To celebrate we are bringing back 40 programs and events from the past 40 years. Some of these are familiar ongoing programs that we will offer with a days-gone-by flair, while others are one-time programs that were a hit back in the day. All programs occur at the Anita Purves Center, 1505 N Broadway, Urbana unless noted otherwise. This program is a special opportunity for kids to explore Busey Woods at night in search of wild owls. Bring your young one to the nature center for creative playtime with guidance and additional supplies from a nature play facilitator. Learn how to use binoculars, spot and identify common local birds and discover a bit about each bird s natural history. Back by popular demand, storytellers Kim Petzing, Kim Sheahan, Kath Brinkmann and Dan Keding. This pilot program for children who have not yet attended kindergarten takes place entirely outdoors, no matter the weather! Discover the secret life of the bird with the upside-down brain during a guided twilight stroll. A naturalist will guide you and your child as you share a special time together hiking in Busey Woods. Students participating in the SPLASH program will work alongside a local photographer to capture moments in nature. After your bird hike, enjoy coffee, light snacks and conversation in the Wildlife Observation Room. Best In Show Photographic Print Competition February 9-17, 2019 Lincoln Square, Urbana Entry Deadline: Jan 30, 2019 Photo Credit: 2018 1st Place Winner of Animal Category - Curiosity by Emily Hartman The Urbana Park District and Champaign County Camera Club are proud to announce their 18th annual competition at Lincoln Square next February. This is a great opportunity for amateur photographers to have their photos publicly exhibited and professionally judged. There is a five-piece limit, and all prints must be mounted on 3/16 foamcore. For information on categories, eligibility and matting requirements see our website at www.urbanaparks.org or pick up a Best in Show brochure and entry form at the Phillips Recreation Center, Lincoln Square, or the News-Gazette. Call Janet at 217-367-1544 ext. 277 for more information. Early Bird rate on entry fee: $5 for first print and $3 each for the next four. The regular entry fee is $10 for the first print and $3 each for the next four. Champaign-Urbana Read Across America Celebration Saturday, March 2, 10am-1pm Lincoln Square Mall FREE! Join the Urbana Park District and more than 40 local businesses and organizations as we celebrate literacy! Hands-on activities, story-tellers, costumed characters, a special parent and toddler area, local celebrity greeters, and books read in multiple languages, make this event a family favorite. Boneyard Arts Festival Art Show Saturday, April 6, 12-3pm Meadowbrook Interpretive Center FREE! Sculptor Jaci Willis will be on hand with a special Boneyard exhibit. Her sculptures Surge at the Wandell Sculpture Garden and Big Fish, Little Fish at the Phillips Recreation Center are the inspiration for more than 80 works of art by students from our SPLASH program (Students Playing and Learning After School Hours). This show will be part of the Boneyard Arts Festival, a county-wide arts celebration put on by 40 North 88 West, the Champaign County Arts Council. Egg Hunt with a Splash! Saturday, April 20 Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center Ages 2-10 Fee: $6R/$8NR Dive into the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center and collect many surprise filled eggs. Wear your suit, bring a PLASTIC bag and get ready for some eggstra fun! Registration fee includes admissions to the Egg Hunt plus one daily admission pass to the pool. Participants must re-enter the pool during public hours to swim. *Each age group will start ON TIME. If you are late, you will miss your egg hunt. Refunds are not given for tardiness. 6th Annual Crystal Lake Park Roots Walk Friday, May 17, 6-8pm Crystal Lake Park Rain Location: Anita Purves Center FREE! Listen to live blues, roots, folk and Americana music while strolling past the mature trees of our oldest park. This sunset event, brought to you by the Urbana Park District, the C-U Folk and Roots Festival, and the Urbana Parks Foundation features a selection of soloists and small combos scattered along the walks of Crystal Lake Park. Parking is available at the Crystal Lake Park Family Aquatic Center; the musicians will be along the park road, close to the North Woods Pavilion. Rain location is inside the Anita Purves Center in the case of inclement weather.
