FROM THE PRESIDENT A nother full month of Jaguar events and happenings. Thank you Don for all the work you put in to the Economy Run, a great drive with some surprising results - congratulations to the winners. Graeme & Mary gave an interesting and informative talk on their trip to the Jaguar National Rally and their tour of Southern Western Australia with Gary & Kristine, although Graeme was very quiet on what he got up to in Kalgoorlie - are the ladies still the same Graeme? Planning is well under way for our Hunter Region All British Display Day, with preparations for a special display of Daimler 250 V8 s to commemorate their 50th Anniversary. This brings to mind another famous Jaguar anniversary, representing the 60 th anniversary of the first use of modern disc-brakes on a competition car (a C-Type) in the 1952 Mille Miglia 1,000-mile road race. That 1952 Mille Miglia entry represented the first competitive endurance test in Jaguar s development of disc-brakes for eventual widescale road car use. Behind the wheel of that disc-brake equipped C-Type in the 1952 Mille Miglia was Stirling Moss, sat alongside him was Norman Dewis, Jaguar s chief development engineer. Moss said: "The disc-brakes were incredible. "Whereas the Ferrari and Mercedes could all brake once pretty well and then overheat, the Jaguar could repeatedly stop later and faster over and over again, Mille Miglia was the ultimate real world test. It was a joint idea between the team - where could we go, on the road, at racing speeds over a thousand miles - and we said if it can do this, then we will have a production brake that we can make available. In 2012, this remarkable pairing now 82 and 91 years of age respectively will once again take the start of the Mille Miglia in a C-Type. This particular car, XKC 005, is also the same car which, later in 1952, Stirling Moss drove to victory in the Reims grand prix to record the first ever win for a disc-braked car. The Moss/Dewis C-type joined the other five Jaguar Heritage Racing entries to take the start of the event. These included two more C-types, a Mk VII saloon, and a pair of XK 120 models, one a roadster the other a fixed-head example. Bill queried the preferred start time for this event, and the majority agreed to the early 6am start in order to arrive before the massed pipe bands grand entry to the showground Club Plates Registrar: Peter Dwyer advised nothing further to report re Roads & Maritime s intended changes to concessional registration and vehicle certification Events Coordinator: Don Anderson spoke about the Shannons Eastern Creek Classic, where 1900 classic cars are expected. He reported on the Economy Run held on 20 th May. Overall winner was Eddie Wright (X300) with 7.76 l/100km (36.41 mpg). Worst result was Graeme Cox (X300 V12) with 14.04 l/100km (20.11 mpg). Best in early cars was Andrew Haigh (Mark 2) with 10.41 (27.13); best V12 John Floyd (XJR- S) with 12.49 (22.61); best in moderns Eddie Wright as above. Don then gave some details of the upcoming Observation Run on Sat 16 th June. Display Day: John updated the meeting on arrangements so far. 18 Clubs invited, and two model warship clubs. Interest appears high, but too early to assess numbers. 6 The HUB June 2012

John mentioned that at the June meeting, he would be seeking volunteers to assist with marshalling, and allocating jobs for the day. Bill Whitby talked about the Display Day Dinner, and asked for a show of hands re intention to attend (about 10 extras over those already registered). Bill asked that people register with him promptly as numbers are needed for catering. Ian will send out an email reminder. Ian added that the Committee was seeking ideas from members about additional resource materials, books, manuals, CD s, DVD s or tools, that the Club could purchase to improve the availability of items for members to borrow. Ian mentioned that there were still relatively few members cars featured in the Member Cars page of the website, and urged members to provide a photograph and details to Andrew for inclusion. Editor: Nil General Business: Peter Dwyer reported on his unsuccessful research into brake bleeding gear Ruth Calcutt raised concerns about the noisiness of our meeting rooms at Club Macquarie and poor service regarding tea/coffee facilities. Ian said the Committee will look into improvements. Problem Corner: Paul Barnett asked if anyone had access to an offcut of red