FALL MUST DO S When the leaves start to change and drop, and the air becomes a little more crisp and cool, the locals begin to smile a bit more. Fall in Choctaw Country means the fun is just about to begin. SCENIC DRIVES It s really not too hard to find a breathtaking view in Choctaw Country, especially in the fall. One drive you must do is the 54-mile Talimena Scenic Drive, stretching from Talihina, OK to Mena, AR. Drive it slow as you unwind while taking in all the amazing turnouts and spectacular views along the way. CAVANAL HILL What makes a hill a hill and a mountain a mountain? Well, a hill is a naturally raised area of land less than 2,000 feet tall. Anything taller is a mountain. And at 1,999 feet that makes Poteau s Cavanal Hill the World s Highest Hill! Tell your friends you not only summited the World s Highest Hill, but that you also soaked-in the breathtaking view of LeFlore County from the top in the beauty of autumn. Walk, hike, or drive to the summit and create a memory that will last forever. 6

Seasons change. So should your view.

FALL MUST DO S (CONT.) HOMETOWN EVENTS In Choctaw Country, fall means one thing: our hometown events are in full swing! We ve got something for everybody from the classic cars at the Robbers Cave Fall Festival, to the hot air balloons at the Poteau Balloon Festival. And you won t want to miss out on one of the many annual Fall Foliage Festivals held throughout the region. Hometown events in Choctaw Country offer the perfect escape for a weekend adventure. CABINS Picture a weekend or even a week or two of playing board games, taking gorgeous hikes through the color-changing woods, and sipping hot apple cider by the fire pit. It s all waiting for you and the family at one of the many cabins in Choctaw Country. You may never want to head back home. SHOPPING After taking in all the fall scenery and events we have to offer in Choctaw Country, it s time to head out for some incredible shopping! Pick your gifts, apparel, and mementos from any of the storefronts all bursting with hometown pride and smiling faces. 9

CHOCTAW COUNTRY PIE GUIDE After a great meal when you re absolutely stuffed what s the one thing everyone seems to still have room for? Yep. Pie. In Choctaw Country, we do lots of things very well, one of which is making pies. Check out where to grab a slice. Or just grab a pie and a fork. We won t tell. SOUTHERN BELLE HEAVENER, OK What s better than enjoying some downhome southern cooking and a big, delicious slice of pie? How about enjoying them while sitting inside a refurbished train car? When you visit the Southern Belle, you ll have a dining experience you won t soon forget with a menu featuring seasonal specialties, traditional favorites, and savory sides. And make sure you save room for a slice of their famous old-fashioned strawberry pie! ANGIE S CIRCUS CITY DINER HUGO, OK For over 20 years, locals and travelers alike have flocked to this quirky diner renowned for their homemade delights and some of the best desserts in Choctaw Country. If you want to attempt to re-create Angie s recipes, she ll even show you how on their Facebook page! But no one can seem to get their meringue quite like Angie s fluffy and tall, bursting with perfect flavor. And the meringue is just one of many things worth stopping for. THE BLUE ROOSTER HOCHATOWN, OK Don t worry you won t only find rooster on the menu here! In this light-hearted atmosphere, you ll be delivered delicious food, a warm smile, and a warning to save room for dessert! And they re not kidding - their fried pies, like most of the menu, simply cannot be beat well, unless you drop a healthy-sized scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Heck, when it s this good, you may just want to have dessert for dinner. WAREHOUSE WILLY S POTEAU, OK Four words: Reese s. Peanut. Butter. Pie. Stroll in to find a quirky menu, dollar bills all over the walls, and some of the best pie you ve ever tasted. Leave a dollar of your own on the wall, then look for it the next time you come back. And the next time. And the next time. And the 10

