1 A.M.S.A. NEWLETTER ASSATEAGUE MOBILE SPORTFISHERMEN S ASSOCIATION, INC. FROM THE PRESIDENT S DESK BILL JUSTICE I hope at this newsletter writing everyone has had their fill of winter weather and are getting their beach gear ready to the beach very soon. The events for 2014 are starting to get warmed up and if you would look at the balance of the newsletter you will find some of the events that are already scheduled. Hopefully you will find the time to attend some of the events this year. We have many new members in the Board of Directors this year and that is healthy for any organization. Sadly we said good bye to several directors that have served AMSA for years. Their helping hand and dedication to AMSA is/was appreciated. Many new ideas have already flowed through the boardroom and please take the time to make yourself familiar with them in this issue. I have had the opportunity to meet the new superintendent (Debbie Darden), we went through many topics of interests in our one hour meeting. We are in the process of scheduling the next quarterly meeting with her and discuss the opportunity to work through some of the issues as they unfold in the future. I am hoping to see someone from her staff attend our beach cleanup in April as one of the first steps of working together in her young tenure at Assateague Island. As I start my ninth year (counting 1998 & 1999 also) as President of AMSA I have said it over and over and mean it more every time that I say it, it is a privilege to serve such a fine organization and the members that share the same passion of beach access for recreational opportunities. Please ask a friend or family member join AMSA s membership. You can help your organization by getting the membership numbers to increase. By the membership numbers rising it will help AMSA in the future. There is a power in numbers. Bill Justice AMSA President amsapresident@verizon.net Home: (302) 934-8140 Cell: (302) 236-4333 www.keepersofthebeach.com Board of Directors Approves Trial Volunteer Recognition Program As we all know the success of the events AMSA sponsors such as the annual beach clean ups held in March and November, the March of Dimes Walk-a-thon in May, Take-a-Kid Fishing in June and our own Camporee held in August are in many ways measured in success by the level of participation by our own AMSA members. AMSA also recognizes that finding time to volunteer to help with these events can be challenging given the demands of life in general. As an organization we are blessed to have members who do participate and volunteer in these events, but the bottom line is we need more help!! All too often the very spirit of volunteerism which is the heartbeat of our organization is borne by just a few. In order to foster more volunteer support for these events your Board of Directors has approved a pilot volunteer recognition program. Since we are an organization of sports fisherman and beach goers, the rewards for this pilot are related to fishing. Here is how it will work: 1. Volunteer to participate in the organization, execution or conclusion of one or all of the following events by contacting the Committee Chairman: Beach Clean-up, April 12, 2014, Chris Pittas 410-726-2096, Copman0753@hotmail.com; Walk-a-Thon, May 3, 2014, Carey Biscoe 410-713-9815, carey_biscoe@us.aflac.com or Camporee, August 9&10, 2014, Patrick Townsend 302-381-7798, tat.rat.townsend@hotmail.com. 2. For each event where you volunteer to participate and complete the volunteer commitment you will receive one additional ballot for a chance to captain a team for one of the three fishing tournaments sponsored by AMSA (Ocean City October, Little Hatteras Septem ber, Big Hatteras November). Sponsorship includes tournament fees, bait expenses and limited travel expense (location dependent). 3. To earn an additional ballot, the committee chair must sign the back of your AMSA membership card with his/her name and the date of the qualifying volunteer work once the work has been completed. 4. Additional ballots earned will be identified separately from ballots earned by being a member of AMSA. The ballots are not transferable. 5. The drawing for the winners will be held during the May 2014 Board of Directors meeting. In the case of an event (Camporee) held after the May 2014 Board of Directors meeting the member must complete the volunteer commitment or he/she will forfeit the winnings. In this case the tournament will be awarded to the alternant drawn. As a Board of Directors we are excited to offer this pilot program. We are even more excited that with the anticipation of success during this pilot we may be able to offer more programs of this nature in the future, which may include offerings that are of interest to all members such as free items from the Supply Shack or a free spot a Camporee. More to come on that, providing everyone helps us make this pilot a success. So for now, get out early, contact a Committee Chairman and volunteer!! In the mean time if you have any additional questions do not hesitate to contact either John Welch at jmcco597@comcast.net or Patrick Townsend at tat.rat.townsend@hotmail.com or come to an upcoming Board of Directors Meeting which are held the third Wednesday of each month at the AMSA property. Next meeting is March 19, 2014 at 7:30PM. Hope to see you there. Patrick Townsend #630, AMSA Director John Welch #64, AMSA Vice President
