Volume 18 Month 10 ober 2012 BOC 3 Membership Meeting Join us 3 6:30pm social hour, 7:00 pm announcements and 7:30 program at the Butler YMCA when Brett McGinnis will be presenting his mini documentary on The Old Stone House. The Old Stone House is located near Slippery Rock, PA. This documentary started as Brett's senior project at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh where he studied film and video production. Upon graduating, he was able to extend and complete the documentary. He stated, "Many people know of the Old Stone House, but do not know about the Old Stone House." It is important to point out Butler County's rich history in order to preserve it. Brett will also be talking about his experience in filmaking and telling a ghost story or two while recounting his time on the SyFy channel television show, Ghost Hunters Academy. Brett McGinnis graduated from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 2011. He was cast as the co-star on a reality television show on the SyFy channel.presently, Brett is working on directing, shooting and editing regional commercials. BOC Nov 10 Dinner Speaker Our annual dinner features guest speaker Ray Rossi. Born in Sharpsville, Pa. Ray began his professional career as an educator in 1968. He enjoyed teaching world geography and world cultures at the middle school level for 32 years while always possessing a strong desire for hiking, travel, and photography. It was in the summer of 1996 that he began his inaugural adventure to the highlands of Scotland where he hiked Ben Nevis and several of the Scottish Munros. After an adventurous trip to Newfoundland Ray set his sights on accomplishing his lifelong goal of backpacking the Inca trail through the Andes to Machu Picchu. His travels took him to Alaska, Switzerland, South Island of New Zealand, and several National Parks in the U.S. Each venue brought new and exciting subjects to be photographed. It wasn t until ober of 2011 did Ray have the extreme privilege of climbing to the base camp of Mt. Everest, his personal greatest achievement.

BOC Annual Dinner Nov 10 The BOC annual Dinner will be held Saturday November 10 at the East Butler Firemans Hall at 808 Grant Ave, East Butler, Pa. A Silent Auction will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. The dinner begins at 7:00pm and features stuffed chicken breast or stuffed pork chop, scalloped potatoes, green bean casserole, rigatoni and a tossed salad. There will be door prizes, displays and more! Our guest speaker Ray Rossi will present a program on his climb to the base camp of Mt Everest. Dinner ticket price is $15 per person. Dinner tickets will be on sale at the 3 meeting. If you cannot attend this meeting, mail a check along with the names of those attending to Butler Outdoor Club, PO Box 321, Harrisville, Pa 16038. Our meeting includes outing announcements, a featured speaker and slide show or outdoor educational program and is open to the public. Bring your bicycle aboard the train @ Petroleum Center @ 11:50 AM for the one hour scenic trip through Oil City State Park. When we arrive at the Drake Well Museum, unload your bike, check out the sights, get a snack and get on the trail for the ten mile downhill bike ride back to your car. Tickets may be purchased on the train $18 adults, $11 children under 12 years, both includes $1. bike fare. Bicycles may be rented there for $10/day GPS directions: 1080 Petroleum Center Road Oil City, PA 16301 I ve coordinated this trip with the nearby Big Franklin Apple Fest so you can stop for fun and food on your way home. Joanne Winwood 412-241-1004 Spend a day doing a "Hawk Watch" in Somerset County with the Butler Outdoor Club. We will sit on Shaffer Mountain and count hawks and anything else that floats by. This is the time for the Osprey, Northern Harrier, Sharp-shinned hawks, Red tail hawks, Coopers hawk, American Kestrel, Peregrine Falcon and maybe a Golden Eagle. The location is the Allegheny Front Watch, operated by the Allegheny Plateau Audubon Society. Bring a lunch and something to drink warn preferably. And bring a jacket it gets cold up on the mountain at this time of the year. We can stay till closing - around 5:00 and have dinner at an area restaurant. Date: 10/06/2012 - weather permitting (hawks won't be flying there in the rain). Time: We can carpool and head up together - leave at 9 am from the store in Portersville. BOC night hike: 7:30pm Friday ober 19 4 to 4½ Mile evening loop hike (no shuttle) of abandoned township roads at the Frank Preston Conservation Area in Moraine State Park. Saturday, September 29, 2012 10:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2012 11:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. History is in motion at the 20th Annual Heritage Festival at McConnells Mill State Park. The festival celebrates the operational time period of the historical gristmill from 1852 to 1928, and costumed vendors will display crafts inspired by this time. Bluegrass music and free tours of the mill will be offered. The historic gristmill houses the fascinating machinery that ground the grain for the community surrounding Slippery Rock Gorge. A civil war encampment brings history to life, and artisans & craftsmen will demonstrate their skills throughout the festival. Entertainment and Music: Childrens Activities (All FREE!): Art in the Park Face Painting Strolling visit from Abe Lincoln and Robert E. Lee Old Time Games Much, much more! The Portersville-Prospect Rotary Club, aided by several local businesses and nonprofit organizations, sponsors the Festival. Admission and parking are free. With a base camp at the Comfort Inn of Clearfield, volunteer hike leaders from the Quehanna Area Trails Club will guide both new and experienced hikers through the best trails in the area. Clearfield County is close to the center of PA, and is brimming with beautiful scenery, bustling and historic towns, and lots of things to do! A wide variety of guided hikes will be offered on and around the scenic Quehanna Trail during the three-day weekend. In your free time, you and your family can check out Clearfield's Fall Festival, the Clearfield County Conservation District's "Dam Darkness" nighttime hike, the new Clearfield County "Geotrail" (for geocachers), nearby Lincoln Caverns, Grice Museum for the car enthusiasts, take a tour at Starr Hill Winery, or spend some time fishing or

20 boating at Curwensville Lake! KTA members and their friends will be able to enjoy hiking, activities, meals, meetings, and camaraderie in Clearfield, Clearfield County, PA. The Quehanna Area Trails Club and the Ridge and Valley Outings Club have teamed up with KTA to offer a wide range of interesting and engaging activities for our Fall Hiking Weekend participants! In addition to challenging, longer hikes, short, easy, and kidfriendly options will also be offered each day. Saturday afternoon, KTA members will have the option of attending KTA's Council Meeting from 4-6 PM, while KTA's Member Club Representatives, Representatives-at-Large, Committee Chairs and all other Council members discuss important issues regarding Keystone Trails Association, KTA's member organizations, and hikers/hiking trails throughout Pennsylvania. Saturday evening, a hearty and delicious buffet will be catered by Apple Banquets and Catering, at the Knight's of Columbus (520 Arnold Avenue, Clearfield, PA 16830). After our meal, KTA will have its annual General Membership Meeting. Bob Merrill, the newlyretired District Forester of the Moshannon Forest will give a Keynote Address, and KTA will present the 2012 Hiking Awards. For details see www.kta-hike.org. McConnells Mill State Park Program: Fall Dog Hike Saturday, ober 20 10:00-11:30 a.m. Hell s Hollow Spend a crisp fall morning with your canine companion at McConnells Mill State Park. Join the park naturalist at Hell s Hollow for a moderate twomile hike. This is a great way to socialize your pet as we will also review some tips for helping your pet if they encounter some animal troubles while out for a hike. Only friendly and vaccinated dogs please! Pets must be on a leash at all times. Bring plenty of water (for you and your dog), a leash, and a dog waste bag. Please allow 15 minutes to get to Hell's Hollow from the covered bridge.
