BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB Undiscovered Greek Islands: Aboard Sea Cloud Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Please join me this summer aboard the incomparable Sea Cloud, to discover ancient marvels of myth and antiquity in the Cyclades and the Peloponnese. Explore the enchanting Greek Isles as our privately chartered vessel slips into small harbors and shallow bays to visit Mycenae, Epidaurus, and other sites rich with mythological and historical resonances. From Piraeus, cross the Aegean to call at Delos, mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Roam its extensive ruins, then refresh with an espresso or apéritif on nearby Mykonos. Step ashore on Naxos for a tour of its excellent antiquities museum, where we will see the Cycladic marble figures that had such a significant influence on Picasso and other modern artists. On the lesser-visited peninsula of Peloponnese, stroll the narrow streets of Monemvasia, Greece s Gibraltar. In Mycenae, legendary city of Agamemnon, view treasures unearthed by Heinrich Schliemann, brilliant pioneer in the field of archaeology. By special invitation, we are invited to view a private art collection on Hydra, a haven for artists and writers, before returning to the mainland. With her billowing sails, rich mahogany, and gleaming brass, the classic barque Sea Cloud has been setting the standard for luxury sailing since 1931. Her elegant appointments, fine dining, impeccable service, and intimate size make her the ideal ship for this splendid itinerary. Weather permitting, there may be an opportunity to swim in the azure waters of the Aegean. Don t miss the chance to experience the thrill of traveling to legendary islands aboard this remarkable ship, in the congenial company of members of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Association of Yale Alumni. Sincerely, Pierre Terjanian Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Curator in Charge, Department of Arms and Armor BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB Traveling with you Pierre Terjanian Pierre Terjanian is the Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Curator in Charge of The Metropolitan Museum of Art s Department of Arms and Armor. The collection in his care, the most comprehensive in the world, consists of more than 14,000 outstanding works from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and America, dating from the fifth to twentieth century. A specialist in medieval and Renaissance European armor, Pierre is expanding his interests into new areas, including the weapons and armor of the ancient world. A native of Strasbourg, France, Pierre obtained a masters degree in law from Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas, a masters of science degree in management from HEC Paris, and a doctoral degree in history from Université de Metz. He has also done graduate study at the University of California, Berkeley. He joined the Museum as Curator in the Department of Arms and Armor in 2012 and was appointed to Curator in Charge in 2013. Departure Sunday, July 21 Depart on an overnight flight to Athens. Athens, Greece / Sea Cloud Monday, July 22 Arrive in Athens and transfer to Piraeus and the awaiting Sea Cloud. In the late afternoon, be on deck as the ship sails past the Temple of Poseidon, a dazzling landmark poised atop Cape Sounion. L, D Delos / Mykonos Tuesday, July 23 Cross the Aegean this morning to call at the pristine island of Delos. Tiny and uninhabited, Delos is the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. On a walking tour, explore the extensive ruins of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the main shrines of Apollo and Artemis, the startlingly detailed mosaics found in excavated mansions, and the iconic Terrace of the Lions. In the late afternoon, sail to nearby Mykonos, where there will be time to enjoy its cafés and lively tavernas. Sea Cloud sails in the late evening. Naxos Wednesday, July 24 Step ashore this afternoon on Naxos, whose dramatic Temple of Apollo defines the harbor. Our visit includes the Archaeological Museum, with its fine collection of early Cylcadic marble figures, as well the marble quarry of Flerio, where two massive kouroi lie unfinished and abandoned. Folegandros Thursday, July 25 This morning we arrive at the island of Folegandros. Explore the village of Chora, with its centuries-old walls and a unique center comprised of three town squares. View the Kastro, the 8th-century Venetian fortress, and the hilltop Church of Panagia, which offers magnificent views of the west coast. Monemvasia Friday, July 26 After a morning at sea, arrive at Monemvasia on the Peloponnese. Known as Greece s Gibraltar, this Byzantine fortified town lies within a depression on a steep rock 984 feet high, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. Explore its dense warren of citadels, churches, ramparts, and charming squares. Nafplio / Epidaurus / Mycenae Saturday, July 27 From the port of Nafplio, depart for Epidaurus, the ancient shrine of Asklepios, god of medicine. This enchanting site is dominated by the 4th-century theater, one of the bestpreserved classical buildings in Greece. Continue to Mycenae, the legendary city of Agamemnon. Enter through the Lion Gate to see the remains of the palace, royal tombs, and defensive walls. Visit the Archaeological Museum, then continue to the monumental Treasury of Atreus, a stone beehive tomb, built circa 1300 B.C. Hydra Sunday, July 28 This morning we tender to the delightful island of Hydra, which is closed to motor traffic. Many of Hydra s 18th- and 19th-century stone mansions have been restored by artists and writers, and the island s tiny harbor is surrounded by cafés and art galleries. By special arrangement, we are invited to the home of an art collector. Enjoy an afternoon under sail and gather this evening for the captain s farewell dinner. Piraeus / Return Monday, July 29 Disembark Sea Cloud this morning in Piraeus, and transfer to Athens airport for flights home.