MEMORIES OF CLAYTON by Chief Gary Batton It means something very special to tell people Clayton is my hometown. Growing up just miles from the Choctaw Nation Capitol, Tvshka Homma, I gained a deep love and appreciation for my Choctaw heritage especially from my many visits to the great Museum, which has proudly stood there since 1884. The opportunity to spend one s formative years in a community of people who really look out for one another is a true blessing for which I will always be grateful. In fact, to this day some of my closest friends are those who graduated high school alongside me, and we ll always share a special bond. We ve been blessed to have lived in a community that has always supported one another and we still enjoy sharing stories from the past. As a child, I used to visit one of the local businesses in town King s Variety Store. I loved that place so much, I ended up actually working there as a senior in high school. King s is still open today, so if you see it along your journey, be sure to stop by and take a moment to shop in a little piece of Clayton history. Some of my fondest memories happened right here in Clayton. Each year it became tradition for us to go to the homecomings where all of the local families would gather spending hours sharing stories from the past and present much like any normal family reunion, except we have a BIG family! I love thinking back to the wonderful fishing, hunting and off-road four-wheeling adventures my friends and I took through the beautiful hills surrounding Clayton, and by the quiet and serene waters of Sardis Lake. Saturday nights, everyone in the whole valley would show up. After the movie, everyone would head straight to The Dairy Barn Drive-In Café to have a great meal, play pool and video games, and laugh for hours. When we were all full, we would jump in our cars and head to Main Street where the town would be completely filled with cars from one end to the other! As you can likely tell, I m quite proud of my hometown. If you ve never visited Clayton, I would encourage you to plan a visit. When you go, make sure you check out the incredible rock formations of Rock City alongside a mountain called Flag Pole Tower, located just outside the city limits of Clayton. While you re there, ask the locals about Mushroom Rock and Maxwell Creek Caves. Let me assure you, the trip and the beauty surrounding my hometown will be well worth the drive. Come see us soon. Yakoke, (Thank you) Chief Gary Batton I have so many other wonderful memories of this hidden treasure in Choctaw Country. One that springs to mind are the many nights my friends and I spent at the local drive-in theatre. Most

SCENIC DRIVES One aspect of Choctaw Country that cannot be missed in the fall and winter (quite literally!) is the beauty of nature through the changing of the seasons. The best way to take the beauty in is by road, taking one of the many scenic drives Choctaw Country has to offer. TALIMENA SCENIC DRIVE A gorgeous 54-mile route spanning one of the highest mountain ranges between the Appalachians and the Rockies, Talimena Scenic Drive treats you to one breathtaking panorama after another. It s the ideal place for relaxing, having some fun, and for you photographers, finding the perfect shot. ROBBERS CAVE STATE PARK With cliffs up to 1,500 feet tall and 25 miles of hiking trails, Robbers Cave is a must for shutterbugs. Enjoy the view from Lake Carlton, one of the many lakes carved into the woodlands of the Sans Bois Mountains. Drive through historic sites where Jesse James and Belle Starr once used as their hideaway. PRESBYTERIAN FALLS The Lower Mountain Fork River is a fantastic destination for trout fishing, kayaking, and photography. Capture the perfect photo featuring riverside trees, gorgeous rock formations, and white waters that will tell a grand story in your photo album. SARDIS LAKE Surrounded by the Potato Hills, Sardis Lake has a number of scenic views of the area, including the Jackfork Creek and Flagpole Mountain. All types of wildlife, including the bald eagle, are known to visit the area. CAVANAL HILL Once you conquer the World s Tallest Hill, prepare for an absolutely stunning view of Sugar Loaf Mountain from the summit. Gaze upon miles upon miles of the Ouachita Mountains. From a beautiful observation deck, soak in all the vast beauty that Choctaw Country has to offer. HEAVENER RUNESTONE PARK Step back in time at Heavener Runestone, where ancient markings are rumored to be the work of Vikings. Explore the breathtaking green gully of Coal Creek as you watch overhead for hang gliders launching from the nearby 1400 foot ridges above. 24

Life is not a destation. Enjoy the journey.

OKLAHOMA HERITAGE HORSE SANCTUARY Hooves drumming the solid ground. Trembling earth beneath them. Manes dancing. Close your eyes and hear their music. See their coats of many colors. These are the Colonial Spanish Horses. Better known as the Spanish Mustang or Native American Horse, the Colonial Spanish Horse is a direct descendant of the horses Spanish Conquistadors brought over to America in the 1500s. After the Choctaw people first encountered them in the 1600s, these horses became an essential part of their native culture. The breed is unique known for their alertness, endurance, athletic ability and pleasant disposition. These majestic creatures once freely ran the mountains of southeast Oklahoma but, due to the loss of their habitat, they now require daily care as they are not a self-sustaining breed. Established in 2015 to promote the preservation of this endangered breed, the Oklahoma Heritage Horse Sanctuary (OHHS) is the largest supporter of the Colonial Spanish Horse/Heritage Horse of Oklahoma, as designated in State Resolution No. 34. From May to November, the OHHS welcomes visitors with guided tours each beginning with an introduction to the breed, historical facts and information on the sanctuary. The primitive viewing pastures provide a natural setting for the horses that offers great photo opportunities and hands-on, interactive moments with the mustangs. When you leave this little slice of Mustang Heaven, you ll take with you stories to share and memories for a lifetime.
