However if you could scrape up some cash please consider donating it to the Conservancy so that Table Top can finally be opened after all these years. Would also like to thank Lorain County OHC for their generous donation to the fund. Enjoyed hearing about Dianna and Sam s adventures at Barkcamp. Sam took off on Dianna and was missing for 1 ½ hours-he was found in a parking lot, safe and sound, but poor Dianna was panicked for a while. Don t forget the clam bake is coming-get your reservations in. My 2 year old filly at the track- Ticketoutofhere-has had 2 official workouts and needs just one more to be eligible to race. Jack s Stall 8-2014 We had a super work session August 9 th. 14 MOHC members and friends helped build a section of turnpike on the Valley Trail by the beaver dam bridge. It looks great. As usual Karen served up a fine lunch which was enjoyed by all of the volunteers and Jeff and Chad of the CVNP. Linda and I along with Kim McAninch and Dianna Weaver had a very nice time at the Gibby Memorial Ride the first weekend in August. Quite a few trail projects were completed. Jack Preece of Guernsey County was the 2014 Gibby Award winner. The brand new 24 by 40 pavilion was dedicated to Larry Matthews in honor of his longtime service. It was a very special evening. Campfire entertainment was provided by Kim when she was attacked by a rabid wolf. She can really squeal. Although I am the ride manager Linda and I were able to kick back and enjoy the weekend. Several wonderful OHC members have stepped up and assumed most of the responsibilities associated with the ride. Linda and I thank them from the bottom of our hearts. Two Spot, the horse that I have on loan from Gussie Anderson, while Willie is on pasture rest is a very dependable mount and a super trail horse. We walks just as fast as Willie but is more laid back and happy to be anyplace with a group of horses. Front, middle or bringing up the rear he is a happy horse. The next Fun & Fellowship MOHC Saturday day ride is August 23. The scheduled ride is Wetmore Trailhead to Boston Store. We will get to ride the turnpike that was built August 9 th. A large turnout would be nice. Thought for the month: I may not be good looking, but I make up for it with my dazzling lack of personality. AUGUST 2014 TRAIL REPORT The volunteers assembled at Robinson at 8:30am.. This morning, Peggy Costic left her fine equine steed at home and cruised in on her gorgeous black and chrome Harley. (too many steeds not enough time) The August 9 project was repair of the Valley Trail in the area across from where Truxell Road ends at AP Road. Flat stones and wood framing was staged at the top of the hill on that area of the trail. The flat part starting at the bottom of the hill was always muddy. Cloth was laid down, the frame was carefully lined up including checking with a level. On this were Peggy Costic, Becky Sheryak, Wayne Crouse and Rosemary Young. Once that was done, Jack Weese, Greg Monsanty, Jeff Pettigrew and Chad Marks, drilled holes through the wood at the precise locations, Sheila Rizer was one of the folks who started the rebar in to the hole after which she began the work of pounding the rebar down using a device with a handle on each side placed on top of the rebar. Joining in pounding in rebar were Caleb Earnshaw, Hannah Stein, Chris Stein, Greg Monsanty and all these folks also used heavy sledge hammers to get the job done. Was like watching an Olympic competition Awesome skill and power Jeff and Chad had done all the prep work to line up the job on Thursday and Friday, staging all the material at the site. The work site was from the south end of the small bridge to the bottom of the hill. After the first two frames and cloth were set Chad proceeded to bring in the large stone that forms the base of the trail tread. Helping to smooth out the stone were Molly Eastwood, Rosemary Young and Patricia Vance. After all the large stone was installed then Chad and Jeff brought in dirt with small stone in it for the top surface of the trail. Louise Harting, Molly Eastwood, Bonnie Bennington, Patricia Vance, Hannah Stein, and Chris Stein cleared a drainage area at the bottom of the hill that carries water from the east to the west side of the trail and over into a wetland area. After clearing and properly grading the area so that water could flow downhill, the group set in flat stones to form a hardened path for the water to run over on its way across the trail. This provides a solid surface for horses to step on and avoids creating mud holes. This crew had much debate and discussion in their quest for perfection and utilizing advanced puzzle solving skills in order to set each stone at the optimal position. All of the folks for sure were having a great time and laughing and joking while getting the job done. The entire project was completed to perfection All tools and equipment were picked up and taken out and everyone headed back to Robinson for lunch. Karen Knuth provided a fine lunch of pizza, salad, and watermelon. Sheila Rizer contributed her fabulous banana bread. Support crew back at Robinson consisted of Hugh Freeman and Linda Weese. On July 26, Jeff arranged for Chad to bring material to the site in order to repair the mud area at bottom of short hill on Riding Run that is just above the creek crossing of the loop. As this is very near the connector road, the material was staged on the roadside, Chad brought the tractor with the loader and most of the work was done with the tractor and loader. As you know, our volunteers often go out on days other than the regular monthly sessions to take care of some smaller matters. Most of the folks who were contacted were not available so only Patricia showed up. So another repair to one of our beloved trails has been accomplished. That area is now nice and solid and should be so for years to come In September our session will be on National Public Lands Day September 27. The public is invited to this one. The Park in cooperation with the Conservancy plans to do the same as was done for National Trails Day. All volunteers will park at Robinson. Our folks will be able to camp with horses on the front field only. Any non OHC volunteer who wishes to camp will be permitted to do that on Saturday night. They will camp in the back field as was done for National Trails Day. Two or three Park persons will also camp as well over Saturday night. Jeff Pettigrew is in charge of preparing everything needed for the project on that day. This includes staging materials. The project is improving Langes hill from the creek crossing to top of hill where trail is on flat ground. All volunteers will hike in from Robinson. There were over 120 volunteers on National Trails Day and as you all know, all the projects got done The goal