Switzerland, and then we travel through the mountains to Salzburg, Austria, by train, with a night in a picturesque Alpine village on the way. After two nights in Salzburg we move on to the Bavarian capital of Munich, Germay, for three more nights. As we make our way from Switzerland to Austria to Germany we ll dive into the fascinating history, scenery, culture and cuisine of the beloved Alpine region. IMAGINE YOURSELF On top of the world looking down from an Alpine viewing platform Raising a (large) glass in a German beer garden Exploring one of the world s most iconic castles: Neuschwanstein

Welcome to Switzerland! DAY 1: SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 1 Get to know your fellow travelers over fondue al fresco Explore the magical city of Lucerne, nestled in the heart of the Alps You ve arrived in the Alps! Your Onward Travel guide will meet you at ZRH International Airport this morning (or maybe you want to come early to explore Zurich!) along with a private vehicle and professional driver. We ll set out towards Lucerne, a one hour drive, stopping along the way to meet a local cheese seller with his mobile fondue truck ready to feed and entertain us. Soak in the majestic Alpine scenery and get to know fellow travelers over a brunch you ll never forget, it s a fondue party after all! Early afternoon we ll arrive in Lucerne and settle in at our accommodations for the next two nights, the friendly and newly renovated Hotel Central. This comfortable hotel is in the heart of Neustadt, or New City and a short walk to everywhere you ll want to go. A local guide will meet us at our hotel and take our group out for a local s orientation of this city, known for its incredible location in the middle of the mountains beside Lake Lucerne and a picturesque medieval Old Town. Before we tuck in to a festive welcome dinner tonight we ll set out for a short cruise on the lake so we can see the beautiful city ringed by mountains from the water. Meals Brunch, Dinner Interlaken Adventures DAY 2: MONDAY SEPTEMBER 2 Ascend Europe s steepest railway for unforgettable vistas Indulge in world famous Swiss chocolate even make your own! Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning, as you will each morning of the tour. Then we will take a day trip from Lucerne to the famous Alpine enclave of Interlaken. After time to explore town, do some shopping and have lunch on your own, we will meet at a fun local chocolate shop to dive into Swiss chocolate with our own guided chocolate tasting and chocolate making class. Then, it s time for some of the outdoor adventure that Interlaken is famous for. It s only a ten minute ride, but the ascent by rail up the Harder Kulm mountain is unbelievable and the views from the top, with its suspended viewing platform looking out over Interlaken, the lakes and other famous mountains like Jungfraujoch, is beyond spectacular. When we return to Lucerne at the end of the day you ll be free to spend this last night in Switzerland as you like. Meals Breakfast Traversing the Alps DAY 3: TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 3 Experience one of Europe s finest private art collections Relax on the train as Alpine splendor unfolds before you This morning we ll visit the Rosengart Collection, the wonderful private collection of Angela Rosengart, the daughter of a famous art dealer who later became one herself. She began to collect 19th and 20th century European art as a teenager and never looked back. Our private tour will give you the opportunity to enjoy works from artists such as Chagall, Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Cezanne and many others, while learning the context behind the works and how they came to be part of this collection. Then we ll board the train and head east into the heart of the Austrian Alps. Relax in your comfortable seat with a packed lunch and watch the Alpine wilderness unfold before you. After two and a half hours we arrive at the famous Tyrolian ski town, St Anton am Arlberg. Let s spend the night here, nestled amongst the mountains. At family owned Hotel Post you have access to the spa complete with an indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna and more, so you can really relax. Tonight we ll enjoy dinner together at a special local restaurant, as Austrian as it gets. LUCERNE Meals Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner

On to Salzburg DAY 4: WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 4 Wake up and spend the morning in an Alpine wonderland Arrive by train in beautiful Salzburg, the City of Mozart Get up early and head out for a good hike this morning, there are many trails to choose from, or just relax. We leave at midday with a packed lunch and our scenic Alpine train journey continues on three more hours to Salzburg. Salzburg, the home of Mozart, is famous for its storybook castle and genteel Baroque aura. This afternoon our fun local guide will meet us to show us around the city from gardens to royal residences and Mozart s birthplace, he ll bring this historic place to life for us. At the time of planning, full performance schedules for September 2019 have not yet been posted. Once we know what s on Onward will get tickets for our group to attend a classical music performance tonight or the next night. Before our evening at the symphony we ll head out for a bite to eat together. The other night in Salzburg will be a free night to explore this lovely riverside city on your own. ST. ANTON AM ARLBERG Meals Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner Border Region Exploration DAY 5: THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 5 Take in the views from the infamous