City of Highland Weekly Report November 19, 2015 YES, YOU CAN RECYCLE USED COOKING OIL It s almost that time of year to gather with family and friends and enjoy a feast. While it may seem harmless, pouring the oil/grease from your deep-fried turkey down the drain can harm wildlife and wreak havoc on local sewage systems. Grease clings to pipes in small particles that latch onto each other, collecting until the mass is large enough to block sewage lines. Used cooking oil/grease is re-used by many companies to make biofuel or biodiesel and is also an additive to many types of dog food. If you have or anticipate having used cooking oil/grease, here are a few tips for proper disposal: 1. Let the used cooking oil/grease cool to a safe handling temperature. 2. Pour it into a container with a lid for safe storage and transportation. 3. Dispose of it properly by taking it to the San Bernardino County Fire Department s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility located at 2824 East W Street, San Bernardino, CA 92415. Monday Friday from 9am to 4pm. Questions? Call (909) 382-5401. For general recycling question or for more information on what items can be dropped off at a household hazardous waste collection facility, please contact the Public Services Division at 909-864-8732 ext. 271. P a g e 5 Administration Emergency Preparedness - BUILD A KIT Having a well-stocked disaster supply kit on hand before a disaster strikes will make anyone s life easier. A disaster may cause everyday necessities like food and clean water to become scarce and hard to come by. You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least three days. A week is preferable. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours or it might take days. A well-stocked disaster supply kit should have the following items: Water one gallon of water per person, per day. Food Canned goods, MRE s, freeze dried. Also include at least one manual can opener. Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Flashlights and extra batteries First aid kit Sanitation Items - Moist towelettes, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, garbage bags and plastic ties, soap/detergent and bleach. Basic tools wrench, pliers, screw drivers, shovel, duct tape, etc. Cash and change A change of clothes, sturdy shoes, and rain protection for each person A sleeping bag and/or extra blankets Other supplies Cups, plates, bowls, utensils, foil Extra batteries Plastic sheeting Copies of important documents (Driver s license, passport, birth certificate, etc) Fire extinguisher Lighters and/or matches Extra medication Cash and credit cards These are just the basics. Everyone s kit will be different because everyone has different needs. If you have an infant, then extra bottles, formula, and diapers would be necessary. Don t forget about your pets. They ll need food and water as well. Remember that a disaster can strike at any time, but the time to get prepared is now. For more information on assembling your disaster supply kit, please visit www.ready.gov.
