Ghana Arrival Orientation Information Team Mission Program Summer 2017 Who will meet me at the airport and where? After you have gone through Immigration and Customs, AFS volunteers will meet you at the Arrival Hall of the airport. How will I recognize the AFS volunteers meeting them at the airport? Please watch out for volunteer in any AFS paraphernalia. For example volunteers wearing AFS Ghana T-shirts etc. Where will the orientation take place? In Accra, the capitol city of Ghana. How will I get to the orientation site? Your group, program leaders, and volunteers will travel together by bus to the orientation site. How long is the orientation? 2 days. This includes arrival day and second day where participants will go to their host parents. In what language(s) will the orientation be conducted? English Will there be language instruction at the orientation? Yes. Basic Twi. What type of activities will happen during orientation? Orientations are interactive. Some of the topics to be discussed are "Health issues, and The Adjustment Cycle, among others. What materials should I bring with them to orientation? Bring a print out of your Safety Tips booklet. Will I have access to my luggage during the arrival orientation? Yes
Ghana Arrival Orientation Information Team Mission Program Summer 2017 Will I have a chance to exchange money between the time of arrival and the end of orientation? Yes. We usually arrange for an official from a Forex (Foreign Exchange) Bureau to change money for participants. Will I have access to a telephone which can accommodate long distance calls by using a phone card? Will there be Internet access? Team Leaders will be provided with phones which can make long distance calls. From this phone you can call your natural parents at the orientation site and inform them of your arrival. There is the option of bringing your own phone, but if the phones are coded you will need to pay for the phone to be decoded. Sometimes the amount spent on decoding could buy a phone which is less expensive. Volunteers would assist you to purchase new phones in case you want to purchase one. You can purchase units/minutes for your phones and make long distance calls after the orientation. You can check your e-mail after the orientation through the modem, internet cafes or at home. How will I travel to my host families and when? You will be picked up by your host family or be sent to your host family by bus after the orientation.
