(I was not sitting with Ross and Bert, but I am sure it is safe to report that they didn t partake of any!), it was time to start the meeting. President Jill started by tapping a glass with the gavel (I gather the bell and the cards had not yet made it back, safe and sound, from their adventure to West Thunder Community Centre.) and her usual insightful words of wisdom. We were happy to see that Darren Roberts had once again accompanied Gordie to the meeting. After the meeting, Darren met with Craig, Chair of the Membership Committee to have a chat about Rotary. It was nice to see that members are slowly drifting back, from being away. Last week, Dave Murray and Jerry Williams were back from sunnier (or at least in most years) climes looking hail and hearty. This week it was Robert Moore; back from Florida. Now we are just waiting for Brian and Jenny to return. The Joint District Conference As usual, esteemed District Governor Ajoy had some good news. He knew a man, who knew a man, who had some more rooms at the Delta for $139 per night. Armed with that information Irene signed up for the conference. DG Ajoy will get us all there yet, but I am left wondering who will be in Thunder Bay to sell tickets that weekend? Who s Your Famer? Jerry introduced Matthew Baughman, an organic farmer who runs a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm in the Whitefish River valley, south of Thunder Bay. Matt, and his wife April, run Boreal Edge Farm as a CSA farm where 100 local families buy shares of the farm s produce, which for 14 weeks in a year, is brought to a central location for pick-up. Each week, in the growing season, a member receives a box of 40 varieties of inseason vegetables. http://www.rotary5550conference.org/ The Push is On The next few days will be very busy trying to get all the tickets sold before 4:30 pm Sunday, into the drum before the first early bird. They must have been completely processed and in Peter s office by 8 o clock Wednesday morning. Fiona will need all the help she can get with data entry and checking and verifying on Monday and Tuesday night. The concept of community supported agriculture started in Japan and very quickly spread through Europe and over to North America. It is good for the local ecosystem, the local economy and small farms as the risk of farming is accepted by the group. The Fun Continued As Ross went up to the podium to act as finemaster a murmur went around the room. Boris was sure that Ross was going to centre out a quit a few people, as Boris felt we had been picking on Ross in recent weeks. As it turned out we all had to pay if we hadn t had the liquid that Ross had had for dinner. Sharon lead us in a hearty rendition of Smile- Sing a Song while many of us remembered Al Hope, whose favorite song it was. What a fine looking bunch of guys we are! member, he wants to sell tickets and is willing to work shifts at the house. Thanks Al, you know you are welcome back any time. Ted was being encouraged to come out to the house to sell. He said he couldn t because his leg hurt, but Terry thought that might bring out some people who would buy sympathy tickets. Announcements Jill had a list of upbeat announcements: First she reminded us that GSE Team Japan, would be coming this Saturday evening at 9:00 pm. Pleas go out to the airport to welcome them. (Their full schedule is attached to the end of the newsletter). Next she read a heartfelt thank you letter from Lindsay, a student who received our $4,000 Northern Ontario School of Medicine Bursary given to a student enrolled at the Thunder Bay campus who indicates an interest in practicing medicine in Northwestern Ontario. The House Lottery Bob Hookham says that we are 60% sold out and doing well, but we could do better; indicating that were are ahead of last year but not doing quite as well previous years. This coming weekend is expected to be a busy one, as it is the last chance to buy a ticket before the early birds start. The advertising and the remotes will be geared to that message. Walter was looking for more volunteers as we need all three tables manned on each shift this weekend. There was word that even Al Wrightsell can t resist the call of our House Lottery. Although no longer a Following that was an invitation to attend the Red Shield Fund-raising Dinner. If you wish to go, contact Jill Then there was a lengthy letter from a small regional clinic in India, of which Jill just read a small part, that expressed thanks for the sweet water wells we funded and letting us know how much of a difference they had made in many people s lives. Finally, Jill let us know that Central Lakes Rotary Club had has helped to sponsor our club in Sierra Leone by giving us US$500. There was some laughter around the room at the irony that US and Canadian dollars had reached par on that day. 3 P a g e
Back to our Regularly Scheduled Program As K.S. worked his way up to the podium for lighter side, Ross warned him not to start laughing until after he had told the joke. As usual K.S. s jokes were most amusing, but surprisingly clean but he couldn t resist just one little giggle as he started the jokes. As stated earlier there were no cards for the fifty-fifty draw, so there was a special secret number to be guessed in order to win the $95.50 in the pot. This was such a unique way to run the draw, that this scribe forgot whose ticket was drawn, but whoever it was didn t guess the secret number. If the winner lets me know who they are, I will publish their name next week. Coming Up..
