Beside the Sea Homemade Gourmet Chocolate has been in busy for three years but has only recently been recognized for the speciality that it offers. This business started very small without signage and paving and is now growing and taking up more space each and every year. Owner and operator, Stacey MacNeil, returned to Cape Breton following a career in Ontario and wanted to do something based on her love of creativity. She fondly remembered her days in Girl Guides where she had done chocolate molding and wanted to pursue this venture as her own. Stacey is self-taught and through sheer will and determination has grown to become well known and recog- nized in the area. Speaking from personal experience I can tell you that once you have tasted these amazing chocolates you will not be able to help but to go back for more. There are a large variety of choices when you enter the shop from chocolate covered cookies, baskets and boxed sets which have become very popular. There is something available for every occasion. Although the shop is seasonal, Stacey is always willing to open so that someone can obtain a last minute gift or obtain their favourite chocolates. She can be contacted by calling 794-1418. This is happy news to us anglers who will be able to fish brown trout year around. The bag limit will be a total of two fish of either species during the period from Oct. 1 to March 31. Brown trout are generally found in the same habitats as brook trout but due to their larger size, and their ability to tolerate higher water temperatures, they often displace brook trout from their range. Brown trout tend to seek out deep holes under banks and overhanging trees or anywhere there is some cover. These fish lie low during the day and become active at night. JIM CUDDY Skyscraper Soul (Warner) This album sneaked by me when it was released some months ago and that s unusual for me because I have written a review for every Jim Cuddy, Greg Keelor and Blue Rodeo album since day one. I guess no one s perfect, so better late than never. What did however bring it to my attention was when I heard the song Everyone Watched the Wedding on a local radio station. It immediately grabbed be. It s a testament to Jim s songwriting skills how he can flawlessly blend a song s message about love and concern for family members, and the trials of just getting by day to day, to that of the royal wedding. This song is truly amazing, but that s no surprise as I believe Jim Cuddy is one of Canada s best songwriters, if not the best. I was actually a bit surprised to see the slick cover photo on this CD, here s what Jim had to say about that; Honestly, I was reluctant to wear a suit and play a character, but Sally (Davies-the photographer) had a vision and convinced me to try it. She wanted me to look elegant and exhausted. For me, that fit in with the story of the record that the city can beat you down. The album s namesake song, Skyscraper Soul, talks of just that. Looking closer at some of the other songs, How in by Paul Power the World is a hauntingly beautiful goodbye until we see each other again moment; Ready to Fall and Banks of the 49 are similar in style and pacing. Both are really nice numbers. The two short musical bridges on the album are interesting too; City Birds and Don t Know That Much may have been influenced by Jim s efforts at scoring a short film made by his wife, Rena. They both suggest cinematic visions. Jim s slower numbers are beautiful, but he also knows how to kick it up too; Regular Days, Still Want You and Watch Yourself Go Down are slices of pure folk/country rock, with an emphasis on the rock. With no pun intended, Waters Running High is the high mark on the album, with its bluesy, New Orleans style sound, including old-school keyboards and horns, its vibe is infectious. This is Jim Cuddy s third solo album and his tradition of writing, recording and delivering top quality songs continues with this release. It s very good. RESTAUARANT REVIEW Black Spoon Bistro I had lunch this week at the Black Spoon Bistro and it was a delightful dining adventure. I had the Chipolte Chicken Paninni and a bowl of Sea Food Chowder. The restaurant is nicely furnished and it s an inviting atmosphere to have your lunch or dinner. The server was prompt and smiled and took my order with a minimum of fuss and my food came within 5 minutes. The sandwich was absolutley delicious but what really tickled my fancy was the bowl of seafood chowder. It was very creamy and had many huge chunks of lobster, scallops, shrimp and 5 mussels on the shell were included along with the rest of the vegetables. It was one of the tastiest seafood chowders I had in a long, long time. It reminded me of my grandmother s chowder and she was from Cheticamp and made very hearty soups and chowders. And then when I was leaving, I received chocolate coated peppermint stick. It s one of the many small attention to details that makes this restaurant a good choice. I highly recommend this establishment for your next meal or lunch. PAGE 7 Easter Bunny Hop The Easter Bunny would like to invite everyone to join him for a 20 minute walk with refreshments afterward. TAX TIPS FOR PEOPLE OVER 50 - Courtesy of H &R Block -. Income split and save: Seniors are allowed to split up to half of their eligible pension income with a spouse or common-law partner. Income splitting allows some seniors to enjoy a significant tax reduction. In the situation where the lower-income spouse has very little income, the tax savings are substantial.. Get your benefits: Any senior receiving Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) through Old Age Security should file