FINAL REPORT Japan-Asia Youth Echange Program in Science by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) From 5 March to 11 March, 2017 Learn Evironment Conservation from Nature and Disaster in Kagoshima By: Kareri Ivo Ayrin Andalas University

My name is Kareri Ivo Ayrin, I come from Andalas University, Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. My major is Entomology. I will telling about my journey before I go to Kagoshima Japan. I have been heard about the announcement that I got this program in December 2016, but I m not telling anyone, because I don t even believe that I will go to Japan. When I made my passport in immigration office, I met my senior there, she ask me where will I go?, I just answered that I m not going anywhere. Two months later (February 2017) the invitation letter was coming, but I still not telling anyone because I m afraid if suddenly this program will be failed my friend will laughing at me. And day by day I still counting while finished my research, I really stress in that time, I have to prepare for this program and my research in same time, and one day the level of my stress increase when Japanese Consulate called me and tell that there s a mistake with my visa s document I whispered oh my God, what I have to do and lucky they forgive me and just ask me to be careful for next time. Finally the day was coming (4 March 2017) I really excited and nervous, it s my first time to go away from my hometown, but I talk to my self Calm down, it s gonna be fun and will be the greatest experience for me. And now, I have finished my exchange program and I will tell about my activities during my stay in Kagoshima. Day 1 (Sunday, 5 March 2017) We arrived in Haneda International Airport at 07.00 am, then we continued our next flight to Kagoshima City at 09.00 am. At 11.00 am we arrived with excited face in Kagoshima city, there are our first time to meet Eizi Suzuki Sensei and Aprilia Korisano an Indonesian student too who finished her Master degree in Kagoshima University. After have same conversation in Airport, we go to International Recidence Hall (Kaikan) by using taxi accompanied by Aprilia Korisano while Suzuki Sensei waiting for Malaisyan student was coming.

In International Student Hall we got a room each other, it was really wonderful because in my mind, we will get one room for us, but apparently we had one room for one person. After take care of our bag in our room, we went to a caffe near the Kaikan with kak April and Kak Yora. There s so cold, because it is my first time to felt 6 0 temperature, but I still excited enjoyed my first spring. In the Afternoon, we had a Welcome Party in Kaikan, we met many Indonesian student there, I really happy to meet them, I wish I could stay there for a long time, the party was really fun, we laughing, telling an experience and many wonderful things that we do. Day 2 (Monday, 6 March 2017) The second day in Kagoshima city, I woke up early, I was very excited to got my first class as an international student there, at 07.00 am I went to Kainkan 1 to found WiFi, I don t have internet access on my phone because I don t buy sim card. I look around the kaikan and take much of picture that I want to send to my family in Indonesia. My cousin really jealous at me, he said that I really lucky can visit Japan. We walking to Korimoto campus accompanied by kak April, she told me many things about Kagoshima University, I really amazed with her, I wanna be like her too someday. We had a first class at 8.50 am, our first lecture is about Life in Japan, this lecture was presented by Keiko Unedaya Sensei. She told about history of Kagoshima University, Culture in Japan, simple Japanese Phrases with Body Language and many things that I never known before. After that, actually we had our second lecture about Vegetation in Kagoshima by Eizi Suzuki Sensei, but we have to go to Administrative office to get a travel fee. Then we look around the Campus with Suzuki Sensei. We go to the museum, and go to University Cafetaria to have a lunch, on the way to the cafe we look Ume a flower that look same like sakura we really happy, and take many pictures of them. At 12.50 pm, we go back to class and continued our lecture about Environmental Issue of Mercury, this topic was presented by Takashi Tomiyasu Sensei. He told us many things about Mercury, we have watched the video of Minamata disease, Pollution and Remediation, and he told that no problem with Minamata Bay now. I really interested with this topic, because my major is Entomology, so I got the information that I never read before. And the 4 th lecture was about Management of Conservation Areas, this topic was presented by Hoshino Sensei, and the end of our lecture in 1 st day was closing by Eizi Suzuki sensei with continued the 2 nd lecture about Vegetation in Kagoshima, Suzuki Sensei show us very informative presentation about the place that we will visit next day.