leather as he needed to repair a sun-damaged seat backrest. Suggested that he get any colour leather and use a red dye. Presentation: Ian introduced Mary & Graeme Cox who gave a presentation and slides from their recent trip to the 2012 National Rally in Perth. After the presentation, Ian offered a vote of thanks on behalf of those present. There was no raffle and the meeting closed at 9.10pm. SOCIAL SECRETARY S REPORT U nfortunately I haven t been able to attend many outings this month. We were away on the weekend of the visit to the Vintage Motor Garage, but I did phone Phil McLeod at lunch time that day, and by all accounts it was a good day. I was able to go to the Toronto Uniting Church Autumn Fair and Jaguar display, where we parked the Jaguars in a prominent position near the church. The fair was a popular event and I think everyone who attended was impressed with the cars. They had craft and food stalls and some quilting on display inside, but I was fascinated by a little old lady who had a table at the entrance and she did postcard paintings with an iron - very clever. On Sunday 20th was the Economy run organised by Don Anderson see the report in this issue. The mid week run was to Terrigal on Wednesday the 23rd, again I wasn t able to go as I was convalescing at home, but it was a beautiful day for a run, unlike last month. Next month on Saturday the 9th June, we have a drive-in movie at the Moonlight Cinema, Stockrington. The movie is The Italian Job. This drive-in has microphone stands for about 24 cars. Have a look at the detaile on the flyer in this issue. The following Saturday the 16th is the observation run, which will commence at the Twin Servos on the F3 at 9:00am, so we need to be there after 8:30 and be ready to go at 9am. We will be running around the Central Coast, and if it is only half as good as what the Don has done on previous runs it will be a fab day. If you are coming along please ring or email me and let me know. The Club s All British Day is on the 28th July and I need to know how many will be going to the Display Day Dinner afterwards at the Newcastle Yacht Club, as there is only a limited number of places available. Even if you can t get to the display day you are welcome to come to the dinner. A couple of events coming up in the next few weeks will also have to have the number of people attending confirmed. These are 7th July - The Highland Games in Aberdeen; 14th July - Christmas in July at Gresford; 19th August - Shannons Eastern Creek Display Day. In particular, the Christmas in July is to be catered, and the dinning staff need to know the numbers. The tickets for the Shannons Eastern Creek Display Day have to be purchased in advance and display places reserved, so we have to know the numbers ASAP. June will be another month with plenty of social events for our members to enjoy. HELP UPGRADE THE CLUB S RESOURCES As noted in the minutes of the May meeting (Page 6-7), The Committee is seeking input from members about additional resources the Club might purchase for members use on a loan basis. FROM THE EDITOR I ve never regarded myself as a greenie, but recently I realised that even the driver of a heavy, old, big-engined Jaguar can do his bit to reduce his carbon footprint. I needed one piece of fillet steak for lunch, so as to leave the other piece from the two-pack for our Club trip to Vintage Motor Garage, where a barbeque was scheduled. Trouble was, the two pieces were stuck fast together like a single block of granite. I whacked them on the kitchen bench, and tried stabbing them with a sharp knife. But they wouldn t budge. Now I m not much of a mechanic, but I know one thing if something won t come apart, you reach for your hammer. So I picked up the solidified meat and proceeded to the workshop. Here, I fixed one end of the steak in the metalwork vice, and gave the protruding piece of beast a robust whack with the claw hammer. Presto! The wanted piece of prime fillet separated cleanly from its hitherto Siamese twin, flew at speed across my bench (perhaps I hit it a little too hard?), ricocheted off the back wall and skated back across the bench and onto the floor, ending under the front of the XJ6. It turns out I had, only minutes before, parked the Jag in the garage, so the heat from the engine started to defrost my lunch. Perfect! And not a calorie of energy was consumed nor an ounce of carbon dioxide emitted! How environmentally friendly is that? I m about as good a cook as I am a mechanic, but my meal turned out to be delicious. Could it be that a dash of Castrol s best, filtered through the inner workings of one of Sir William Lyons finest engines, makes the perfect marinade? Phil McLeod GET YOUR CAR ON OUR WEBSITE! This month s member: Ian Collett, from Tamworth When did you join JDCHR? October 2011 What Jaguar(s) do you currently own? 1998 XK8 - a segment featuring Club members and their cars What was your first Jaguar? 