NBYC Members, 2018 was an eventful and memorable year at the New Bern Yacht Club and a special year marking the 25th Anniversary of the club's founding. As we begin the New Year we can expect a full schedule of club activities for boating, socializing and celebrating the yacht club lifestyle. Before moving on, I would like to thank David and Anna Hurst, and all of their most helpful elves, in providing a very special Christmas Day Dinner. The club was festively decorated and everyone, Members and Guests included, enjoyed a special afternoon of excellent dining and holiday celebrations! Your Board of Directors welcomes Sam Bidwell, Treasurer. and Lee Ann Fordyce, Director as we begin to plot our course for the coming year. And, a number of Committees are well underway with new postings on the club calendar. Please remember to refer to the club's website (http://www.newbernyachtclub.com) for updates to the calendar and details regarding boating activities, social events and special announcements. Mark your calendar for the annual Change of Watch celebration to be held on Saturday evening, January 19th at the New Bern Country Club. Please note that your reservations for this formal event must be received by January 9th and all of the details are published in the 'SeaWord and Events' section of the club's website. 2019 Cruising The month of December was a good one. The city finally got their act together and the Flotilla was run with ten boats of which three were from the NBYC. The Crawfords in Ad Libitum, the Irwins in Lucky Girl and the Deckers in Gratitude. Tom Decker went virtually directly from the marina to the hospital to have his knee replaced. Those who didn t take part in or watch the Flotilla were at the Clubhouse for the first Small Boat Flotilla. Dinner was followed by the parade of eight small boats decorated for the Christmas season. Each boat was a winner and received a chit to the ship s store. Everyone had a good time with many musings about making this event annual. A little later in the month was the Wooly Bear cruise to Oriental. The Littekens were the only ones to make it by boat. The others with slip reservations traded them for rooms at the inn. The weather forecast was for heavy rain and wind on Sunday. That was why the slips were traded for rooms, NBYC members being sensible souls. The weather forecast turned out to be spot on delaying the Littekens from coming home until Tuesday. They even had trouble getting to the Bean as Hodges St. was flooded. The annual parade went off without a hitch. NBYC s entry was notable as usual with our miniature Macy s balloons, Elves in full costume, two boats on trailers, one small boat on wheels from the Small Boat Flotilla and plenty of candy to go around. The parade judges deemed NBYC to have the best Elves. The dinner at the Toucan was exceptional as was the service. Looking ahead there will be the annual Cruiser of the Year award dinner February 22. The annual cruise planning meeting to follow on March 7. There are already four cruises on the books all in Oriental; Shakedown April 26-28 with Jim and Patty Smithwick the cruise captains, Croaker Fest July 5-7, Front Door Music Festival October 4-6 and Wooley Bear December 13-15. In addition, the Noyes are contemplating exploring the Northern Chesapeake Bay and welcome anyone who wants to explore with them. Other cruises cancelled by Florence are Southport and Morehead City which are now candidates for the New Year. My New Year wish is for good cruising weather in 2019. -Jack Fleming, Rear Commodore 633-0309 eilcmhor@gmail.com

Shipmates Information Directory Updates If you are aware of an update to the directory, please let Jim Smithwick know. Email is much better than meeting at Lowe s or Harris Teeter, and even better than a phone call, but any form of communication is better than ignoring it. Misplaced your directory? It is also available online at newbernyachclub.com in the Members Only tab. -Jim Smithwick (919) 244-4769 If you know a member who is, or recently has been, sick, had an operation, or is just under the weather, or lost a family member, please contact the Sunshine Committee. -Camille Hoffman 672-1684 camhoff1@gmail.com Treasurer s Report The Treasurer s Report may be viewed on eseaword in the members only section after Board acceptance. Board Meeting Minutes If you would like a copy of the Board Meeting Minutes, it may be obtained (after Board acceptance) by emailing the Secretary or by viewing on eseaword. Ship s Store We are very excited about the happenings for the Ship's Store. A small brochure is being made by New Bern Sporting Goods of items commonly purchased over the past years. A sample of each item will be at the club with color options and prices. There is now a variety of logos from which to choose as well as fonts for embroidering; samples of those will also be available for you to see. As always, any items from the Sporting Goods catalog may be ordered. The newest items to be offered will be belts, flip flops, key fobs, and totes with the New Bern Yacht Club logo. Continued items for purchase from the store: our stainless-steel mug, glassware, Tervis glasses, burgees, and note cards. Please let me know if I can help you find a special item or gift.
