The senatorial family of the Domitii Enobardi chose the island as a favoured place of residence, building the most prestigious seaside villa of the Tuscan Archipelago in the Cala Maestra inlet in the 2nd century AD. Once the property of Charlemagne, and subsequently donated to the Church, the island changed hands any number of times over the centuries and, finally, went to the reunited Kingdom of Italy. The Island of Giannutri has been declared a marine park, meaning that the authorities keep it under especially close protection and control: in the zone-1 areas, within 1 km of the coast, fishing and boating, including entry in the zone, stopping, anchoring and diving, are prohibited. In the zone-2 areas, fishing is regulated by the Park Authority. The main prohibitions are against fishing and scuba fishing. Residents are allowed to fish with poles and hooks, while non-residents must obtain authorisation from the maritime authorities.
