VEGAS VAIRS APRIL 2018 - PAGE 3 Meeting Minutes: ~ CORSA Chapter #891 Vegas Vairs ~ The following people were in attendance: VEGAS VAIRS CLUB MEETING MINUTES - March 14, 2018 Vic and Ingrid Howard, Paul and Lea Green, Howard Stoner, Harry Ransom, Bruce and Charloleen Haley, Warren and Elaine Halverson, Kevin Britt, Steve and Sallie Wentworth, Stephen Hendricks, Bob Soliday, Marty Katz, Chuck Hanson, Bill Peterson, Jerry Chocek, Stephen Weninger, Bob Helt, Jack and Fusae Wicks, Melvin Jackson, John Charaska, Mike Biron and Mike Wade. President Vic Howard called the meeting to order at 7:02PM. He began asking for someone to serve as Vice President and someone to serve as Secretary. Harry Ransom stated that he had already volunteered to be the Vice President at the last meeting. Stephen Weninger volunteered to be the Secretary. Vic then reviewed the list of officers as follows: President Vic Howard Vice President Harry Ransom Treasurer Paul Green Secretary Stephen Weninger Members in attendance unanimously approved the officers. Paul Green discussed the discontinuation of monthly raffle prizes and the 50/50 drawing. The club is saving $140 per year by no longer having a USPS post office box which well help to offset the loss of the approximately $300 per year the club had made from the 50/50 drawings. The discontinuation of monthly raffle prizes and the 50/50 drawing was approved, seconded and voted for by the majority so there will no longer be monthly drawings. Vic then read an email that Bob Helt had sent to Corsa for publication in the Communique letting the world know that Las Vegas has an active chapter of Corsa and that members are always welcome. In that letter there is also an offer of assistance to help visitors get to meetings. John Charaska offered his to have his phone number published as a contact person, but it was decided that Bob Helt would establish an email account exclusively for contact by visitors. Bob Helt also suggested that the club reimburse Vic for his travel as our way of thanking Vic for volunteering to once again by the President of Vegas Vairs. Vic and Ingrid travel 200 miles round trip to attend meetings. At approximately 18 miles per gallon that equates to roughly 11 gallons of gas per trip calculated at $3.00 per gallon is $33 per month in fuel costs as well as wear and tear to the Howards' vehicle. As a result it was suggested that Vic be reimbursed $50 per month which Vic adamantly refused. When Paul Green suggested that the club could instead pay for the Howards' meals each month, Vic thought that sounded great! That idea was approved, seconded and voted for by the majority of the members in attendance. Vegas Vairs will now pay for the Howards' meals each month beginning with their orders at this meeting on March 14, 2018. The next topic discussed was the spring picnic. It was decided that the picnic will be held on Saturday, April 21 at a park in Henderson near Paul and Lea Green's which was also described as being near Ithaca and Racetrack. Paul will reserve the park for a $20 fee. The Greens will supply the Costco beverages, meats, buns, etc. Everyone else will bring a side dish, salad, or dessert. Melvin Jackson will do the cooking. And someone is bringing horseshoes for tossing! The Wicks' '65 Corsa convertible turbo is back with them after being with Marty for awhile. They came here from Long Island two months ago today. Harry shared the following upcoming events: Saturday, April 7th 2-6PM Car show to benefit Teen Challenge downtown Saturday, April 14th Vegas Valley Mustangs is hosting a car show in Henderson Saturday, March 17 St. Patrick's Day parade in Henderson. (Continued on page 4)

VEGAS VAIRS APRIL 2018 - PAGE 4 Meeting Minutes (Continued): Reid had previously sent an email directing everyone to enter from Van Wagenon so that each vehicle can obtain the green square required to be displayed by each car in order to participate. Participants will assemble at the LDS church. Vegas Vairs is number 50, behind the High Rollers who are number 49 and in front of the Hudson/Studebaker club who are number 51. Harry then shared the NATIONAL AWARD he and Cora recently received! (CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN, HARRY!) Harry submitted photos of his car to the national High Rollers Car Club organization and was chosen as the Best Unmodified Car from 1960-1969! Yay, Harry! What an honor! It was then time for items for sale. The following folks had things for sale: Mike Wade recently bought three late model air dams from a gentleman in CA who had previously offered them for sale. The items have been discontinued for a while, but Mike talked the guy into making three and drove to CA to get them. Mike is going to keep two of them, but is offering the third for sale for $350. Mike also has for sale a set of 14" moonies off his Corv8. The rears have 235-60-15 tires that are six or seven years old, but only have about 50 miles on them. The fronts have no tires. The set of four wheels with moon caps is $200. Mike Biron has engine parts for sale. (I apologize to Mike and everyone else for missing the details.) Marty has set of 185-70-13 black-wall tires for sale. $150 for the set of 4. Harry has two wheels for sale for spares. One is a brand new 14", the other is a 15" with 7000 miles. Both are five lug, chromed all steel wheels. Last but not least, we discussed the meeting place for future meetings. It was decided that the IHOP at 1201 S. Boulder Hwy will be our new meeting place. Folks were pleased with the food, service, prices and accommodations! And just for fun I'd like to point out that Wednesdays are half price day for seniors so pairs of folks 55 and over who each order a beverage get one meal FREE! What a deal! (Shhh...our lovely waitress Rene even let Steve and I play along although we didn't technically qualify. Thank you, Rene!) The meeting adjourned at 7:51PM. Minutes recorded and submitted by Sallie Wentworth WE RE HAVING A SPRING PICNIC!!!!!! Come join your fellow Vegas Vairs members to our annual Spring picnic. Paul Green moved to a new home last year and right across the street from his house is a neighborhood park with grass, barbeque facilities and tables. Parking is available there or at Paul & Lea s home. 351 Cannes St, Henderson, NV 89015 THE DATE FOR OUR PICNIC IS APRIL 21, 2018 STARTING AT 11:00 A.M. and RUNNING TIL 1:00 P.M. ish Lawn chairs are optional for your comfort. The club is providing the hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks, so please bring a side dish of salad, chips and dip or dessert. We will have a fan belt toss (bring yours) and horse shoes for those are active enough to get up before or after eating to their hearts content. We hope some of you will bring your beautiful or not so beautiful Corvair for all to examine. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!!!!!!!! Final Vegas Vairs Dues Reminder If you have not paid your 2018 club dues, this will be the last newsletter you receive. According to Vic s latest email, Paul has not received dues from; MIKE BIRON, STEVE BURK, JOHN CHARASKA, MARTY KATZ, KELLY MAGOWAN, JACK O'SHEA, MIKE WADE, STEVE WENINGER. If you have already sent your dues, please make sure that Paul or Vic are aware. Happy motoring!