1944 Mark IV (well, almost) When did you get your first Jaguar? I was late on the Jag ownership scene and have to blame numerous Alfa Romeos for this over many years, but I finally took the plunge into the Jag experience last year. Having done a full restoration on the Spider, I hankered after an XKE to restore before sensibly dropping this idea in favour of a fully functional XK8. What is your daily drive? Toyota Prado How did you first get interested in Jaguars? As a boy in the 1950 s I remember a little puzzle / joke that went 10 The HUB June 2012

something like. What s red and comes out of the ground at 120 miles an hour? and the answer was An E Type carrot. That sort of thing started a good feeling about Jags. Much later, about 1960, I had a ride in a friend s Mark V and was impressed with the suicide doors, huge headlights and classy interior. Around 1972 my older brother Phil had a very smooth, white Mark IX with a sunshine roof and I remember it made a lasting impression, especially with the girls. My girlfriend Judy s grandfather had a classy grey 2.4 Mark 1 for many years that looked great and he was still driving it quite a bit too fast at the age of 92. Judy married me but then I got interested in Alfa Romeos and the Jag bug didn t surface again until the XJS 12 s went so well and John Goss s TWR Jag won the James Hardie 1000 at Mt Panorama in 1985. At this time I went very, very close to buying a worn but sound Mark IV for $300, but the mortgage, family, little kids and work combined to trash this great idea. Ahh, hindsight! Fast forward to the late 80 s and into the present and a good mate s obsession with his Jags was slowly seeping into my core. Just about then I d completed restoration of the Spider, and considered jumping ship, so to speak, and doing an XKE as my next project. However when I mentally went through all that would involve, I dropped the idea and the default was to buy a good low km XK8 instead. It may be 14 years old but it s full of gizmos as well as essentials such as A/C, Cruise, auto gearbox and importantly, it has some obvious family resemblance to the XKE as well. It might be a classic itself some day. Any unfulfilled Jaguar wishes? I d like to have another chance at the Mark IV some day and a modernised XKE roadster would always find a place in my garage What kind of driving do you do in your Jaguar(s)? Weekend get-aways, and some around town running as a second car. How much of the work on your Jaguar(s) do you do yourself as opposed to outsourcing? Simple maintenance only such as oil and filters The HUB June 2012 11

What cars or interests appeal to you, other than Jaguars? I m part of a Tamworth group started in 1995 called Tamworth European & British Classic Sorts Car Enthusiasts. We have Jags, Alfas, Lancias, MGs, Triumphs, Morgans, Ferraris, Porsches, Mercedes, etc. We re not a formal club and don t have constitution, monthly meetings, committee, incorporation, insurance etc. We just want to get the cars out driving and have fun and rely on the individual to maintain, insure and drive safely. We have about 30 cars in the group and do a run at least every month, sharing the planning and organisation. The diversity of cars is a key to the group s success. I have a soft spot for classic 105 series Alfa Romeos and drive my 1972 Spider 2000 regularly with our local club. I ride my Suzuki Bandit 1200 with a local group and with the Ulysses Club and I have 3 pedal bikes, one with an 80 cc petrol motor. I try to play golf now and then. Judy and I go off in the caravan occasionally, and I assist Judy s quilting sometimes as chauffer and display stand when photos are taken, and I provide a little help with her bead making equipment. Best driving experience? GRILLED IAN COLLETT (cont d) I m torn between some great drives and many lucky escapes?? My most memorable drive I think was clocking up over 3,000 miles last month taking the Spider to