GLEADLESS VALLEY

The Masterplan We have been given funding by central Government to develop a masterplan for Gleadless Valley. A masterplan looks at everything to do with an area including housing, open space, facilities, transport, health and employment and suggests ways to make things better. This is our report from the first phase of consultation. Find out more www.sheffield.gov.uk/gleadlessvalley consultgleadlessvalley@sheffield.gov.uk 0114 273 6396

3. LIFE IN GLEADLESS VALLEY 53% Gleadless Valley is a good place to live I m close to family and friends, have good neighbours and have a nice house Green space Local facilities Woodlands WHAT DO YOU LIKE? Public transport Friendly people Near city centre 15% Gleadless Valley is a bad place to live Noise from neighbours, parking- big issue, litter and unsocial behaviour Litter Off road bikes Anti-social behaviour WHAT DON T YOU LIKE? Drug problems Poor community behaviour Crime levels

4. LIFE IN GLEADLESS VALLEY: What you told us Gleadless Valley has some incredible green space and fantastic views. We are very lucky to have such nice walks and woodland full of wildlife. It is also home to some of the nicest people you could wish to meet. The area still has a lot of scope for improvement. There has been much decline over the last few years I love the community, I love the layout of the estate. I simply love living in Gleadless Valley and wouldn t move anywhere else The reputation Gleadless Valley has stops people from wanting to live here. I've been here since I was 3 years old I'm now 64. Always loved the estate my friends are here I like the location and the views across Sheffield. It's becoming very run down in certain areas, especially Newfield Green It's a lovely place to live but would be better with more things for kids to do I remember when the valley was a showcase for Sheffield because of the unique architectural design. It would be great if we could regain some of this pride.

5. HOUSING Lower house prices in 2017: 84,744 156,746 in Sheffield Slightly lower private rent in 2017: 557 per month 571 in Sheffield More in Gleadless Valley: 50% 25% in Sheffield Social housing 33% 40% Terrace Flat/ Maisonette 22% Semidetached 5% Detached 72% Happy with home 18% Unhappy with home We have great neighbours and sense of community spirit. House is in disrepair Because the house and the area are very peaceful I love my house but hate the area I live in, it's really run down My roots are deep, I was born in this house ASB younger people are being mixed with older more vulnerable residents.

6. MOVING HOUSE Almost 1 in 4 of you are thinking about moving in the next 3 years Garden Bigger house Better area Most would leave Gleadless Valley More people leaving council housing in Gleadless Valley than elsewhere in 2017 14% from GV, 9% Sheffield I want a house More of a private area with better parking and my kids can play out safer Young child and no garden, too many stairs with pram and shopping Bad people playing loud music at all hours of the day and night

7. OPEN SPACE 55% use the green space It's a beautiful place to live, lots of green everywhere, it really lifts my spirit It s very quiet and peaceful ASB You have some concerns Too many off-road bikes using the green spaces as their tracks so not safe for kids to play out Can't use green spaces because of all rubbish what is tipped all over You would like

8. SAFETY People scared of crime, lots of burglaries 1 in 3 of you do not feel safe at night Don t feel very safe especially at night More crime in Gleadless Valley in 2017: 150 incidences per 1,000 people 94 in Sheffield More anti-social behaviour in 2017: 87 incidences per 1,000 people 53 in Sheffield You would like 1. More Police 2. Better lighting 3. CCTV 4. Less anti-social behaviour 5. Fewer off-road bikes 6. Fewer gangs

9. GETTING ABOUT 40% of people don t own a car, compared to 28% in Sheffield Convenient for the city centre and transport links to other towns and cities. No bus to Woodseats anymore, my bank is there Getting to town is easy - 3 buses and 1 tram service But getting elsewhere in the city is difficult Public transport not very reliable, especially bus 56 route. Traffic congestion and speeding is a problem Others said hills/ steep paths make walking difficult Parked cars obstructing the pavements Bankwood Road is awful at school times. Cars coming in every direction, parked anywhere, accident waiting to happen

10. EDUCATION & COMMUNITY % of pupils meeting expected Standard in 2017: % of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in maths and English GCSEs in 2017: Sheffield average Sheffield average 39% 60% 63% 38% 55% 31% 53% are involved in your local community 29% would like to get more involved Community forums and meeting places. Support for local activities e.g. keep fit, swimming, walking. Events to do with natural world. Most activities - baby/toddler groups we go to are in Woodseats/ Meersbrook. Make use of buildings in the area

11. SERVICES & THINGS TO DO 125 people said local shops need improving 81 of you shop locally 207 of you shop outside the area 18% have difficulties accessing the shops Lack of variety of shops. The Coop are expensive and limited in stock. Gleadless Valley lacking in shops, needs a big supermarket, I go to Aldi off St Mary s Gate - get a bus. Easy access for me (to the shops) seen as I drive, but for people who don't it may be difficult. You would like More youth provision More children s provision Youth facilities, sports facilities, cafés, children's play areas, employment/ training facilities.. Improving access to local services needs: Reliable public transport Better promotion More provision

12. GLEADLESS VALLEY PHASE ONE CONSULTATION Emerging Themes
