Page 1 Chapter Newsletter for August 2004 Est. 1990 Vol. #08-2004 Director s Report It s August and time for STURGIS. Due to the fact that many of the officers and chapter members are heading to Sturgis, we will have our chapter meeting on August 20th. If you are heading to Sturgis, be sure to stop in at the Civic Center in Rapid City and enjoy the HOG hospitality room and get your first peek at the new 2005 model bikes. You can also test ride 2005 bikes at the Super 8 Motel in Sturgis. If you don t want to head that far you can take in the Wisconsin State HOG Rally in Chippewa Falls running August 20th through the 22nd. Thanks to the Ryan s (Sue, Wayne and Norb) for hosting the brunch ride on June 27th. A special thank you to Daryl Hinton and Randy Ellis for putting on the poker run on July 11th. The weather put an early damper on the ride but these guys pulled it off with great success. The LOH gals held their annual fun ride on July 17th. Thanks to Traci, Shelli, Gail, Myrna and LeAnn for a great time. After the LOH ride, several chapter members rode to Evansdale to present the Lee family the donation money for Kelsey. I don t think there was a dry eye during the presentation. If there is anything that says Northeast Iowa - Waukon Chapter, this is it. Despite all the different walks of life we come from, we are still there to help people in need. Thank you chapter members for being the great bunch of guys and gals that you are. Please see Myrna s article and pictures for more details on the Lee donation. On August 29th we will have our annual chapter picnic. Please note the side article on this event for the location and time. Activities Officer Jim Reiser has been working hard on this event to make this years picnic the best so far. I hope to see everyone at the chapter meeting on the 20th. Ride safe and take care. Norb, Sue, & Wayne s Sunday Dinner Ride Page 2 I thought I should let you know how our dinner ride turned out on the 27th. We had great weather for a change, as you all know if I have anything to do with planning a ride, it is almost certain that it will rain. There was rain in the forecast but we missed most of it. We met at the station in Waukon and seven of us members departed for Prairie du Chien at 12 noon. Traveling east on A52 we enjoyed the beautiful scenery and perfect temps in the low 70s and partly cloudy skies. It is amazing how green and lush everything is compared to the last two years. We then took X42 into Harpers Ferry then down the west side of the big river to highway 76, on into Marquette and crossed the river to Prairie. Arriving at 12:50 we were happy to see two more members waiting for us at the Hungry House cafe. I don t know if this is a first or not, but as Wayne wanted me to lead the ride, he and Sue rode swing. Usually he does the leading, as he knows the roads a lot better than I do. With lively conversation and all you can eat buffet we sure didn t go away hungry. The food was really good and so many different things to choose from. I liked the asparagus rapped in thin sliced ham and covered with melted cheese. They also had my favorite, chocolate pudding. I think we should hit that place more often! About the time we were done eating it was raining outside. So we visited till it was done raining then went out to dry our seats off. More visiting and I did take some pics of the guys and gals before we all departed. The sky was dark to the north, so Wayne, Sue, and I headed for Postville on 18 west. We then cut over to Spillville, then Protivin, and on home. We only hit a couple spots where we did see a few sprinkles but that was it. I hope the rest of the members got home in dry condition also. Thank you all for coming on our ride, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I, Wayne, and Sue did. Till we get together again, enjoy those Harleys!!! Page 4 Ladies of Harley Annual Ride Hi everyone, Wow, what a beautiful day it was on Saturday July 17th, the L.O.H. ride was filled with sunshine and good friends. I want to again thank the chapter for the donation to Kelsey Lee, my cousin s daughter, who has cancer. Kelsey is 14. After lunch on the L.O.H. ride, we delivered the check and signed T-shirt to Kelsey s family, as she was in the hospital again. Z and Mark gave their winnings from the ride to Kelsey, a teddy bear and a Harley cap. We had a good visit with Kelsey s Dad, sister, aunt and cousins. All of us tried to keep our eyes dry, but we were unsuccessful. As Mark Z said, We did a good thing here today. The fellowship that our chapter has is so wonderful. Gosh, if the world could be like this caring and loving chapter all would be right with the world. We took pictures to put in this newsletter. Z and I thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. Myrna Ellis / Hinton Poker Run Well it started off foggy and with the sky threatening to once again dump on us, we set off for the Harley shop at Waukon. Daryl, Cyndy and the kids joined me for the start of the 115 mile ride. Shortly along came some dedicated riders from Independence and beyond to partake in the days scheduled events. We still managed to get eighteen people out for the observation/ poker run before the rain came. It seemed that the organizers rode in more rain than the riders, oh well! Everyone headed North along the river and after the 2nd stop the sun came out and it turned out to be a beautiful riding day. We finished the ride through the beautiful Yucatan valley in SE Minnesota, with the final stop at Brenda s in Waukon. A special thanks goes out to the Rivers Edge in Lansing, The Shellhorn in Brownsville, Houston Texaco, Spring Grove Kwik Trip and Brenda s in Waukon for helping with the ride. We had some good door prizes and cash for the winners, so try to make these chapter events. Remember we ride, Rain or Shine!! Randy & Jan - Daryl & Cyndy