Tasmania for 4 days of great driving with 50 Alfa s in the Tourismo Tasmania, and then 4 more driving both directions of the Great Ocean Road, before driving back to Tamworth through inland Victoria. Great weather, wonderful, winding, almost deserted tarmac, top down motoring and with the rorty Alfa exhaust thrumming musically all the way. One lucky escape was when returning to Tamworth from Port Macquarie with the family on board the V8 Fairlane. As we started up the mountain the engine suddenly died, so I pulled into farmer s driveway, lifted the bonnet and immediately saw the problem. The heater hose had sprung a small leak and luckily sprayed coolant all over the distributor, killing the ignition. It was a quick fix and we kept on home with no problems. 12 The HUB June 2012

Worst driving experience? Where to start?! It was a bad day in about 1965 when the whole exhaust system fell off my FE Holden midway through the Sandy Hollow railway tunnel, which in those days was a part of the gravel road from Muswellbrook to Wellington. It was dark, one lane (or is that track ) wide, no light, no tools apart from a screwdriver and shifter and the muffler and pipe mangled up in the tail-shaft, back axle and leaf springs. Some hours, blood sweat, tears, many expletives and some No.8 fencing wire later, I got it back together, sort of. Luckily there was not much traffic back then and certainly no B Doubles thundering along. Maybe the worst experience might be destroying the engine in the Peugeot 504 late one night in 1986 near Peats ridge on the return to Tamworth from a Sydney wedding, with Judy and 3 little kids on board. I thought the small rattle in the gear lever that had been there forever had just gotten a bit worse, when in fact a burst heater hose had drained the coolant and the rattle was the engine destroying itself. Why Oh why don t manufacturers install better quality heater hose and fit failsafe buzzers or something to all vehicles? MAY MID WEEK RUN TO TERRIGAL J ust what we deserved, after our bad weather for April s Mid Week Run a perfect Autumn day for May. Terrigal had been chosen for the lunchtime spot, famed as it is not only for its fish n chips, but also for its icecreams! Not surprisingly then, a good turnout arrived at Club Macquarie on 23rd May for the start, then headed around the top of the lake and down to Caves Beach a magnificent location for a refreshing cup of morning tea and coffee. But why are there no people there? Oh, I forgot, they re at work the magic of the Mid Week Run! At Caves Beach we met members Peter Smith and Harvey Birtwistle from the Central Coast The starting grid at Club Macquarie Waiting for the off - Angela King, Helen Clare, Ray Bond, Jan & Ian Hissey, Graeme Cox, John King and Mary Cox After soaking up as much of the beautiful view and the lovely sunshine as we considered decent, we got back in the assembled Jaguars and headed south down the coast road to Budgewoi and on to The Entrance and Terrigal. Parking away from the main shops, we bought our delicious fish and chips and found a beaut spot on the promenade to eat, overlooking the beach and the headland. 16 The HUB June 2012 There, we spared a thought for Social Secretary Bill Whitby who has been missing in action recently with a medical issue and was recovering at home after being in hospital for an unscheduled service! MG HUNTER EUROFEST H aving missed a couple of recent Club outings due to family commitments, I was very keen to attend this year s Eurofest, conducted by the MG Club Hunter Region at Lambton Park on 6th May. It has always been a well attended event and gives onlookers a glimpse of cars that come from parts of Europe other than the UK. This year the attendance seemed down a little, perhaps the fact that it was only a week after Steamfest worked against it a case of car show overload? Nevertheless, the MG Club was well organised as usual, even down to the weather a great Autumn day after a cool start. During the day a total of seven JDCHR cars made it to the venue, plus Chris McPherson who provided moral support. MG HUNTER EUROFEST (cont d) It s back! This car appeared in the March 2012 HUB under the heading Spotted. It reappeared at Eurofest, allowing the Editor to meet the owner who, incidentally, had heard that his car had been shown in our magazine, from a fellow enthusiast in Lithgow! But it turns out the car has an interesting history. It is very rare as a