First I must apologize, because we have not been able to get rooms in Williams for the Arizona State Rally. We re going to have to reschedule our trip to Williams for another weekend this summer and use it for a gateway to the Grand Canyon ride like we did last year when the rally was in Yuma. I m particularly sorry for those members that have prepaid for the rally. There are some single rooms here and there in town, but nothing to accommodate the Chapter. I heard the Singing Pig won t be open that week either, something about a European Vacation, but I still really like Williams at Rally time. They are so welcoming and biker friendly I hate to miss it. I also hate being the bearer of bad news, so I personally blocked rooms for the Solvang, Torrey, Ely, and Cortez overnighters. I ll probably have Idaho, Beatty, Palm Springs and Lake Havasu bookings done by the time you read this newsletter. I m pleased to pass on the mileage report from Lead Road Captain Glen Oelrich, we ve already ridden 151,351 miles at the end of April. We ve had a very nice Spring in the area and very good turnouts for the rides. I ll also note that we amassed that total without March or April overnighters. With summer coming the mileage should really start to climb! I hope you re enjoying the rides, especially the surprise on May 4 th. I hesitated to mention it now, but I made the trip yesterday so I assume the Chapter will make it on the 4 th. I hope that doesn t jinx us! I m sure most of you have heard that Mark Dukes left Red Rock Harley Davidson. He stopped by our last meet and eat, by invitation, and we gave him a nice plaque on behalf of the Chapter, thanking him for all he s done Continued on Page 2 S.N.H.O.G. The Director s Saddle...continued Saddle...continued for us as Chapter members and customers. I m sure we ll be introduced to the new GM at Red Rock shortly. FYI in the meantime I ve heard his name is Chris and he just started a couple of days ago. If you re at RRHD be sure to stop in and welcome Chris to town and congratulate him on his new job. Many of us just returned from the Laughlin River Run, and I hope you all had a good time. The Motor Company was there in force with a HOG pin stop, demo rides, a jump-start program and even free lunches promoting their new Harley-Davidson Road House Customs Sausages. I had a couple of different kinds and thought they were quite tasty. On the downside things happened in Laughlin that just won t stay in Laughlin. See my article later in this issue for more. A final reminder, please remember the Nation of Patriots Golf Tournament is coming up May 17 th! If you play golf please talk to Dave Bondo Bondurant for your chance to play Paiute and benefit the Nation of Patriots. If you re not a player please talk to Karen Heriford and see if she can find something for which you can volunteer. This is the main fundraiser for the Chapter to obtain the funds we distribute right here in the valley to wounded veterans. It s not too late pitch in! For those of you taking part in the Memorial Day weekend Gold Rush Ride remember to get your bike into the dealership for service. That s a 1400+ mile weekend of twisties and elevation changes. Make sure your bike is prepared, your tires are properly inflated, etc. Who better to give your bike a once over than the techs at the dealership? And because things always happen at the worst time and the worst location, make sure your Road America coverage is in force and up to date! Remember, the base coverage is pretty much only adequate for around Las Vegas. You ll want to have the Ultra level if you have a problem on an overnighter! I just checked my card and my coverage expires 5/3/2014, so I m calling now! Let a word to the wise be sufficient. Don t forget the Pork Roll is coming up May 10 th. If you saw the Southwest Police Motorcycle Competition or last year s Pork Roll, you know what a treat it is to see the area motorcycle officers in competition. We ll do a little pre-ride to get there and then watch and be humbled by the best riders around. This is a great thing to invite friends, relatives and children of all ages to see! It s not just for riders, everyone can appreciate the way the officers ride and it s good for community relations. I d also like to remind you of the big Swap Meet at LVHD on May 17th. Have you accumulated half a Harley in parts in your garage as you ve customized your ride, or perhaps are looking for a used part or two? Wouldn t it be nice to get sellers and shoppers together? LVHD will be the place to be! Shopping will be from 10am to 3pm. Swap Meets are great for bargain hunting and for getting some parts that you no longer need into the hands of someone who can use them. That s all I have for now, and it was probably more than you wanted to read. You know what we need to do now? Ride and have fun! Page 2

