AP Human Geography Mr. Besser School Year 2018-2019 Summer Assignment Hello! Thank you for signing up for AP Human Geography for next year. The following summer assignment will be collected at the start of class, Monday, August 27 th. This is a 30-point assignment that will count towards your Term 1 practice and application grade. Complete all assignments in full to start off the year with an easy 100%. Please read the assignment in full and follow all directions. Directions: 1. Included is a map of the United States. Label all 50 states and their state capitals. 2. Included are six political maps of different continents. Label all countries in each continent. Territories do not need to be labeled; only label independent countries. 3. Label the following world capitals as well on the appropriate maps (label more if you desire; these are the MINIMUM requirements): a. North America Ottawa, Washington, Mexico City b. South America Brasilia, Lima, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Santiago c. Europe London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, Berlin, Warsaw, Moscow, Kyiv, Amsterdam, Brussels d. Over the course of the summer (between June 15 th and August 20 th ), find one current event news article that takes place in each of the six different continents you map out. With each current event, write a response that includes the following: a. Identify the continent that this article relates to b. Provide a 3-sentence summary of the article c. Identify how the events of the article could impact TWO of the following: i. Population shifts (changes in migration, demographic patterns) ii. Politics iii. Culture iv. Economics & Development d. Identify one similarity or difference between the situation in the article and life in DC. 5. Please include links and/or hard copies to each of your news articles. Remember, a current event comes from a newspaper, news site, or newsmagazine site/paper. Online resource sites such as CIA Factbook are NOT news. If you are having trouble finding articles, look at the following publications listed below; many online sites have a world news section: a. New York Times b. LA Times c. Wall Street Journal d. Washington Post e. Chicago Tribune f. Bloomberg News g. The Economist h. CNN The entire assignment may be handwritten or typed. Again, it is due at the start of class on Monday, August 27 th.