factory RHD version of the Iso Grifo, built in Italy for the UK market. At some stage it was shipped to the USA, from where it was purchased, brought to and restored in Australia. But here s the good bit its first owner in the UK, according to the current owner, was famous film star David Niven. Now that s provenance! Other famous Grifo owners include George Harrison, John Lennon, Sonny & Cher (both) and one of the Righteous Brothers. W hilst a contingent of Jaguars wended their way to the Hunter Valley Zoo at Pokolbin/ Cessnock on Saturday March 24th, one lone Jaguar made her way to a more genteel occasion a gathering of gowns at Grace Evangelical Church, Glendale. Here the driver dressed his Mark 2 3.8 in her wedding finery to add a vintage automobile touch to the afternoon for the 95 ladies who arrived to watch a parade of vintage garments from 1900 to 1990. This had been organised by his wife over the previous 6 months. A string quartet provided an interlude of music, which included Edward Elgar s Pomp and Circumstance March. This was much enjoyed by the Mark 2 as it reminded her of her birthplace. Among those present were JDCHR members, Jan Hissey, Pauline Hopkins and Gwyne Hopkins, Pauline s mother. From all accounts the parade was a delight to all present. A PRIOR ENGAGEMENT So convincing was the Jaguar s appearance that 2 ladies who arrived for the parade sat in their car for 10 minutes before the driver approached them and asked if they were OK Well, we came to watch a vintage fashion parade, but we think we are in the wrong place because it appears that there is a wedding here! Being assured that they were in the right place they made their way into the hall to join the others gathered for what proved to be an enjoyable afternoon for all involved. 26 The HUB June 2012 John King and the Mark 2 dressed for the occasion The parade began with a white nightgown from 1901, followed by an exquisite, voile with lace inserts wedding gown from 1905 (see above right). It went on to show some of the more modest and elegant gowns of the early 20th Century. As the parade progressed through the century there were lots of nightwear, daywear, evening and bridal wear fashions that, for some, brought to mind the models of the Jaguar marque, which were produced in each of the decades from the 1930 s on til the 1990 s. Maybe next time a display of one Jaguar from each decade would be the go? Angela King

T he VINTAGE MOTOR GARAGE Vintage Motor Garage is a great place to visit if you appreciate the craftsman s art (or the artisan s craft!). They also have a nice sunny grassed are, with a barbeque, toilet and lots of old car stuff to explore. On Saturday 12th May a sizable group formed up, first at Club Macquarie and with others joining in en route. After a few navigational challenges, we all got there, on Wiseman s Ferry Rd at Central Mangrove. (Note to self: The Navman lady doesn t have a clue where it is!) After making contact with owner Jonathon Houston, we decided to enjoy morning tea and explore the establishment (and there s plenty to explore) before lunch, which would then be followed by a guided tour and commentary. There s no doubt this is a place a fine craftsmanship mechanical work, body repairs everything from building a complete 1966 Mustang fastback We ve arrived! from scratch, to forming up compound curved panels in steel and aluminium, timber frames using coachwood worked up from photographs and old drawings, upholstery and painting. Very little work on their sometimes very rare and valuable cars is outsourced except chrome plating. While all of this was being soaked up, some of the ladies enjoyed a period of relaxed conversation in the sunshine, while they waited for the menfolk to come back and clear up the picnic things for the journey home. JDCHR 2012 ECONOMY RUN A n eager group of Jaguars quickly filled up the available parking at the Shell service station at Heatherbrae on Sunday 16th May for the Club s annual Economy Run. After everyone had filled their tanks to the brim, the fleet of eleven cars set off on the route, expertly mapped out as usual by Events Coordinator Don Anderson. First stop was Tea Gardens where morning tea was scheduled. It also provided an opportunity to marvel at the wide variation amongst our various odometers, which didn t phase Don, who had done his route instructions using GPS distances. Two cars decided to disgrace themselves at Tea Gardens Chris Smith s E Type divested itself of a quantity of its coolant, and Eddie Wright s X300 let some oil loose on top of the engine instead of it staying inside where it belongs. These are certainly great roads for driving, but the deplorable state of most of the surfaces is not kind to old cars and highlights the serious infrastructure problems in our region. Events Coordinator Don Anderson has provided the results of his maths (see Page 39), which reveal some very creditable fuel economy from the wide variety of Jaguars and engines which participated. 