VEGAS VAIRS APRIL 2018 - PAGE 5 Tech Articles & Tips: Mid-Winter Garage Projects - From the Preventive Maintenance Series by Mike Dawson If mid-winter has you weary of house projects, football games and terrible TV shows, consider some fun garage projects that help organize your Corvair stuff while just making you feel good. Below are some of the ways I have amused myself; if you have a neat idea, submit it to the VairCor! Specialty Tool Wall Board: Special tools that are used infrequently can hide themselves in the wrong drawer, get left in a different work area and generally cause grief when you know you have them somewhere but can t remember where. A wall board does not encroach on garage space like a cabinet and you can spot a tool quickly as well as notice when one is missing. I used ¾ pre-finished particle board cut to fit vacant wall areas. Particle board needs to have pilot holes for attaching screws when mounting items, but the slick white finish wipes off nicely and it reflects light back onto the floor space. The bottom of my large tool board rests on the floor to help support the weight and it is anchored into the concrete wall. Mounting Fixtures For Specialty Tools: I like to practice wood working techniques and finishes by creating mounting fixtures out of scrap lumber thrown in a box from larger wood projects. It can be fun and challenging coming up with creative ideas that are functional. Using combinations of hardwoods, stains, and various finishes just adds a little extra touch and makes them easy to clean. Air Tool Holders: There are a lot of specialty air tools that make Corvair work easier which can be picked up at swap meets, garage sales and Harbor Freight at reasonable prices. Stuffing them in my bottom tool box drawer was not the answer so I made another wall board similar to the one described above, adding chuck key mounts under each tool (why don t we have a universal chuck key law the government has a myriad of regulations we don t need). Grease Gun Storage: I have two grease guns I use regularly, one is air powered (one handed) and the other manual. Both work great but will occasionally leak a drop or two of oil, especially with synthetic grease. I used scrap lumber and a couple of plastic lids to make vertical storage in an area that had no other use. The plastic lids catch any oil that escapes. Air Compressor Filter: Air filters for my vintage two stage Ingersol-Rand air compressor are $25 on the aftermarket so I used a spare late model air cleaner, a flexible hose from the parts store, two clamps and some minor welding to create a larger remote filter that costs $5 to change (and less frequently).

VEGAS VAIRS APRIL 2018 - PAGE 8 Finish Line: REPORT FROM THE PREZ We had a terrific turnout for our March 14, 2018 meeting! My latest count was 26 but it could have been more with some late arrivals. I assumed the role of President of the club once again and before I get into those things we discussed I want to thank our officers who served these past few years. Mike Wade as President, Kevin Britt as Vice President and Ingrid Howard as Secretary/Treasurer. We appreciate all you have done to help keep this club going. That being said, besides me as President, Harry Ransom volunteered to serve as Vice President and I hope will continue keeping us up to date on car clubs shows, parades and other events going on in Las Vegas and nearby locations. Paul Green is now our Treasurer and Steve Weninger will be our Secretary. Board Members will be Bob Helt, Bob Hanson and Paul Bernardo. Thank you all for stepping up to help keep our club going. My job will be to assist Paul with maintaining the club roster, keeping the club website up to date and I will be updating the by-laws to separate the secretary and treasurer jobs once again. Paul Green made a motion that was seconded to do away with the 50/50 raffle. Bob Helt suggested some sort of compensation for me for travelling from Fort Mohave, AZ and back for the meetings. Rather than some mileage compensation and motion was made by someone to pay for my and Ingrid s meal. Wow! They knew how to get to me through my stomach. It passed and luckily we had both ordered one of the more expensive dinners at IHOP. We will try to be more conservative in the months ahead, we don t want to bankrupt the club! Speaking of IHOP, this was a test of this location on Boulder Highway and it looks like we will be meeting here for the months ahead. Thank you members, this knocks off 20-30 minutes of our travel time each way. We actually got home a little after 10:00 p.m. last night. Bob Helt will work on the message we want to put into the Corsa Communique inviting visitors from other clubs to attend our meetings. Don t forget, or if you weren t at the meeting, we have scheduled a picnic for April 21 st. More details are coming but please put this on your calendars. Also, if you haven t paid your dues, please send them to Paul Green so you will be able to join us and continue receiving your newsletters. I want to also thank Sallie Wentworth for taking the notes for this meeting. She just did it without asking and it was a big help to me as I thought I would have to do it. Again, thanks to all who were able to attend. I hope our upcoming meetings can have this kind of participation in the months to come. Vic Howard, President