on time to ensure their benefits continue uninterrupted.. Transfer amounts: If your spouse is unable to completely offset his or her age amount, pension income and disability amount against tax payable, he or she may transfer the unused portion to your return.. Caregiver amount: If you live with your children and you are over 65, they may be able to claim a caregiver amount for you if your income is less than $18,906.. Foreign pension income: Pensions from foreign countries may be subject to special tax treatment under the terms of a tax treaty. Always check with a tax professional to find out if the pension you receive from a foreign source is taxable in Canada.. Split your CPP and save: You may be able to split part of your CPP retirement benefits with your spouse depending on how long you lived together when you were contributing to the plan. This is an advantage if one senior is in a higher tax bracket than the other. However, to do so, you must apply to Human Resources & Social Development Canada using Form ISP- 1002. It cannot be done at the time of tax preparation.. Medical expenses can add up: If you purchase medical insurance for a trip or wintering in another country, it is considered a medical expense. Medical expenses are calculated based on income so the lower income spouse should claim them And if you have to travel to obtain medical treatment that was not available where you live, you may be able to claim the cost of transportation, meals and accommodation. PAGE 10 THE Smile APRIL IS VOLUNTEER MONTH April is Volunteer Month and it s a time when we should stp and pay tribute to the legion of volunteers that have worked tirelessly over the past year for your organization. The CBRM Recreation Dept. does a good job of honoring the many volunteers who help each year and Northside This Week is also taking a positive step by accepting your own club s nominations for volunteers who served you and it s your oportunity to give a little praise to them for their efforts. Let me first nominate two Northside This Week volunteers, Paul Power and Kim Rideout who take the time each week to contribute to the success and reading of Northside Thsi Week. Thank you for your tireless efforts to have keep the people of the Northside informed about music and various commuity groups and organizations and activities. I also received an email nominating the entire ladies Auxiliary of the Sydney Mines Legion who have worked hard this past year at various functions. I have been at a few of those fuctions and I can testify that the ladies do a fine job of hosting an event. Thank you for taking the time to do a job well and serve your community! Another group Id like to single out is the Northside Garden Club who I see each Spring and Summer working to make the Northside a molre beautiful place to live and visit. Your contribution is appreciated by many. If you have a group or an individual you d like to see get a little recognition, email us - thisweek@kleeradio.com and we ll see that it gets into our next edition. This is your opportunity to send a little praise to your favorite club or individual. In February 2009 the name was officially changed to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Breton. Bowling for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cape Breton This week I wanted to do a brief profile on a wonderful event that I attended on Wednesday, March 28th at Strand Bowling Alley in Sydney Mines. This is event was a fundraiser for Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Cape Breton and was in every sense of the word a great success. It was wonderful to see so many businesses and community organizations working together to help raise money for such a very worthwhile cause. I have to say as one of the participants in this event, a great time was had by all. Now I will admit to a little friendly joking among team mates but that just helped to make the afternoon all that more fun. The theme for the day was disco and it was a wonderful atmosphere with the decorations, music and the wonderful people from the organization makes this a popular and successful fundraiser each year. This organization began This organization helps young people through Cape Breton and certainly deserves the recognition that it receives and any assistance they are able to obtain. Approximately 85% of their operating budget comes through fundraising campaigns. Another fundraising campaign that is always very popular is their Big Big Draw tickets. They are only $5.00 each and each month there is a chance to win a great prize. I would like to thank the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cape Breton for a job well done not only with regard to the fundraiser today but also for all of your caring and dedication to the community!!!! Curtis liked to follow the UFC on TV and he favorite hockey team is the Toronto Maple Leafs. Maybe we ll see him at the Leafs /Candiens game at the North Sydney Fire Hall on April 7th when the Canadiens will once again prove the best team! Curtis mentioned that working at Wayn & Sons is satisfying as it is a good working environment. Like myself, Curtis is wating for the sport fishing season to open on April 1st. Maybe we ll see him around the Northside and we can tell each other some fishing tall tales. When I asked owner Wayne MacDonald about Curtis he replied, If all employees had the work ethic that Curtis has, the work force would be a better place for both owner and employee alike. That s high praise from an employer and Curtis deserves a round of applause. Say hello to him the next time you bring in your power equipment for servicing at Wayne & Sons.