2012 NATIONAL RALLY Mary and Graeme Cox were among several JDCHR members who made the trip to Perth for the 2012 Jaguar National Rally in April. They took their Jaguar X300 V12 across and back on the Indian Pacific, meeting up with other Club members while in Perth. Here s Part 1 of Mary s story: - O n Tuesday 18th April Graeme and I drove to Sydney for the overnight stay before getting on the Indian Pacific Wednesday. We boarded the train and enjoyed the trip to Perth arriving on Saturday 21 st April. The X300 going on board Graeme prepares to go on board During the afternoon of Sunday we got a call from Gary and Kris to say they were at the Travelodge so we caught the bus to where they were and had a while with them planning the next few days. Monday 23 rd April We caught the yellow cat then the red cat to the ferry terminal where we met up with Gary and Kris and boarded the cruise ship down the Swan River to Fremantle. Graeme Kris and Gary before boarding the Ferry to Fremantle On arrival we caught the tram and the boys stopped at the Prison and did a tour while Kris and I stayed aboard and finished the tour of the town at the Mall. We had lunch and walked around and found a chocolate shop and they were nice. Fremantle Prison We saw the boys on the tram and they got off at the mall and had lunch and then waited for the tram to come back at the Town Hall to take us back to the Terminal. At 3.45pm we caught the ferry back to Perth taking in the beautiful homes along the way and the dolphins. After reaching Perth it was time to catch the cat for the motel. At Gary and Kris s stop we said farewell till tomorrow. The HUB June 2012 41

Tuesday 24 th April 2012 NATIONAL RALLY (cont d) We caught a bus organized by the tour at 7.20am for the ride to the jetty where we met up again and boarded the ferry to Rottenest Island. Going back down the river, past the homes and being commentated all the way so we knew what we were passing. Absolutely great trip. On arrival we walked to the train stop where we were taken on a tour of Guns and Tunnel, which was interesting to hear about World War II. We then caught the train back to its station and walked up to a mall where there were takeaways. After lunch we then walked around till we could board the ferry back to Perth. When we got on it was packed to the rafters till we arrived Fremantle and most got off and then on to Perth arriving at 5.30pm. On arrival the bus was waiting to take us back to our motel. Another great day and the weather was great too. Wednesday 25 th April Being Anzac Day there were no cats running so after breakfast we decided to walk into the mall up Wellington Street and turning into William Street and onto the corner of George Terrace where the march was in process. It was huge, so many marchers and bands, absolutely brilliant and the crowds there to watch were also huge. I rang Kris to let them know where we were so they came and met us. All the cafes were opened so we went for coffee and strolled around the mall and stayed on for lunch. Rally HQ Como Thursday 26 th April 42 The HUB June 2012 We walked down to the Cathedral which was just beautiful inside and out and walked back to their motel for a break. Afterwards we walked back down to watch some of the buskers. About 3.00pm we decided to walk back to our motel so we said farewell till Saturday as we were going to Rally Headquarters. Up early to pack our belongings for our move to Rally Headquarters at Como over the other side of the River. We drove past Kings Park which was lovely and huge, then onto the freeway to South Perth where we found a car wash to have the car cleaned for Saturday. The guys washed it and painted the tyres for us for $19.00 which was good value, and Graeme didn t have to do it. We then drove around to the motel and booked in. When settled we walked across the freeway which was huge and the train track in the middle, along the river. It was lovely, and back to the motel. We got a taxi to Garden City (shopping mall) where we had lunch and look around for a couple of hours then caught the taxi back to the motel. After a late breakfast we went downstairs to get our registration and goodies, didn t see anyone we knew so went back to our room. After a while Graeme

