President s Message JUNE-JULY 2006 CVSC SKIZETTE PAGE 3 W hat are YOU doing this summer now that you are not skiing? Well CVSC has plans for you. Are you up to it? To begin with make sure you come to the June General meeting on the 21st. We need to get you signed up for all the summer activities. Bring your social calendar and your check book. To start off in July we will have our general meeting at Castro Valley Community Center in the upper picnic area. This is a Bar-B-Que event. There is no cost, however, you do need to bring what you want to BBQ and a side dish or dessert to share. Look for the flyer in this issue to determine which item to bring according to your last name. Some should bring a side dish, some should bring dessert. The Club will provide the BBQ grill and charcoal, along with water, paper plates, plastic forks and knives, and napkins. This event starts at 6:00 and is a great time to socialize. Some members even bring a bottle of wine to enjoy, Oh-My. On July 29 th is Dan and Pat Green s famous Mexican Fiesta. This event costs $19 and includes Margarita s poured by the Margarita girls, hors d ouvres, and a fabulous dinner. The event is poolside so you know what that means. Friday night, August 4 th is the Mystery Dinner Theater at the Pleasanton Hotel. Cost is $60 and includes dinner, tax and tip but not drinks. Booth Meyers is coordinating this for us and is collecting checks made payable to CVSC. This is dinner and a show where each table tries to come up with who did it. We have 25 people signed up already and if we get 50 we ll have the whole place to ourselves. The next day, Aug. 5 th is the annual Day on the Delta. Right now we have only two boats participating which means we re limited to 14 people but so far we only have 10 signed up. First to sign up, go. The cost is $20 with $5 going to the luckiest person. The rest of the money goes to gas, what else. We will be stopping at a few places, and those that are adventurous can go tubing. Also, plan on buying lunch at one of the stops and bring something to drink and snacks if you like. The 16 th of Aug. we will have our general meeting again at Castro Valley Community Center for another BBQ. Again look for the flyer as those that were assigned a side dish in July should bring dessert, and those that brought dessert should bring a side dish. Next on our summer schedule is the Napa Wine Tour coordinated by Sandy Beecher. This event is Sept. 16 th. This is fantastic opportunity to visit some great wineries. I don t know the cost yet but if your at all interested you should get on the list. This event is usually limited to 20 people and again first to sign up go. The cost should be around $45-$50 and includes dinner at Sandy s in Napa after the winery tour. Last on our summer schedule is the A s baseball game and fireworks show Friday, September 22 nd. The cost is $30 and we will have a tailgate party/bbq pre-game. The BBQ will be in the North parking lot under the light pole with three black stripes. Bring what you want to cook and drink. Paper products will be supplied. This is a fund raiser for Disabled Sports and a portion of the cost will be going to DSUSA. I need your money for this event by the July meeting so we can purchase the tickets in advance. Last year CVSC had 49 people at the BAC event. If we want to sit together we need to get our money in early. I hope you all have a great summer. Don t forget the June meeting to sign up and pay for the activity of your choice. PAGE 10 CVSC SKIZETTE The Ports of Call..The Serenade of the Seas JUNE-JULY 2006 Cabo San Lucas, Mexico Once referred to as the "millionaire's sandbox," Cabo San Lucas is Mexico's jewel resort at the very tip of the Baja Peninsula. Its remote location and unspoiled beauty make this a seaside paradise. Acapulco, Mexico Acapulco was first settled in 1550 and for many years was a major Mexican shipping port. Attracted to its perfect sunsets, clear waters and many white-sand beaches, visitors began flocking to Acapulco in the 1920s. Visitors still thrill to the sight of Acapulco's intrepid La Quebrada cliff divers, who routinely risk their lives by leaping from the 130-foot-high rock formations into the surf below. Its legendary nightlife makes it a required port of call for the complete Mexican cruise adventure. Huatulco, Mexico Once a haven for pirates and weary sailors traveling from the Far East, today Huatulco (pronounced wah-tool-co) is a relatively undiscovered port of call. Located on the Pacific Coast in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, it's one of the first destinations in the western hemisphere to focus on eco-tourism and the protection of natural resources. And with 22 miles of jagged coastline, pristine beaches and spectacular crystal-clear waters it's easy to see why.. Puntarenas, Costa Rica Tiny Puntarenas, on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, is situated between the volcanic beaches of the Golfo de Nicoya and some of the country's highest mountain peaks. Within a half-hour's drive from the port, tropical jungles give up their secrets to the casual observer. Trees flash with color as macaws, toucans and parakeets take flight, and howler monkeys scream in the distance. In the capital city of San Jose, you'll find museums, theaters and shops. Oranjestad, Aruba Located on the picturesque southern coast, Oranjestad is the historic Dutch capital of Aruba, where the traditional, tall, multicolored houses combine carved wooden doors and typical Dutch tiles with open-air patios. The charm of the city complements the beauty of this popular Caribbean island where the Dutch and indigenous cultures have merged to give Aruba its unique atmosphere. Today's visitors can enjoy this culture along with beautiful beaches, excellent snorkeling and exciting nightlife.
