Our exploration of the awe-inspiring Kimberley region begins early this morning. We visit the unusual Boab Prison Tree, believed to be more than,500 years old. We then continue our journey along the Gibb River Road, a remote Outback highway that accesses some of the Kimberley s most spectacular destinations. At Windjana Gorge, marvel at sheer cliffs that tower above white sands and see the ancient marine fossils embedded in the gorge walls. You may catch a glimpse of crocodiles lazing on the banks of the Lennard River. Continue to remarkable Tunnel Creek and, with torch in hand, wade through the underground waters to view the oasis. Two Night Stay: EXCLUSIVE! Bell Gorge, with private ensuites, Gibb River Road. LD Day. Bell Gorge, Hiking and Swimming. The reward for hiking into Bell Gorge is a swim below the waterfall where rugged cliffs surround a series of tiered waterholes. Alternatively go bird-watching and keep an eye out for the wedge tail eagle. There are a number of hikes available for those who feel more energetic. Day 3. Galvans Gorge, Barnett River Gorge, Drysdale River Station. Our journey today takes us through the heart of Kimberley cattle country to discover some of the region s most secluded gorges and swimming holes. At Galvans Gorge, a short walk leads to a picturesque waterhole. Inspect the rock art on the gorge walls and take a leisurely swim. Beautiful Barnett River Gorge provides an idyllic setting to enjoy lunch under shady gum trees, while keeping an eye out for the unique birdlife that inhabits the area. Turning off the Gibb River Road, travel north along the Kalumburu Road, heading towards the isolated Mitchell Plateau. Stay: Drysdale River Station, Kalumburu Road. Day 4. Mitchell Plateau, King Edward River, Gwion (Bradshaw) Art. Ascending the Mitchell Plateau, explore Wandjina and Gwion (Bradshaw) art galleries and swim in the clear waters at King Edward River. For the next two nights, stay at our exclusive permanent wilderness accommodation beside pandanus palm-fringed Camp Creek, where the inviting water is ideal for a refreshing dip. For wildlife watchers, the region s birdlife includes brolgas, herons, kites and sea eagles. Two Night Stay: EXCLUSIVE! Stay in tented cabins with private ensuite bathrooms at Mitchell Falls. Day 5. Mitchell Falls, Aboriginal Art, Helicopter Flight over the Falls. A full day on the plateau allows us to truly explore the beauty of Mitchell Falls, with its magnificent waterfalls, rugged rocky outcrops and Aboriginal art. When available, local Aboriginal guides will join us for the adventure. Begin with a guided hike to Little Mertens Falls to view rarely seen Aboriginal art. Our professional Driver/Guide then shows us Big Mertens Falls before arriving at Mitchell Falls. Here, we can cool off with a swim in the pools above the falls and learn of local flora and fauna. We have included a helicopter flight over Mitchell Falls back to the vehicle (or, if you prefer, hike back with your guide). Longer helicopter flights over the coastline are available at an additional expense. Day 6. Mitchell Plateau, King Edward River, Aboriginal Art. Travelling through Livistona palm forests, view galleries of ancient Aboriginal art before saying goodbye to the awe-inspiring scenery of the Mitchell Plateau. We break our journey south with a lunch stop at a majestic location beside the cool waters of the King Edward River, where we can enjoy a swim, before continuing to our accommodation. Gibb River Road, El Questro Wilderness Park. Our journey takes us back onto the rugged Gibb River Road, where we ford the Durack River, named after the region s most famous pioneering family. This afternoon we arrive at one of the Kimberley s most well known cattle stations, El Questro Wilderness Park a one million-acre working cattle station in the Kimberley wilderness. Perhaps experience a challenging hike into Emma Gorge and reward yourself with a refreshing dip in the inviting waterhole under a droplet waterfall which greets you on arrival. This evening, relax over a home-style dinner at Emma Gorge Resort. Stay: Tented cabins with spacious ensuites at Emma Gorge Resort, El Questro. Day 8. El Questro, Wyndham, Parry s Lagoon. In the shadow of Livistona Palms, Zebedee Springs provides the perfect setting for a relaxing soak in the natural thermal pools. Feeling refreshed, re-board our custom-built 4WD vehicle and farewell the Gibb River Road as our journey continues to Wyndham, taking in spectacular views of the Cambridge Gulf. After experiencing lunch at an iconic Outback pub we visit Parry s Lagoon, a bird watchers paradise en-route to Kununurra. 8 Day (GKC08) passengers depart the tour. Two Night Stay: Kununurra Country Club Resort, Kununurra. Day 9. Ord River and Lake Kununurra Cruise. Kununurra is the gateway to the untamed and adventurous Kimberley region. Spend time discovering the town this morning. The construction of Lake Argyle, the largest man-made lake in the Southern Hemisphere, has transformed the dry and barren landscapes of Kununurra into a prosperous agricultural industry. Later, we join a spectacular wildlife cruise on the mighty Ord River and witness a dramatic sunset as we cruise Lake Kununurra, rated one of the best cruises in Australia. B Day 0. Echidna Chasm, Purnululu National Park. We venture deep into one of the most recognisable icons of the Kimberley today, Purnululu National Park, a wilderness region that was awarded World Heritage status in 003. A hike into Echidna Chasm unveils a spectacular cleft in the rock massif. The famous domes of the Bungle Bungle Range were largely unknown to Europeans until the mid-980s. Galleries of ancient Aboriginal rock art indicate Purnululu has been home to local Indigenous people for thousands of years. During our time here, we ll uncover the ancient history of the region. Two Night Stay: EXCLUSIVE! Stay in tented ensuite cabins at Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, Purnululu National Park. Day. Cathedral Gorge, Beehive Domes. The Purnululu National Park is just waiting to be discovered today. Hike along rugged Piccaninny Creek and explore the impressive Cathedral Gorge, where you can test the natural acoustics of this massive limestone cavern. Walk among the famous striped beehive domes as your guide brings the natural history of the range to life. Learn about bushtucker, bush medicine and the area s significance to local Aboriginals. There s also time for an optional helicopter flight (own expense). Enjoy drinks as you watch the sun set over the Bungle Bungle Range this evening, before retiring to your comfortable bed at the awardwinning Bungle Bungle. Day. Halls Creek, Fitzroy Crossing. Day (GKC) passengers depart the tour on a scenic flight to Kununurra. Farewell the Bungle Bungle, as the famous domes disappear in our rear-vision mirror. After two weeks of travelling on Outback roads you ll relish the smooth ride of the Great Northern Highway as we travel to Halls Creek. See the unusual China Wall, a natural quartz formation, before heading to Fitzroy Crossing. Stay: Fitzroy River Lodge, Fitzroy Crossing. Day 3. Geikie Gorge Cruise, Broome. Welcome to Geikie Gorge, where annual flooding has created a bleached effect on the limestone walls. Board a unique cruise along this stunning gorge, where a local guide will teach us more about the significance of the local flora and fauna. Later, we return to Broome. The tropical city of Darwin disappears quickly in our rear-vision mirror as we travel across the Marrakai Plains to World Heritagelisted Kakadu National Park. We are welcomed into Kakadu by the sight of Ubirr rock where we explore galleries of ancient Aboriginal art. Later, we enjoy a cruise along the East Alligator River on the Guluyambi Cruise. A local Aboriginal guide will bring the culture, history and wildlife of the region to life. Cameras are a must as there are plenty of opportunities to capture crocodiles in their natural habitat.