wanted to go over the car and make sure it was clean so after getting out of the lift we ran into Tony Herald in the foyer. He was with Bryan White so we were introduced and had a good chat with Tony. While relaxing in our room we saw Steve Bloomfield arrive so sang out hello from our balcony. He arrived with his brother John and they were settling in. Saturday 28 th April The weather doesn t look good today. Up early to meet the others for the drive to the Display venue. We gathered in the street round the corner from the motel and drove from Como and Victoria Park over the Causeway to the Supreme Court Gardens. On arrival there were cars already lined up on display which was very good with about 250 cars in total turning up. Of course cars were from WA, SA, Victoria, Canberra, Queensland, not sure of Tasmania, and the important one there was ours. We had a few sprinkles to dampen the atmosphere but then it was just overcast which wasn t too bad. We had a good time catching up with our members Kris and Gary Flack, Janet and David Merryweather, Steve Bloomfield, John McAlpine, Tony and Karen Herald. We had lunch together across the road at the Lucky Shag Bar. Inset: Steve Bloomfield Afterwards David and Janet were making their way back to their van in which they were holidaying around Australia. They arrived in Perth in time for the Rally. A few days earlier David got word his mother was ill and while flying home they heard she had passed away. Our condolences to him and Janet. The HUB June 2012 43

Unfortunately about 2.30pm it started to rain a little, lightly at first, then it got heavier so we decided to leave the park. Thankfully the rain held off long enough for the judging. We arrived back at the motel in the pouring rain. We didn t go to the Dinner but members from other clubs told us on the train that they got wet getting into the bus and also at the Zoo which was disappointing for the organizers. Sunday 29 th April Up early to pack the car and depart the motel at 9.00am. I set the GPS but it was taking us on a different highway to where we wanted to go for Hyden so I did a lot of map reading to get us back on track. We got to a McDonalds at Maddington so I rang Kris to see where they were and they were still coming. Within 5 minutes they found us and by this time it was a coffee break and breakfast for them. We were on the road at 10.10am and of course roadworks and water truck but it wasn t too bad. We drove through Brookton which was very dry. It had rained heavily in a couple of places but then the sun came out. We went past a side road which was named Sudholz 57klm before Corrigan. Not sure if there is any significance for me (being a Kris and Mary at Wave Rock Holz descendant). At 7klms before Corrigan, we passed a Dog Cemetery which was unusual as I hadn t seen one before. Graeme was going a bit fast for a photo. We arrived at Corrigan where we had lunch at a roadhouse departing at 1.20pm. I took a photo of tin man at Kondinin and Golden Fleece Restaurant which is now very rare. We arrived at Hyden Wave Rock at 2.30pm for a walk around the Rock which was great before going back to the café for a drink and sit on the verandah watching the swans swim around. We then drove back in to Hyden and stopped at the Motel for the night. There was a hotel attached where we had drinks and then dinner which we had to cook our own meat on the BBQ but it was lovely. Monday 30 th April 2012 NATIONAL RALLY (cont d) Fuelled up at Liberty Service Station and ready to leave at 8.50am for the drive to Albany. We stopped along the way to take photos of Lake Grace which is just a salt lake. We stopped at Roadhouse for coffee. Back on the road again and drove past South Lake Grace then onto Pingroup, a neat little town then onto Border and Stirling Range. We arrived in Albany at 1.15pm and had lunch at Whale World Albany McDonalds. We then drove through the main street to the Information Centre to see where there was a motel near the CBD. They booked a room for us at the Dog Rock Motel. After going round in circles in the car park we then drove to Whale World for a 3.00pm tour 44 The HUB June 2012