WTH A quick check of the internet reveals a site called knowyourmeme.com. A meme is an idea that spreads from person to person within a culture. We ve all gotten meme emails: grumpy cat this and that, political if you like your whatever, you can keep your whatever emails, etc. One of the meme s you may have encountered is (What Has Been Seen) Cannot Be Unseen. It is an Internet axiom, which states that one literally cannot get rid of the mental image that becomes part of the memory after looking at a disturbing photo or a video. The phrase is commonly used as an incredulous reaction to a shock site or a surprising or unexpected image. Philosophers have studied the vividness of mental images in the human brain for centuries. While it is likely similar notions about our visual memory had been made before, the earliest known usage of the phrase cannot be unseen on the web can be found in an inspiring quote by Canadian cartoonist David Sim which reads: Once a profound truth has been seen, it cannot be unseen. Sim s quote was cited in a number of blog posts and essays throughout the early 2000s. However, its first iteration in the context of describing a traumatic experience can be attributed to a personal blog post titled Some Images, Once Seen, Cannot Be Unseen, written by Joey devilla on December 15th, 2004. Now nearly 10 years later we have the definitive example, and it is right here in our own little HOG Chapter. I saw it live, and I have been traumatized. I m not talking about PTSD level here; no it is much less serious than that. It is, however, serious. I m afraid there will be nightmares and sleep disorders in my future. Lucky for you, dear readers, I am a sharing kind of guy. Misery loves company. If I were the only person to be traumatized, how could I find a support group to join? How could I petition for entitlement benefits so I can get well again? So I memorialized the event in a photograph. The driver s name is being withheld for obvious reasons. By now I m sure you re all yelling, get to the point and are dying to see the image. First, however, I must caution this is NSFW. NSFW means Not Safe For Work, as it may be considered obscene by some. It is most certainly not safe for children, or pregnant women, or women who might become pregnant If you dare, after all my cautions, desire to take the risk then proceed to the next page I m sorry. I don t make the news I just report it. By Tom Westdorp Page 3

WTH, continued... By Tom Westdorp I am shaken to report this is not a photograph of a stationary Tri-Glide, no it is actually being driven. It is in actual motion. It did come to a halt a second or two later as the driver stalled the vehicle. Yes, that s true as well. Even after the compulsory how to drive a tricycle video and extensive briefing by the HD staff member seen looking concerned in the center rear of the photo, the driver was unable to exit the parking lot without stalling the tricycle. I m sure you re thinking to yourself, as I did, that even small children can ride tricycles. That s true, we ve all seen them. I can only attribute this to Murphy s Law which predates memes by decades: Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong at the worst possible time. At least he did not put a foot down, or drop it. Once the vehicle was restarted, the operator proceeded to drive around Laughlin for almost 11 miles in full view of the public! Including women and children! Why does no one ever think of the children? If I may be the devil s advocate for a moment, at least we know that the operator has begun his retirement planning. Page 4

Aaarrrgggh! BOLO: Be on the Lookout Member David Chadwick has had his vest stolen! "My house was robbed the other day and one of the missing items was my club vest. One identifying patch is bright green from Roswell, New Mexico with some aliens pictured on it, located on the right back panel. If anyone happens to see my vest, please let me know so I can get it back. There might also be a blue ambassador rope on it. Thanks" Good to know... Past Director A.J. Morgan asked us to pass the following information on to everyone. Matt at LVHD asked that I pass along this information: Garmin has issued a WARNING to Harley Davidson regarding the Zumo 660 & 665. If you typically use OSX (Macintosh) to upgrade your software/firmware and maps, do not upgrade your device to the latest version as there is a high probability that you will "brick" the device (corrupt the boot loader rendering the device useless). This only affects Macintosh OSX. Those using Windows running under Parallels, VMWare or Boot Camp should upgrade using the Windows side of the Mac and the Windows version of Garmin Express. PC s running Windows do not have a problem. Page 5

