In 2000 the Wild Bird Society of Taipei, a conservation group, was authorized to conduct surveys and research, carry out environmental improvement strategies, provide recreational services and environmental education, and strengthen public relations. The society plays a role in government land use policy. It effectively uses manpower and resources and sets ideal targets. It has built a positive model for privatepublic cooperation. It ensures appropriate protection and management of natural heritage. 6/53

Guandu Nature Park's Impacts polluted, Land filled, alien invasive speciesand Human interference

Water pollution from factory, business and house. Those anthroponomy treated Guandu inhabitants are so serious. Because of Jilong River breakwater system, Guandu lose 30% income water and the drainage is also not good. The wetland deposited silt at 10-30 cm 2 every year.

Alien invasive species include Ampullariidae (apple snail), snakehead murrel, Leersia hexandra, and so on, The human interference include tourists and local inhabitants.

Guandu Nature Park restoration strategies.

Planning and management broken down into different areas (70% for conservation, 30% for education and recreational purposes). Blocking Pollution in Rivers and Water Channels

Monitoring t Projects: annually birds, insect and benthos investigations. Besides, annually water quality inspection projects. Environmental monitoring results are used to plan and adjust microhabitats of various organisms (marshlands, shoals, lakes, rivers, ponds, paddies, forests, grasslands).

Work through the fixed volunteers and temporary enterprises volunteers..

The results of Guandu Nature Park s restoration.

Add 300% watershed area: Water area was increased (from 8ha to 32ha) to boost space for migratory birds. Improve polluted water by DO+100%, BOD- 50%, NH3-N-40%.

1999 2011

Bird species from 80 to 120,260 types of birds have been recorded here (Taiwan has 580). Migratory and transient birds Population from 4000 to 8,000 each year.

Bird Variety, Population 1999: 80 types, 4,000 total 2008: 100 types, 6,000 total 2011: 120 types, 8,500 total

Biodiversity form 450/0.55 km 2 to 750/0.55 km 2 There are more than 600 types of animals here. That includes many endemic and rare species. Six water buffaloes eat 300 kg of grass every day. They assist in the control of alien invasive high-stem grass.