which we made just in time. The guide was really good explaining how things were done as far as catching and killing the whales. What a hard life those workers had. We then returned to the motel and Gary walked to find the Chinese Restaurant which was about a kilometer away but he said he didn t mind. He drove us back for dinner before retiring for the night. Tuesday 1 st May Departed motel at 9.15am and drove towards the Port for a sightsee then took the scenic drive to Denmark, seen black cows with white bellies in paddock (not sure what they were) and then back on the main highway then past the Denmark Shire Council which was a large building set on big block. A very pretty and green drive. We arrived at the Valley of the Giants at 10.55am. It was a great walk to the top and not real scary. Kris and I sat in a pretend car which was in the bottom of a tree. Back on the road again at 11.40am passing the Nornalup Inlet Bridge and Walpole. The vineyards on way to Pemberton where we arrived at 1.15pm. We drove to the Tram to get tickets for the ride then the boys went to get us some lunch. We departed at 2.00pm and went past the biggest timber yard and stopping at sidings where we could get off and look around. The trip was very interesting and the guide explained different trees we were passing as well as any landmarks. We arrived back at the station around 4.00pm to see the Jaguar members who were on the Post Rally Tour board the next train. The Cox X300 V12 and a Mark IV at the Rally Mary looking nervous, with Gary and Kris at the Valley of the Giants We then went looking for accommodation which we got the last 2 rooms at a motel. After checking in Kris and Gary took a drive to see where we could have dinner and thought the pub would be good. It turned out the Post Rally tour was staying at the pub but having dinner at the motel where we were staying. We had dinner at the pub which was very enjoyable then drove back to the motel for the night. This National Rally story will be continued next month... The HUB June 2012 45

It begins with a street parade that features 12 pipe bands, many clan societies and various floats. The procession moves from the main street into Jefferson Park for the opening of the games. The day encompasses pipe band displays, tartan warriors (strongmen), tug - o - war, egg throwing, kilted dash, three legged race, highland dress competitions, highland and Scottish country dancing. The day concludes with a ceilidh in the evening featuring a traditional Haggis Address, Scottish music and dancing for all. A snail buys a fast new car... 3.8 S There was once a snail who was sick and tired of his reputation for being so slow. He decided to get some classy fast wheels to make up the difference. After shopping around a while, he decided that the Jaguar Mark 2 was the car to get. So the snail went to the classic Jaguar dealer and said he wanted to buy a Mark 2, but then the salesman shows him a beautiful 3.8 S Type. The snail was instantly smitten, and decided to buy the S. The dealer asks, "Why the S Type?" The snail replies, "'S' stands for snail. I want everybody who sees me roaring past to know who's driving." The dealer didn t argue, in fact he was thrilled at the unique opportunity to sell a car to a very unique snail. So the snail drove out in his new car and spent the rest of his days roaring happily down the highway at top speed. And whenever anyone would see him zooming by, they'd say, "Wow! Look at that S car go!" Which carries more favourable interest rates a car loan or a home improvement plan? My Winnebago needs a new transmission! I felt sad that I didn t have an in-dash GPS, until I saw a guy who didn t have a mobile phone! A JAGUAR DRIVER S TEST on a Club run (male driving, female tester): While driving around the curves on a hill with a steep drop: Set the sat nav, Text on the phone, Use the walkie talkie, Rouse on your partner for not being able to use these things without instruction, and Take photos out of the window, backwards behind you, of other club members trying to do the same. Editor s note: There is no prize for identifying the JDCHR member who submitted this piece! There was once a young man who, in his youth, wanted to become a great writer. When asked to define "Great" he said, "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!"