In the evening we spent our time in kaikan, we enjoyed every hours in our own bedroom and ready for the next day. A B C D E F

Day 3 (Tuesday, 7 March 2017) Tuesday, 7 March 2017 is my 3 rd day in Kagoshima, same with 2 days before the temperature was very cold about 6-8 0 celcius, but it s not make me lost my spirit, I still excited with new things in Japan. The day is our first time to walking to campus without accompanied by kak April, we lost before go to campus, we don t know the right way, and finally we used google map to find the way, and we arrived in campus 20 minutes later without late. At 8.50 am we get our last lecture about Nature and Disaster in Sakurajima by Masuyuki Maki Sensei. He told us about Sakurajima Volcano, Agriculture in Sakurajima, Historical eruptions in Sakurajima, Volcanic eruptions and many interested things about Sakurajima. We finished our last class at 10.30 am. After that we go to Sakurajima with University bus and use Ferry, arrived in Sakurajima we look around, we visit Visitor center, Yunohira sight view point of Sakurajima, Kurokami (buried Torii) and Sakurajima Sabo center. The day was so much fun, we spent our day there, and we got an informative experience about Sakurajima. At 16.00 pm we go back to Kagoshima, and continued our activity in Kaikan while prepared new spirit for the next day.

Miniature of Sakurajima Volcano Day 4 (Wednesday, 8 March 2017) This day was very amazing for me, because for the first time in my life I tried to ride Sinkanshen, we go to Kagoshima Central Station by Tram, and at 8.30 am we arrived at the station. We start from Kagoshima Station at 8.56 am and arrived in Shin Minamata Station at 9.26 am. We continued our trip to National Institute for Minamata Disease, we walking around and got a lecture by Dr. Megumi Yamamoto about Minamata disease, he invited us to visit many place there, we tried to measured mercury level on our body by using hair, I really thankfull, because I got new knowledge about that. We visit Spain Restaurant for take a lunch at 12.00 pm, the view from the restaurant was very beautiful,we can see the blue sea from there. I really enjoyed the moment. After that we visited Crane Park in Izumi City, when arrived there I really amazed, I think that no one place in Japan that not make me amazed, I see a thousand crane with many species, we learn how to make an origami there. We watch about how to manage thousand crane there, I m speechless, it was very amazing. And our last visit is Old Houses of Samurai in Izumi City, we look around the houses and tried to use traditional clothes of Japan there, the owner of that house told us about History there.

Hotel AZ in Izumi City Day 5 (Thursday, 9 March 2017) Our jouney today start from AZ hotel in Izumi City, the first place that we visited in 5 th day is Tsuruta Dam, Tsuruta dam was very amazing, there we learn about how Japanese people controlling the flood, we walk around and gived many information about controlling flood by using the dam, after that we visited Sogi Waterfall, somebody called this waterfall as Niagara of Japan, Sogi Waterfall was very beautiful and wonderful. And then the last we visited the place that I can t forget in my life, for the first time in my life I met Snow, it was really incredible journey in my life. We visit Ebino Plateau in Kirishima National Park. I really excited although very cold. I will never forget that day, we walk around, making a Snowman, and go to the museum. One of many things that I see in museum is Butterfly collectin in Kirishima National Park. We have to go back to Kagoshima City after visit Ebino Plateau. See you again Snow.

Butterfly Collections in Kirishima National Park Day 6 (Friday, 10 March 2017) This is our last day in Japan, next day we will go back to our Country. We start our activity today with visiting Sengan-en Garden, Suzuki Sensei told us about history of Sengan-en. I really interested with my last trip, I take many pictures in Sengan-en, after that we visited Kagakukan. We take a lunch in Kagoshima Central Station, it was our last Lunch in Kagoshima because next day we will go back. We go to Tenmonkan after lunch, we bought some souvenir for my family and friend in Indonesia. I don t buy many souvenir because I only bring bag, so I m afraid if my baggage is over. We go back to Korimoto Campus at 4.00 pm by using tram, and arrived in campus we make a short report for our exchange program. We have a Farewell party in Restaurant in Korimoto Campus. I m happy and sad in the same time, I m happy because I met many Proffesor and friendly person there, I really enjoyed every moment in Kagoshima, and I;m sad because tomorrow I have to go back ti my Country. I don t even know when I can visited japan again. I really sad to leave Kagoshima, Sensei and all of Participants of this program. We enjoy the farewell party, talking each other about Japan, Indonesia and about the experience that we ve got in this program.

Thank you for inviting me as a participants in this program. I really speechless and don t know what I have to say, I really fall in love with Japan, it s the biggest pleasure can visited Japan, learn about Japanese Culture and Environment. I hope many things that I got during my stay in Japan can be useful and give little spirit for my friend in Indonesia. I will tell my friend that Japan is lovely country with friendly society. I still remember how beautiful

and wonderful Japan, I wish I can get Master Degree in Japan especially in Kagoshima University. The end of this report I wanna say thank you so much once again. May success always be with us and Arigatou Gozaimasu, see you in another chance, Japan.
