Over the next month, the Upper Hunter Shire Council will be hosting a series of workshops in Murrurundi, Scone and Merriwa to develop a cultural plan to shape Council s investment in arts and culture over the next ten years. Everyone is invited to attend. Organisers want to hear ideas about preserving halls and theatres, hosting workshops and festival and promoting existing cultural events. The workshops are taking place on July 26 and 27, log on to www.upperhunter.nsw.gov.au Manali Bull Sale supporting local foundation A local family who lost a son to suicide has set up a charity to get mental health awareness education into all schools in the Upper Hunter. The Where There s A Will campaign aims to raise money to implement effective support programs, as well as lobby the government to raise awareness about the shortages of counsellors across Australia. Currently, there is one counsellor per 1,030 students. The community response so far has been overwhelming. Close to 100 teachers and parents attended a recent information session, and 16 Upper Hunter schools have since agreed to form a think-tank. Numerous local individuals and organisations have thrown their support behind the initiative, the latest being the MacCallum family of Scone who will auction off a bull to raise money for the cause at their fourth annual Manali Bull Sale on Friday July 29.