for September 27 is to get the entire project done. The official time for this one is 11 am to 2pm. Our group will have some smaller projects to do before that starting at 8:30 am until 11 and then go to the main project. This has been a great year for horse trails The Park has really focused on fixing horse trails and for sure we equestrians truly appreciate it In October, the project is to open Tabletop Trail. On Make a Difference Day, October 25, the Conservancy and the Park will invite the public to come out and lend a hand with this one also. Thanks to the support of the Conservancy and our joint fund raising project for this trail, the Park will have the funds to keep Jeff, George and Chad on through near the end of November so this trail can be completed. (Trail Report Continued) At our quarterly meeting with the Park, Tom Toledo, who has been with the Park in maintenance for a number of years is filling in for Bill Zimmer s position, at your trail committee s inquiry, made it clear that our group, who is committed to providing funds for Tabletop, will be kept fully informed on the costs as the project progresses. Man hours are the biggest part of rebuilding the damaged parts of Tabletop. It will be Jeff Pettigrew, Chad Marks and George Lalos who will be doing this work. Without your donations to this fund raising project, these hard working men would be furloughed at the end of the season. Our funds will keep them on through November. Our club is dedicated to helping the National Park build and maintain the equestrian trails in the Park. We all enjoy these trails and appreciate them. Going back to the beginning of our club, none of these trails would be here without all the effort and dedication of our members. This is our Park and these are our beloved trails. Lorain chapter donated $500. All donations go to the Tabletop trail project. Make your check payable to the Conservancy for CVNP and send them to the Conservancy. Keep in mind that any member may be nominated from the floor for any office at the Medina OHC November Mee.ng. Important Membership Information- Dues Increase for 2015 Dues for 2015 will increase by $5 for all membership types (regular, family and association). This increase was sanctioned by the state during this year s state meetings. New Rates: Individual - $25 with Liability Insurance - $45 Family - $35 with Liability Insurance - $75 Association - $35 Secondary will also increase Individual - $8 Family - $10 All membership forms for each county will be updated, so please be sure to wait until the newsletter includes the new membership form for 2015 before renewing your membership. This should occur in September. The individual chapters will benefit in that we will get to keep an additional $1 for individual memberships and $2 for family. 2014 MOHC State Ride and Pig Roast Thanks to the efforts of many, many volunteers the 2014 MOHC State Ride and Pig Roast was a huge success. I won t try to name everyone because if I miss someone I would feel bad. However; I must name a few key players. Tim Stein, Hugh Freeman and Louise Harding headed up the food. Peggy Costic and Becky Sheryak did the club store, silent auction and were official greeters. Jonathan Hughes outdid himself sell the 50-50 tickets. Linda Weese took care of reservations and semi kept me in line. I was able to get everyone parked and moved in with no drama or trauma and no one got stuck at move out time. That is always good. We had almost 50 rigs in Robinson Field. It did not feel too crowded but I would not want to try to park any more rigs than that. I try to make sure that any rig can pull out at any time without having to move any other rigs. The weather was perfect except for a little rain on Sunday morning which wasn t enough to deter folks from riding. Many of our guests commented that they could see how much work has gone into our trails and that they loved riding them. The food was excellent. This year we did pork shoulders and butts instead of a whole hog. Much less waste than with a whole hog. Besides I was never able to auction off the head. A mighty fine breakfast was served Sunday morning. We also had hot dogs and baked beans on Friday evening. Thank you to our Food Chairmen Tim Stein and Louise Harting with partner Hugh Freeman. The folks riding the moonlight ride Friday evening had a good time. They went to the Covered Bridge and beyond to points farther west. They found that a bunch of horses on the Covered Bridge make a lot of noise and that the section of the Valley Trail between the rail road tracks and Everett Road can be quite dark under the tree cover before the moon comes up. Everyone came back smiling. The silent auction and club clothing store were very popular with our guests. The silent auction and the 50-50 raffle earned quite a bit of money for the club. Thank you Peggy Costic, Becky Sheryak, Jonathan Hughes and all those who donated items. Kat Slavik s father, Lou won the 50-50 which he then donated back to MOHC. Thank you, Lou. Brenda Montandon and her strummin friends provided old-time acoustic music after dinner. Thank you all for an enjoyable evening. We had guests from 16 county chapters and guest one from PA. That was a very good representation of OHC Chapters. It was so nice to see so many old friends and to make new ones. Thanks to all of you who came to the ride. You were all there to have a really good time and I think you did. Cindy Barnett from Montgomery County traveled the farthest to get to the ride. Cindy is the State OHC Grievance Committee Chairman and my helper with the OHC State Rides. Back in the day, Cindy started the State Rides. Arden Sims of Washington County enjoyed a ride on Two Spot, my loaner trail horse. Arden is a candidate for the State President position at the election this coming November. My friend Gussie Anderson of Hocking County was unable to attend. Her stepson Danny was ill with a summer flu bug and was not able to bring Gussie to the ride. For many years Gussie was the State Trail Rides chairman. Many folks were asking about her. My little trail horse Willie is on pasture rest at her farm. A big thank you goes to our trail work volunteers, field prep crew, set-up crew, tear-down crew, food helpers and servers, the registration crew, and everyone else that helped with all of the many details to put on the event. We couldn t have the ride without your help and dedication. We also wish to thank the CVNP staff for their help getting Robinson Field into tip-top shape, clearing down trees at the last moment and their continuous work maintaining and improving the bridle trails. I believe that this was the best State Ride that MOHC has ever hosted. I have heard nothing but positive comments about the ride. MOHC members have much to be proud of.
