We were founded in 1934 by Mrs. Charlotte Oakey, headmistress of Bathampton School. Mrs. Oakey had been a member of the English Folk Dance Society s prestigious Demonstration Team and she was keen to teach traditional dancing to her pupils. In time, Mrs. Oakey s Boys, as we were known, grew into the Bathampton Morris Men. Thursday May 7th Thursday May 7th Great Elm 7:30pm The Green Trudoxhill 8:15pm The White Hart East Woodlands 9pm The Horse & Groom Morris Dancing Morris dancing is one of the oldest surviving English customs, stemming from male ritual dances in pre-christian festivals. Morris dancing was traditionally passed on from father to son. It is referred to in Shakespeare s plays and in earlier works dating back to the 14th century, but the dances were not recorded until near the end of the Victorian era, most notably by Cecil Sharp. Ironically, due to a recent media scare-story that morris dancing will shortly die out completely, more people are joining morris teams than ever before, to ensure that morris will continue as one of the greatest icons of our heritage. A measure of her enthusiasm is that she was prepared to walk the round trip of 8 miles to attend classes at the Bath Branch of the EFDS. She later became a member of the Branch s demonstration team. From the beginning the Morris dance was of special interest to her as an activity away from the life of festivals and competitions. However, festivals and exhibitions still played a great part in the life of her teams at Corston and Bathamption for many years. She died as the result of an automobile accident at Coventry aged 73 in 1963.
