Hello Members! Presidents Message By Frank Smith July 2013 Last month s meeting was a two part meeting, set up by Dean Sumpter. Even though Dean couldn t attend because he had to work, we had a great time. We met at Black Bear Diner in Suisun City at 10:30 for breakfast and a short meeting. We had a good turnout with 25 attendees and 7 Studebakers. We also had a few new Studebakers that we haven t seen before, a 1960 Lark, 1955 Transtar pickup, and a Jaguar too. (see Jaguar pictures on page 3) Page 2 Welcome New Members Danny & Carol Hogge Galt, CA 1959 Pickup ref by: Frank Smith Peter & Cookie Braun Middletown, CA 1952 Landcruiser 1960 Lark VIII Regal 4 door ref by: SDC Turning Wheels We also had a short zone meet meeting. We talked about getting more raffle prizes for the meet. The raffle is where we make most of our money for the meet. All the prizes are donated so all the money we raise is all profit. Let s start collecting and get those prizes turned in. You can bring them to any meeting and give them to Johna or myself and we will store them. The manager at the Black Bear Diner, Phil Kang, had parking spaces blocked off in the parking lot for our Studebakers. They were very organized and had a patio area reserved for our group. They had a special menu for our club and the food was great. The manager took a group picture of us and our cars so he could put it up in the restaurant. We also have sponsor letters available for businesses to donate money for advertising in the program or trophy donations. This money raised really helps defer the printing costs that we incur. The second part of our excursion was a short drive to the Budweiser Plant in Fairfield for a tour of the brewery. We had a smaller group that caravanned over to the plant. We were ushered into the sampling room and the docent gave us a short history of Budweiser beer. The docent was very informative and we learned things about the brewing process that we never knew before. We also walked through the plant and saw the production line which filled 24 oz cans. I want to thank Dean Sumpter for setting up this great breakfast meeting and tour. We just got back from the 49 th International Studebaker Meet in Colorado Springs. We have lots of pictures, but more on that in next month s newsletter. Teaser Quiz for Colorado Springs International Meet (answer in Next month s issue of ) The Colorado Springs international SDC Meet celebrated a return after 40 years. The hosting chapter gave away plaques to those that were there for the original meet in 1973. One of our Karel Staple Chapter members received said plaque. Hint: he told us that his parents brought him to the meet in 1973. Also he received a deserving Best of Show award for his Studebaker that he brought to Colorado. Who is he? Happy Motoring Frank
Page 3 July 2013 Colorado Car Show Poster Spotted by Jeff and Darlene Darlene and I just returned from a short vacation to Southern Colorado on our Harley-Davidson. While stopping in Durango we found that they were advertising their upcoming annual Downtown Car Show. Well, their poster says it all! Not sure I d fully appreciate a VW Bug, but they got it right by showcasing the custom Studebaker Hawk (with flames on the hood). It was a great poster, but unfortunately the car show was the following weekend and we just couldn't stay another week. JEFF A New Studebaker in Dixon Maryanne McDonald told me there s a new Studebaker in Dixon but wasn t sure where it was. It took a little detective work but I did locate it. It s been in the family since owner, Pat, was a child. Her husband Chris showed me the car and pointed out the pillows she used to sit on as a child in the back seat. It s a 1949 Commander convertible and is all original. It needs a little TLC but is a driver. I gave him a newsletter and invited him to bring it to one of our meetings anytime. Coolest Brand X at Black Bear Have it your way better hold on! Hey, outta my car.. Not till I get a ride! Giggle..

He drove his 1959 Scotsman to Black Bear diner. Recently new member, Bob Blackburn, attended and his Studebaker truck is in pieces and being worked on. New members, Peter Braun, his wife Jennifer and son Lindsey, joined us for breakfast. Peter has been a lifetime member of SDC since 1969. They drove a 1960 Lark VIII. Craig & Frieda, guest of Brian and Linda, attended with their vintage Jaguar. Presidents report: Last call for sign ups to next months Travis AFB tour. The sign up sheet was passed around and we have about 35 members signed up. American River College sent us a picture and personal letter of thanks, from the student that received our scholarship donation. He was very thankful. We are taking names for the red polo shirts. Anyone who will be a volunteer for the upcoming zone meet, may sign up to order a shirt. These will be the same as last time, red polo shirt (with pocket) and our chapter logo. Sign up sheet was passed around. Treasurers report: The club checking account balance and expense paid outs were stated. Misc. Announcements: Betty & Perry Knopf had purchased children s clothes and gift cards with the money raised from the quilt raffle. They were donated to foster children and the person in charge was very happy and said, they never had a donation of this kind before. There were 121 garments purchased including sweat pants, sweat shirts and jeans. Jon Stalnaker announced that there will be a favorite Studebaker award at the Dixon Car Show, Saturday, Sept 21, 2013. He will send out an email application for anyone that is interested in attending. Brian & Linda presented an example of the wheelbarrow that they built for the table center pieces at the zone meet. Stickers will be ordered for the sides of the wheelbarrows and Brian is donating his labor. They presented items that can be made by Bill Hamilton. Such as a clock, blankets, license plates, photo art and wine or beer bottles, with your Studebaker on them with a background of your choice. We discussed having wine bottles printed up for the zone meet and Steve Rainville donated enough for 10 bottles for the raffle. Thanks Steve! We collected $80 for the 50/50 raffle and the winner was Frieda, a guest at our meeting!
