PAGE 4 GLEN CAMPBELL Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb in Session (Universal) - Glen Campbell is a musical legend; he has released over 50 studio albums alone and has enjoyed success at the top of the pop, adult contemporary and country charts, especially from the years of 1967 to 1980. In his early career days he was a much sought after session guitarist who played on hits by Jan and Dean, T h e Monkees, Nat King Cole, Bobby Darin, Elvis Presley and F r a n k Sinatra, to name a few. Many of Glen s most memorable hits were written by a man named Jimmy Webb. Jimmy is also a legend in the music business, having written songs for the likes of R.E.M., Elvis Presley, America, Art Garfunkel, Donna Summer, Carly Simon, The Supremes and more. Over the years, the combination of Jimmy s word craft and Glen s voice gave us some incredible musical moments to enjoy. This new CD release owes its very existence to Canada. In 1983 both Glen and Jimmy took part in a studio recording session in Hamilton, Ontario as part of the In Session television show on CHCH TV. By Paul Power This is the audio portion, with 9 songs presented in a stripped-down version, featuring Jimmy on piano and Glen on guitar and vocals. Whenever I hear the song Wichita Lineman it brings back the memory of driving back from Halifax many years ago, it was about 2 in the morning and the radio station played that song-for some reason it seemed like such a fitting moment, and has resonated with me ever since. The version here is immaculate. That same quality is present on Galveston, If These Walls Could Speak and Still Within The Sound Of My Voice. All the songs here are great but Glen s voice absolutely shines on Where s The Playground Susie, MacArthur Park and The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress. They are very special musical moments. Glen Campbell is 76, and is dealing with Alzheimer s disease as he finishes up his farewell tour. The timing of this release is obvious, and for those of us who have witnessed just how that disease eventually robs the person of who they were, getting another chance to hear this man at his peak is something that should not be missed. In Session is a fitting testimonial to both Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb. Big Bras d Or News SENIORS LUNCHEON - Big Bras d Or Fire Hall October 13th 12:00-2:00. He invited 250 guests and only 200 attended. If you were to stop and think when you sign your invitation that you will attend. Most suppers run from $12-30, (his was $21.50) per plate. If you fail to show up, they still have to pay for those dinners. This young people could have used that money elsewhere (in this case $1,050). Even the caterer feels bad but they have to charge for how many you state are coming. Just stop and think if you say yes, please attend. Assists Community Organizations Some time ago I wrote a community profile on New Deal Community Centre Ltd. This non-profit organization is now doing yet two other projects in the community which can only be considered a true example of what working for the community is all about. Last month this organization began the sponsorship of a Job Creation Partnership that assists non-profit organizations. The program has seven participants taking part in the program. They are providing required maintenance to non-profit organizations in the area which may not be otherwise possible and in some cases assists them with ensuring that their doors remain open. The non-profit organizations that they are assisting provide all of the required materials and the Job Creation Partnership Program provides the labour. Non-profit organizations have provided their lists of required maintenance and a schedule has been drawn ensuring that the time required for each location has been provided. President and CEO, Joe Tobin, of New Deal Community Centre Ltd. is overseeing the program and has been contacted by several of the organizations where work has been completed indicating how pleased they are with the work that has been completed. The Job Creation Partnership is funded through Labour and Advanced Education Employment Nova Scotia and provides participants with employable skills that can be used in future employment opportunities. The program is scheduled to run until the end of March. New Deal Community Centre Ltd. is also sponsoring a Mixed Re-Entry Program which is funded through the Skills Work Program which provides employability training to twelve participants which will be followed by an employer based work placement. The participants began their four weeks of training in September and will begin their work placements on October 22 nd. At this time the organization is seeking placements for the participants and is contacting businesses in the area. This is a wonderful opportunity for the participants as well as the employers. Should any businesses be interested in participating please contact New Deal at 736-3796. President and CEO, Joe Tobin stated that New Deal Community Centre Ltd. is focused on working with and for the community. They are always seeking new possibilities and programs which will enable them to fulfill this commitment. A sincere thank you to New Deal Community Centre for helping to make our community a better place for all of us. Some Amusing Thanksgiving Stories The sentence in the Thanksgiving edition of my church bulletin intended to say "Thank you, Lord, for the many miracles we are too blind to see." But in what might have been a classic Freudian slip, the sentence read "Thank you, Lord, for the many miracles we are too blond to see." Thanks for the Pie - Some neighbors of my grandparents' gave them a pumpkin pie as a holiday gift. As lovely as the gesture was, it was clear from the first bite that the pie tasted bad. It was so inedible that my grandmother had to throw it away. Ever gracious and tactful, she still felt obliged to send the neighbors a note. It read "Thank you very much for the pumpkin pie. Something like that doesn't last very long in our house." Happy Thanksgiving To All Our Readers
