Data Pack G Issued November 2005 Data Sheet Limited life clothing Supplied to RS by PPE however does not specify the standard of protective clothing required beyond that it must be suitable. Introduction Limited-life protective clothing is the safe and costeffective choice of work clothing to choose when: The process is hazardous and the worker may be harmed by contamination to the skin by substances used at work The process must be protected from the worker There is a one-off dirty task where normal work clothes need to be kept clean. Protection offered by Kleenguard coveralls is far greater than traditional textiles, while offering the wearer greater comfort in use than other non-woven garments and heavy duty PVC suits. There are several pieces of legislation which state how and when protective clothing should be worn. COSHH The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations (COSHH) in force since October 1989, cover the assessment, control and monitoring of hazardous substances in the workplace, and list a number of control measures. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is one of these measures, though it is the last resort measure if the hazard cannot be removed in any other way. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Regulations 1992 This recent legislation aims to take COSHH a stage further by: Setting standards for protective equipment across Europe, using the CE mark Categorising the type of protective equipment for use in different environments into complex, simple and intermediate. The RS/ s limited-life clothing falls under these regulations and most is categorised as complex design, because some of the processes which they guard against could be life-threatening (eg. chemical attack). All limited-life clothing must be subject to typeexamination by an approved body. The clothing supplied by RS will carry the appropriate CE mark and have been approved to the specific EN number. The employer must provide garments free of charge to employees which are: appropriate for the risk capable of fitting correctly comfortable to wear carry a CE mark. The employer must also train the wearer on how, when, and what protective clothing must be worn, and ensure that clothing is properly worn by employees. Guidance for use symbols To aid the choice of the correct garment for the job in hand the following system of identification has been used in this data sheet and on garments themselves. Anti-static Low limit Water based liquid BS 5958 BS 6909:1988 splash protection DIN 54345 T1 (108-1010W) (>5mm <100 particles) EN368:1990 (30%H2SO4) (P<1%) Water resistance General protection Chemical splash protection dirt and oil EN368:1990 ISO 5082 (Butan-1-01) (>60N) (P<5%)

The fabric Pioneered by in the USA, this three layered polypropylene fabric protects, whilst allowing body heat and perspiration to evaporate. The two outer layers provide strength, durability and abrasion resistance The microfine middle layer is the filter barrier keeping out hazardous particles but allowing the wearer to breathe. Bonded together, the result is a tough cloth-like fabric providing a high degree of protection with comfort. Strong seams Triple stitch overlock designed seams proved extra strength and barrier properties. Quality silicone free thread. Kleenguard EP coverall EN 368:1990 Premium quality protection against chemical splash and spray Particle protection All Kleenguard fabrics offer a high degree of protection against dust and fibres. In independent tests Kleenguard coveralls outperform traditional woven materials. An important aspect of the level of protection afforded by a garment is the quality of the seam construction. Due to the high barrier properties of the triple stitch overlock designed seams used in the garment, Kleenguard coveralls provide better total protection against dust and liquid contaminants in both woven and unwoven protective clothing. Garment design The Kleenguard coveralls have been designed and developed to offer the wearer the maximum level of protection, comfort and durability in use. Use of the exclusive T-style design and generous sizing gives the user ample manoeuvrability and comfort in use, reducing the risk of tears or split seams and making the garment last longer. T-style design Provides for increased freedom of the upper body and arms, and reduces the strain placed on garment seams during stretching and bending, reduces risk of splitting, extending garment life Elasticated waist Tailors coveralls close to the body for safety and improved fit Elasticated ankle For a more comfortable fit and enclosed protection Elasticated hood Fits close to face to protect head from contamination Quality zip Full length, quality zip with stopper to prevent seam strain. Extended zip flap for greater protection Treated for superior protection against chemical splash and spray, these high performance, premium quality anti-static garments offer a high level of personal protection and user comfort against a wide range of both organic and water based chemicals. Suitable for use against non-toxic chemicals including pesticides and herbicides and in inflammable or explosive environments. This blue garment is both lightweight yet durable and robust for use in extreme engineering environments. Can be used instead of textiles for general protection. Coverall features elasticated hood, waist, ankles and cuffs to limit fluids entering the suit. Can be used instead of textiles for general protection. Will withstand up to 5 days continuous use. Tested in accordance with EN 368:1990 and EN 368 Passes BS 5958 for anti-static properties (10 8-10 10 Ω) Suitable for use against non-toxic chemicals including pesticides and inflammable or explosive environments Repeat use in strenuous wash conditions. 2

Kleenguard coveralls for use with pesticides The use of pesticides is regulated by the COSHH regulations and the Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986. The latter Regulations require protective clothing to be worn when operators use pesticides. Providing suitable additional precautions are taken, such as face shields, protective gloves etc., Kleenguard EP coveralls are an effective method of safeguarding the operator whilst preparing or applying pesticides. The tests carried out, shown in the table below, show when to use EP coveralls to meet the legal requirements for a coverall. EP coveralls are not suitable for use with very toxic substances or when spraying undiluted liquid toxic substances. A DP apron should be worn with any pesticide containing a solvent in its formulation. Low lint test BS6909:1988 >5μm<100 particles For applications where the process needs to be protected, Kleenguard CP coveralls are specifically treated to tie down any surface fibres using a calendering process to minimise linting. All seams on the CP garments are internal to further minimise lint levels. Chemical degradation non-reactive The non-woven material used in Kleenguard coveralls is 100% polypropylene and non-reactive to most common chemicals. Contact for specific information. Garment care Incineration Once garments have become heavily contaminated, final disposal should be via incineration. Note: If hazardous contamination dispose as recommended by relevant codes of practice. When polypropylene fabrics are burned in the presence of adequate oxygen, complete combustion will occur with the formation of carbon dioxide and water. If burned in an atmosphere that is relatively lacking in oxygen, polypropylene will behave in the manner of other petrochemicals by producing carbon monoxide and low molecular weight hydrocarbon compounds. Kleenguard is a registered trade mark of. Wash as Synthetics Do not wash Do not iron Do not machine dry Do not dry clean Do not bleach Light non-hazardous contamination can be removed at the end of each usage by either 1. Hosing down inside and out, then left to dry before re-use or storage or 2. Laundering The garments are washable. Use a warm water wash not exceeding 100 F/40 C. Dry naturally on an air only cycle not exceeding 160 F/70 C. Do not use gas driers as hot spots could cause melting or shrinkage. Ironing is not recommended. Ideally, contaminated protective clothing should not be laundered at home. Note: Treated garments (CP and EP coveralls) should not be washed since anti-static and chemical repellency properties cannot be guaranteed. Coveralls should be inspected before reusing; torn coveralls should be discarded. Autoclaving safe Kleenguard EP coats were autoclaved up to 6 times at 136 C. The material was then tested to determine the extent of degradation. The garments survived very well with no shrinkage or loss of protective qualities.
