Duration: Full-time 2 years Course Code: AD023HA The Associate Degree in Aviation (Professional Pilots) provides accredited training to people looking to develop the skills and experience necessary to become a professional pilot. You will be trained to Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) standards to gain the skills required for a Commercial Pilots Licence. You will also develop the required skills to apply for the Recreational Pilot Licence, the Private Pilot s Licence, and the Air Transport Pilot Licence. This program also offers electives that allow you to obtain either your Multi-Engine Command Instrument Rating or Flight Instructor Rating. Flight training takes place with Hartwig Air at Parafield Airport, which provides a range of airspace terrain and environments to maximise variety in your navigational experience. What you will study Flight instruction includes pre-flight and post-flight briefing time, Private Pilot Licence theory, Commercial Pilot Licence theory, Air Transport Pilot Licence theory, and Instrument Rating theory or Instructor Rating Theory. The program features at least 160 hours of flying, exceeding the minimum CASA requirement of 150 hours. Career Students who successfully complete the program will be able to apply for a CASA Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL) plus either Command Instrument Rating (for multi-engine aircraft) or Flight Instructor Rating (for single-engine aircraft). Additional ratings or endorsements may be necessary for initial employment. With further experience (more than 200 to 300 flight hours) graduates typically find work in multiengine charter operations flying high-performance aircraft, regional airlines, or high-performance general aviation operations such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service or Border Protection Command services. Once you ve accrued more than 1500 hours of flight time you may become eligible for employment as a first officer in major domestic and international airlines. How you will learn The flight training program meets the requirements of the CASA Part 61 Flight Crew Licencing and involves both classroom theory and practical flight training. You will be trained in the following single- and multi-engine aircraft: Cessna 172/172 RG BE55 Beechcraft Baron Flight instruction includes the required pre- and post-flight briefing time, Private Pilot Licence Theory, Commercial Pilot Licence Theory, Air Transport Pilot Licence Theory, and Instrument or Instructor Rating Theory. Classes are taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, online reading, workshop, practical and interactive sessions. You'll have access to online resources through the University s student portal. Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, and practical assignments. After the Commercial Pilot s Licence, you have the option to undertake Instrument or Instructor rating training. You will have access to a twin-engine BE55- Beechcraft Baron and Flight Training Devices including the RedBird FMX full-motion flight simulator. Training and facilities Hartwig Air s Parafield campus provides easy access to airspace, terrain, and urban development, maximising your navigational experiences. Flight training is conducted at Parafield Airport is located 18kms north from the Adelaide CBD, on the Adelaide Plains. To the west we have two wide gulfs to give our students overwater experience. To the east we have the Adelaide Hills with many difficult and inaccessible agricultural strips. To the north we have the Australian Outback with nothing to navigate from apart from the occasional Salt Lake. To the south we have more hills, and the Southern Ocean with changeable weather conditions. The Parafield Airport training environment is ideally situated with access to all types of airspace nearby and variable weather conditions. This enables you to develop the confidence and capability to handle command under a variety of operational conditions. Professional Recognition This program meets all CASA requirements. All flying activities are conducted under Hartwig Air s CASA-approved Air Operator Certificate (AOC). How to Apply Semester 1 All applicants must apply via VTAC. Entry Requirements Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent. Prerequisites Units 3 and 4 A study score of at least 20 in mathematics (any) and a study score of at least 20 in any English (except EAL) or at least 25 in English (EAL). medical practitioner known as a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner. Successful applicants are required to undergo a CASA Class 1 Medical Examination performed by a Funding Assistance This course qualifies for FEE-HELP government loans for eligible students. FEE-HELP can cover up to $102,392 (2018 indexed rate) of program fees over the course of a student s total tertiary education. FEE-HELP is subject to annual government indexation.
