Every team, or side, is distinguished by its costume; ours is a red belt and baldric over white shirt and trousers. Our hats are decorated to individual taste. The baldric bears the symbol of Chaucer s Wyf of Bath on the rosette. The side was founded by a Bathampton village school teacher in 1934 and has danced continuously since then. In June 1968 we danced into the Morris Ring, an association of more than 150 Morris sides formed, also in 1934, to encourage performance of the Morris and maintain its traditions and preserve its history. We dance in the street, on the village green, outside the pub and we have taken the Morris all over Britain and Europe. We dance because we enjoy it and believe these old dances still have a place in the modern world. We hope you enjoy the performance too and you can always join in the luck of the Morris by putting a coin in the hat or the horse s mouth.

Our 2017 autumn tour took the Morris to Prague. Dancing in the old town was a pleasure. The medieval squares alive with tourists. George Square open and sunny. A local market on one side. Old men, little kids, mums and shoppers enjoying the morning found time to watch. Peace Square with its massive church drew a crowd. Some came to talk to us. One said: I came here sad and upset this morning but you have made me really happy. We danced and drank beer on the Vltava riverside. Then Kutná Hora, a world heritage city 70km from Prague, surprised us with the Sedlec Ossuary, a church decorated with thousands of human bones. By contrast the beautiful cathedral bathed in natural light pleasingly lacked religious bling. We danced here for Chinese and local Czechs. Everyone interested in our culture having never realised that we English actually have a folk culture. Demonstrating it to the world is one of our regular privileges.

? Bathampton Morris Men need MORE men The Morris is an age old tradition which has been performed on village greens, and in towns and pubs for centuries. The Bathampton Morris Men take great pleasure in performing our English traditional dances for your enjoyment and hope our unique heritage will continue through the coming centuries. But it will survive only as long as people are prepared to perform it. We are always looking for new members to keep the tradition alive and have lots of fun doing so. Why not join us as a dancer or as a musician. You'll enjoy it too.
