New Year, New You, New Staff Association! We hope that, like us at the Staff Association, you came back to the university refreshed from the Christmas break, and with many more ideas for new resolutions than you could possibly accommodate in one single year! This might just about be the most exciting time of the year (we ll grant you that doesn t take into account the ever-stretching wait until January s pay day!) But financial considerations aside, plans for the year ahead start to take shape and the blank canvas for 2014 starts to take on some colour. If like us, you have made a commitment to being more active, then you might want to try one of the activities we offer? Why not give yourself some much deserved time away from your computer screen at lunchtime? The SA walking group meets every Monday at 1pm outside the Registry to treat themselves to a revitalising walk around UEA and the Broads. And what s more, it s completely free! For more details, contact Beverley Youngman at b.youngman@uea.ac.uk. If you are interested in trying a new sport, the SA runs two friendly badminton groups which meet at the SportsPark from 5pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. And with our 1 fee and turn up and leave as you want policy, it will be hard to find a more convenient way of getting some exercise! Our Tuesday group welcomes players of all abilities, whilst our Friday group is best suited to those at an intermediate to advanced level. For more information, contact me at b.poubeau@uea.ac.uk about our Tuesday group or Gill Price at gill.price@uea.ac.uk for the Friday sessions. We are also putting the finishing touches to a brand new Tennis club so be sure to check our webpages for more details soon! And if your New Year s resolutions involve dedicating more time to yourself, what better of spending your newly acquired me time than by getting into a good book? Our SA Book Swap meets on the first Wednesday of the month. To find out more, see page 4. As you may have noticed, in line with the New Year, we have given SAM a fresh new look (we hope you like it!) and will be giving the website an overhaul too. We all have plenty of exciting ideas for 2014 and have recently welcomed a number of new members to the Exec Team and Social Committee who are all enthusiastic about starting new things - but we would love to hear from you too! The Staff Association is run by UEA Staff for UEA Staff, so don t hesitate to contact us if you have any ideas for trips, discounts, or even if you would like to run your own sports club but don t know where to start! With best wishes for 2014 from all of us at the Staff Association, we look forward to seeing you soon! Beatrice Poubeau and Sarah Morris, SAM Editors UEA Staff Association Magazine Winter 2014 1