Road Captain Article By Jim (Cruiser) Jones First, let me introduce myself. My name is Jim (Cruiser) Jones. I am 56 years old and am a Las Vegas native. I have been married to my wife Debby for 34 years and have 2 daughters, Therese and Hayley, and 1 grandson, Jeremy. I joined the HOG Organization in 2008 with my brother David Jones and my brother-in-law, Tony Cortez. We have a houseful including 2 dogs, Harley & Oscar. Adopt a Rescue Pet! I previously enjoyed my stint as an ambassador for 3 years and I am currently enjoying being a Road Captain. Becoming a Road Captain comes with a lot of responsibility. You are responsible for the safety of the members on the ride to and from our destination. Besides training from other Road Captains you are required to take some other classes. CPR & First Aid Class (set up by Road Captains) Advanced motorcycle safety class, which has these requirements: Long pants (Levi s, leather pants) Long-sleeved shirt Over the ankle boots Eyeglasses or eye protection DOT helmet If these requirements are not met you will not be allowed to take the class. For anyone thinking of becoming a Road Captain, it is worth the effort. I was very nervous when I had to lead the ride for my first time. I was calm until Jim (Speedo) said 5 minutes until kickstands up. Then my heart started beating out of my chest and I forgot everything I was supposed to do! I took a deep breath and concentrated on what I had been taught and led the ride. Got everyone there and back safely! HOG Member rides are about fun, friendship, riding on the open road, but first and foremost we must always practice safety! P.S. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE BIKE IN FRONT OF YOU Page 6

Souvenirs This article will kind of piggyback on my last month s article. This one is near and dear to memories as well as the all important pocketbook. I was asked numerous times during my trip if I was buying shirts from all of the Harley Davidson dealers that I was visiting. My response was that not only could I not afford to buy shirts from all of the dealers, I couldn't afford to convert one of my bedrooms into a closet to hold them all. I settled on dealer poker chips mainly because they were the least expensive item in the dealer's stock. I was pretty much travelling on the cheap. I only found two dealers, both in Canada, that did not carry poker chips, although National City CA didn't carry them in April but did have them in November. They are colorful and there are an assortment of frames to put them in, or they would work well as golf ball markers. There are also dealer pins, which are my second favorite. The pins come in a variety of styles, but I really liked the ones from dealers of multiple stores that sell the puzzle pins. The pins look great all by themselves, but when placed together like a jigsaw usually form something memorable about the area. Most of the pins that I collected on my trip were given to me at the dealerships when I told them of my travels. Pins are also multi-functional. They can be stuck right on the vest or in a shadowbox for display on a wall. The problem with the vest is that my run pin vest weighs 60 or 70 pounds. Dip dots are nice little collectables too. They can be stuck anywhere you want them, and some places that you don't want them stuck. I thought about plastering them all over my tour pack until I had a momentary lapse of insanity and decided not to. I did use two of them from the Canadian dealers that didn't sell poker chips. I stuck them on some extra Deadwood poker chips and put them in one of my frames. I also love to collect coffee cups and hats. Just some more ramblings from me to try and help you plan your trip to the next Harley dealer that is close to that great restaurant you heard about, because we... Live to Ride and Ride to Eat. By Chester McQuillen Page 7

Event Photographs A Friendly Reminder! Photographs are such a great way to remember events in our lives. Our SNHOG Event Photo Gallery is also a great way to share the fun we have as a Chapter with friends, family and/or anyone who is skeptical about joining our Chapter. By browsing through our event photos for just a few minutes, anyone is able to quickly realize we ride and have fun all year round! Although Tom & Darlene Greenough and Wendy Smith are our official Chapter Photographers, they are obviously not the only ones taking pictures at our events. If you have photos you would like to submit for the gallery, please email them to photos@snhoglv.com and they ll get added to the gallery. The name and date of the event must be included. Be sure to visit our online Photo Gallery at http://snhoglv.com If you are interested in becoming a Chapter Photographer, please fill out and submit an officer application. PLEASE BE ADVISED Photographing, filming, recording, and videotaping of activities and events will be occurring at our events. By entering the H.O.G. event area, you irrevocably grant permission to the Harley-Davidson Motor Company and its agents to photograph, film, record, and/or videotape you and use (and authorize the use of) your name, image, likeness, voice, and/or biographical or other information in any and all media now known or hereinafter developed in perpetuity for any and all purposes.