Eagle s Nest compound Cruise across the deepest lake in the Alps This morning we ll be happy to see our local guide again. He will meet us after breakfast and we re on our way out of town for a day exploring the border region where Austria and Germany meet in the Alps. Our first stop is a place of modern infamy, the Eagle s Nest. The one-time Nazi hideaway is perched atop the mountain Obersalzberg with views for miles and a chilling legacy. Today it s the site of a restaurant, but our guide will fill us in on the historical significance of this place, its regular visitors and the decisions they made here. We ll descend the mountain to visit Berchtesgaden. This enchanting village, just north of the banks of the lake Königsee is a delight to explore and our group will have lunch together there and also visit the famous salt mine. We finish our day with a boat ride across the lake, the deepest in the Alps and breathtakingly gorgeous, to see the unique Church of St Bartholomeo perched on its banks. Fairytale Castles DAY 6: FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 6 Soak up royal vibes at enchanting Neuschwanstein Castle Check in to a fun, hip hotel in the heart of Munich After breakfast we will leave Salzburg in comfortable, private transportation once again. Our final destination today is Munich but we have some important stops along the way! Our guide will take us the scenic route to the iconic fairytale castle, Neuschwanstein. On the way we ll take in the sights of small Bavarian villages and even get a good view of the famous Zugspitze mountain. Then, at Neuschwanstein, we ll learn about Mad Lugwig and the whole fascinating history of a place so influential on how we all imagine a royal residence should look (thanks to Disney, too!). After Neuschwanstein we ll stop for a quick and casual lunch before continuing down the road to another castle - lovely Linderhof, with its beautiful gardens. We ll reach Munich as evening falls and check in to our hip hotel conveniently located near the train station. Then, surely tired from a long day, we will go to a restaurant just around the corner to relax over a simple but delicous dinner together. HORSES IN THE BEAUTIFUL Meals IRISH Breakfast, COUNTRYSIDE Lunch Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The Bavarian Countryside DAY 8: SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 8 Tour the memorial site of an infamous concentration camp Sip beer produced by Benedictine monks in an ancient abbey We leave Munich this morning to spend a day exploring the idyllic countryside surrounding the city. Of course, this region was the backdrop for some terrible historic events and this morning we honor that with a sobering visit to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, the first large-scale concentration camp built by the Nazis in 1933. Before its liberation by the Americans in 1945, over 200,000 people were imprisoned here at Dachau and more than 41,000 murdered. Our guide will explain to us just what happened here - and how - and in so doing we have the opportunity to help ensure that this dark part of history is never forgetten. A Perfect Day in Munich DAY 7: SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 7 Enjoy lunch and a liter of beer or two at a typical local beer hall Dive into the fascinating history of the Bavarian capital This morning we will meet the local guide who will accompany us as we explore Bavaria over the next two days. We ll spend the whole day in Munich, tracing the history of the Bavarian capital from its time as a wealthy medieval center of trade through the present, paying close attention to the significance of the city during the Second World War when it was the designated capital of Hitler s Third Reich. After we leave Dachau we ll take a deep breath of the Bavarian air and continue with our day. Our next stop will be a charming medieval town where you ll be on your own to explore and enjoy lunch. Then we move on the splendid Baroque monestary at Andechs. For over 1,000 years pilgrims have come to this hilltop place of prayer, but these days they also come for the beer produced by the Benedictine monks here. After visiting the ornate Rococo and Baroque chapel we ll taste these famous beers, some of Germany s best. Our day in the Bavarian countryside ends with a visit to nearby Ammersee to take in the lake views and take a little walk on the shore. This evening we have a very special treat planned at one of the most historic brewery halls in the nation - we ll be tapping our own wooden keg to enjoy at our table. Prepare to fill up your beer stein, tuck into a traditional German feast, and laugh over the memories of our week traversing the Alps together. Prost, indeed! Meals Breakfast, Dinner We break for lunch today at a biergarten, where you can raise a giant liter of beer to prost your traveling companions and enjoy some tasty local cuisine. After lunch we ll stretch our legs with a visit to the English Garden, as one of Europe s largest urban parks it is even bigger than Central Park and it s hard to imagine a lovelier place. Enjoy this evening in Munich as you like... Find some live music, go out for a nice dinner, or head to the beer hall. It s hard not to have a good time on a Saturday night in Munich and Onward and our local Munich guide will be happy to help you make a plan. Gute Reise! DAY 9: MONDAY SEPTEMBER 9 Our hotel is just across from Munich s main train station, or Hauptbahnhof, so you can easily hop on a quick train to the airport, or continue your journey in Central Europe (may we suggest Vienna or Prague?). Wherever this day takes you, we wish you a gute reise! Meals Breakfast, Lunch Meals Breakfast