July 2013 Page 5 Studebaker Recognized By: Jon Stalnaker The Napa Valley Marketplace Magazine, last year, recognized Studebaker with the honor of their Choice Award at the Napa Main Street Reunion car show. They give two best of show awards and this is one of them. My truck was the recipient and while it may be a cool truck, it is nowhere near best of show when compared to the many high dollar vehicles that permeated the event. I know that. What I believe they recognized was that Studebakers are cool. One of the perks of the award is that my truck is featured in the artwork for this years show. (see poster) Last year, out of almost 400 cars, Studebaker was represented by 5 cars. A 55 President, 2 GT Hawks, and 2 R series trucks. I would like to see greater Studebaker participation this year since they blessed our marque with this great honor. So if you are, or will be, anywhere near Napa on the week-end of August 17 th, please bring your Studebaker to this event. I would love to see a larger percentage of Studebakers and think it would be a fitting Thank You to the Downtown Napa Association for including Studebaker in this way. With your $35 registration fee (through August 9 th ) you will receive a goody bag that includes a wine glass and a commemorative coin that uses the artwork for this year s poster. You can also buy T-shirts for $20 and baseball hats for $18. Register on-line using PayPal at www.donapa.com. See you there. Tech Tip By: Bill Delli published in the North Georgia Chapter SDC Newsletter, Hillholder, July 2013 IN FOR A PENNY-IN FOR A POUND (The repair discussed below worked for me, but it has yet to stand the test of time. So, if anyone has any reason to believe that this is not a permanent or good fix, please let me know.) Charlotte and I are in the process of doing a full restoration of our 1951 Studebaker Champion. Restoration is expensive so we are trying to conserve our resources to complete the 51. We cannot, however, ignore the needs of our 1963 GT Hawk. That is why I tried to find an effective, but less expensive, way to repair the vacuum advance on the Hawk. The vacuum advance, which was on a Prestolite distributor, was original to the car. When the Hawk stopped running well, that was one of the first things I checked. To buy a NOS part from a national parts dealer would cost $115.00. A refurbished one would cost $94.00 (plus a $75 core charge if I did not provide the old part). I decided to look around and see if I could do better. After checking with all of the other auto parts stores in Calhoun GA and finding no solution, I took my vacuum advance to NAPA and asked them if they had a vacuum advance that fit the Hawk. They did not have a part listed, but they had several vacuum advance parts in stock. The clerk checked to see if any of the in-stock parts were similar to the Studebaker part. He found one (NAPA Part Number VC3033) that mounted on the distributor the same way as the old part, but the actuator arm was different from the one on the Studebaker vacuum advance. But, the NAPA part cost only $10! After checking out the new part and learning the price, I decided to try cutting off a portion of the arm on the new part and welding the arm from the old part in place of it. Other than ruining the old part, all I had to lose was $10, a risk I could accept. I installed the modified new vacuum advance on my GT Hawk. It fits well and, so far, has worked for 400 miles of driving the Hawk since finishing the repair.

Check It Out I received this message from new member Peter Braun. He found this information online concerning Studebaker wagons and the Budweiser Clydesdales. The picture I used is from my own files and depicts one of the Budweiser wagons that was in the Dixon May Fair parade a few years ago. This one is not a Studebaker wagon but the wagonmaster told me that some of them are. He said the one they usually use is but it was back east undergoing a restoration at the time. Here is a link to answer the Budweiser / Studebaker hitch question. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/budweiser_clydesdales#cite_note-12 Further down the page there is confirmation that the wagons (pl) are indeed Studebaker. My son and I go to the State Fair every year. We usually visit with the team, so if we can get some photos of the wagon, I will send you one. It was a pleasure meeting you and the other fun folks in the Karel Staple Chapter this afternoon. We look forward to seeing you in July. Jennifer, Peter, and Lindsay
