June 19 26, 2015 Scandinavian Seafaring A Midsummer s Eve Voyage aboard the elegant Sea Cloud II

Dear National Trust Traveler, Fhighlighted by four nights aboard the extraordinary ollow in the wake of the ancient Vikings and immerse yourself in the rich history of Scandinavia on this eight-day adventure in Norway and Denmark, Sea Cloud II. Delve into the region s seafaring heritage during visits to several unique and fascinating museums on the Bygdøy Peninsula near Oslo. Then embark the exquisite Sea Cloud II and cruise through the picturesque Skagerrak and Kattegat straits that connect the Baltic and North Seas, ending in Kiel, Germany, for disembarkation and flights home. This itinerary is packed with excursion options designed to allow you to focus on the seafaring theme or combine it with visits to top art museums and historic sites. In addition, since cruise dates coincide with Midsummer s Eve, a traditional Scandinavian holiday celebrating the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, you will enjoy an evening of bonfires and singing along with the Danes on the beaches of Skagen, when extended hours of sunlight and mild temperatures are particularly welcome after long, cold winters. A journey aboard the Sea Cloud II is a memorable experience on one of the most luxurious vessels afloat. Whether relaxing on deck beneath 30,000 square feet of billowing canvas, all hand set by the crew, or enjoying the spacious accommodations, superb cuisine, and excellent service of the staff, you will feel part of a bygone era of seafaring elegance that the Vikings never could have imagined. Optional pre- and post-tour extensions, to Norway s fjordlands and Berlin, respectively, are also available. National Trust travelers are sharing this memorable adventure with travelers from Yale, Princeton, and Smith College, and the Sea Cloud II accommodates just 78 guests. Please contact us today to reserve your place now. Sincerely, Scott Gerloff Director, National Trust Tours For information on this or other National Trust Tours, call (888) 484-8785. The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to saving historic places and revitalizing America s communities. Immerse yourself in Scandinavia s long and storied seafaring history from the Vikings to Thor Heyerdahl; explore fascinating art and open-air museums; and enjoy long, light-filled summer evenings and a delightful Midsummer Eve s celebration as you sail from Oslo to Copenhagen aboard the luxurious Sea Cloud II. Aarhus Old Town study leaders James Hepokoski, Professor of Music at Yale, has taught there since 1999 and now serves as chair of the Department of Music. He is a specialist in operatic, symphonic, and chamber music from the 18th to the 20th centuries, particularly its political and cultural implications. His courses range from Mozart, Beethoven, and European Nationalism to American Music, 1920s Blues, and Cole Porter songs. In 2010 he was awarded Yale College s Sidonie Miskimin Clauss Prize for Teaching Excellence in the Humanities. He is the co-author of the awardwinning Elements of Sonata Theory. For this program he will explore music s important role in the construction of the Scandinavian national identity. James Lowenthal is Professor of Astronomy at Smith College. In his research he explores the origins of galaxies by using the world s largest telescopes to peer more than 90 percent of the way back in time to the Big Bang, and he also leads student projects on exoplanets. His fascination with astronomy began in New York City with a home-made telescope he still uses to photograph the heavens from his backyard, and includes a book on total solar eclipses he published while still an undergraduate at Yale. After earning a PhD from the University of Arizona, he did postdoctoral work at Johns Hopkins, NASA s Space Telescope Science Institute, and UC Santa Cruz before joining the astronomy faculty at UMass Amherst in 1997 and moving to Smith in 2002.
