Surly Big Dummy (Utility Cargo Bike) http://www.surlybikes.com/frames/big_dummy_frame/ After doing much research for my own cargo bike, I decided on the Big Dummy. While doing the research, I ran across many designs for small portable spaces that associated themselves with bicycles and shopping carts. The cargo bike was one of the results of the World Bike Research done in Africa (See World Bike).
World Bike Organization http://worldbike.org/ FACT: Over a billion people worldwide lack adequate access to transport. Most live in rural areas cut off from markets, clinics and schools. The most common way to get from point A to B in these regions is on foot. Walking may be inexpensive, but it's also inefficient when journeys involve long distances, heavy loads or urgency of arrival, as is often the case in rural communities. Increased mobility in these regions puts distant markets, schools and clinics within reach. Without it, development stalls. Rural families with enough money to buy bikes use them the same way we use trucks and school buses. Unfortunately, most bikes that are locally available are ill suited for carrying loads and don't withstand the harsh conditions of their use. Before long, they break down and require repair (which can be costly) or are abandoned. The right kind of bicycle is an ideal low-cost, efficient and sustainable development tool for the rural poor. Bicycling is on average three times faster than walking and significantly less costly than motorcycles and cars. A durable cargo bike can increase carrying capacity five-fold over "headloading," the most common form of rural transport which involves carrying goods on the head. While inexpensive, headloading is inefficient and drives gender inequity.
World Bike Organization http://worldbike.org/ Worldbike was founded ten years ago as an organization focused on designing innovative bicycle prototypes to advance development in poor countries. Since then, our work has led to new bike technologies used in small-scale development programs in Cuba, Mexico, Rwanda, Senegal and Thailand Along the way, Worldbike has published articles on bike design for development, helped establish bike manufacturing and repair shops in developing countries and, most importantly, met and worked with a lot of amazing people and organizations using bicycles for development. Much of our work would have been impossible without them. We're especially proud that two of the first Worldbike cargo bikes are featured in the Smithsonian National Design Museum, "Design for the Other 90%." In 2009, Worldbike evolved its focus from bike design to bike delivery. Today, our goal is to take all that we've learned over the past decade and apply it as the foundation for rural development that is scalable, sustainable, measurable and cost-effective.
Shelter in a Cart - designboom social awareness award 2006 http://www.designboom.com/contest/winner.php?contest_pk=10 The non-profit design competition under the title shelter in a cart has been very successful. 4247 designers and / or organizations from 95 countries have participated. Many more of you deserved to be chosen. The jury made its selections, and from the combination of choices the 5 winner and runnersup were chosen. Homelessness is a complex issue encompassing multiple facets of society. The theme (and the jury decision) caused much controversy and the here presented 130 variations on the theme are already widely discussed across many sites. it is no surprise to us that we are receiving comments suggesting that we are doing something superficial and selfsatisfying, but in answer to that, we say that design is the tool we know best, so we will use it to bring social discussion to our audience. The massive participation rate made it clear that there is a growing awareness of the homeless issue.

name of design : hown design by : panagiotis dramitinos + karaolis alkis + alexandros papageorgiou from Greece Found at Shelter in a Cart - designboom social awareness award 2006 http://www.designboom.com/contest/winner.php?contest_pk=10 designer's own words: The general guideline of the competition is to design a cart that can provide shelter and storage emphasizing that it will still be affordable for production. Therefore, the team decided to concentrate its efforts in improving today s shopping cart rather than coming up with a totally new form. We believe that this approach will keep the cost to a minimum. This way, we are aiming at a cart model that could be produced in the same facilities and with the same methods as with the common shopping cart. We have concentrated on improving the hygiene of the homeless by separating them and their belongings from possibly contaminated recyclable materials. Finally, we resolved some safety issues regarding the control and movement of a heavily loaded cart in an urban environment. The cart itself is a wireframe made from metallic tubing formed and welded in place using traditional welding methods, like TIG, MIG and others, according to the metals selected. The main body could be divided into 3 main areas, the lover part, which is the platform for mounting the wheels, the recyclable materials storage area, which is located in the front of the cart and the clothing storage area, at the back of the cart. The rear wheels are commonly found in a shopping cart and can be steered 360o. The front wheels are larger in diameter and they are usually found in heavy-duty carts.
name of design : hown design by : panagiotis dramitinos + karaolis alkis + alexandros papageorgiou from Greece designer's own words (cont): This type of wheels was selected as they are more durable, and they can withstand the weight of the recyclable materials carried. Secondly, they absorb vibrations and therefore do not produce noise and finally, their large diameter allows them to overlap obstacles like stones, trash and pavement anomalies more easily. The recyclable materials storage area is essentially a parallelogram cage. It consists of fixed sides and moveable left and right panels. These panels can be removed completely or folded to allow easy unloading of the materials or transportation of big items that would not fit otherwise. There is also a third panel inside this cage, which is positioned parallel to the rear side in a variable distance. This panel divides the storage area into two different compartments, so that the homeless can either fill it with one or two types of recyclable materials. The clothing and personal belonging storage area, is protected by a polymer closet. The closet protects valuable or sensitive items against the elements and possible contaminated recyclable materials. The closet closure is itself a foldable bed in the closed position. It consists of an aluminum frame and a polymer waterproof mattress. The bed is connected to a tent made from waterproof cloth and once retracted if forms a complete tent keeping the homeless safe from weather conditions. The tent can be removed during the summer. Above the closet there is a mounting position for a rechargeable flashlight that lights the interior of the tent. The flashlight can also be mounted in any of the panels by a clip. Inside the closet, there is a waterproof sleeve for safe keeping documents such as identity card and medical records. Regarding road safety, the cart is equipped with three reflective surfaces attached at positions that indicate the overall volume of the object and a brake system, that uses bicycle parts. The brake s handle is equipped with a handbrake lever that keeps the cart immobilized once pressed.

Since the retail price of a new manual cargo tricycle is less than 40 USD, this tool is very popular among migrant workers, low-income famlies and elder people who don t drive. The SURVIVOR is composed of one foldable box with shading system installed on a regular tricycle to fulfill the basic needs of a city nomad: self-transportation, storage for private belongings and goods for sales, a simple taxi for local communities, at last, a little privacy and protection from weather at night.

Kamp-Rite Midget Bushtrekka Bicycle Camping Trailer http://store.kamprite.com/catalog/midget-bushtrekka-p-16143.html Take a closer look at the BUSHTREKKA and you will find a product that has been developed specifically for bicycle touring. The trailer frame itself has features that set it apart from any other trailer on the market. Take for example the pivoting wheelset. By utilizing two wheels under each side of the trailer, harnessed to a pivoting rocker frame, the trailer can easily absorb most of the uneven terrain in its environment. Additional to this, each set of wheels operates independently of the other, creating a clutter free underbelly on the trailer. By adjusting the positioning of each pivot frame vertically, the ride height of the unit can be adjusted for bikes from 20" up to 29". Storage is also at a maximum for this trailer. By using every piece of available space, we've created three main storage compartments with over 41 gallons (180 litres) of storage. Easy access at all times, even when set up, ensures you have what you need, when you need it. Our trailer also features fully adjustable leveling jacks to ensure no matter what terrain your setting up on, the unit can be presented to a horizontal position for sleeping comfort.
Kamp-Rite Midget Bushtrekka Bicycle Camping Trailer http://store.kamprite.com/catalog/midget-bushtrekka-p-16143.html Couple the trailer with the remarkable features of the Oversize or Original Tentcot and you are seriously set to travel.
