UNDISCOVERED CAPE VERDE Exploring rugged Atlantic Islands... Tour Code: 48950 Grade 6 Holiday Duration: 14 nights HOLIDAY DATES 26th Jan 2019-9th Feb 2019, 26th Oct 2019-9th Nov 2019 19th Dec 2019-2nd Jan 2020 The Cape Verde Islands offer a unique blend of African and Portuguese history. We go to the geologically younger, where the way of life is relatively untouched by the outside world HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS Explore the dramatic canyons and fertile oases of Cape Verde s "ribeiras". Meet friendly farmers and children on cobbled mountain and coastal trails. Discover Cidade Velha, the earliest colonial city - now a World Heritage site. Enjoy the blend of African and Portuguese culture, music and cuisine.

UNDISCOVERED CAPE VERDE A day's good walking up the ribeiras on Santo Anto rewards you with stunning vistas over volcanic mountains, deep gorges and the bluest of seas. The prospect of a refreshing ocean dip, perhaps accompanied by a wellearned sundowner drink, entices you on the downward slope towards the white sand beaches. Tourism is still in its infancy here with the main development beside the sandy beaches of the flatter eastern islands. Instead, we head for the geologically younger, more rugged islands where there is some superb walking, and where the way of life is often relatively untouched by the outside world. We can enjoy the freshness of this new destination, while recognising that facilities will sometimes be limited. Our introduction to the archipelago is with the largest island of Santiago. Here we first stay on the coast at Cidade Velha, before travelling into the mountains to So Domingos, to see a glimpse of life in the very African interior. We continue to the island of Sao Vicente where we explore the fascinating city of Mindelo, with its British historical connection, and enjoy a beach walk. We then catch the ferry to Santo Anto, the furthest island west in the archipelago, where we spend several days exploring the ancient cobbled pathways of this walkers' paradise. This is one of the world's most dramatic landscapes, with high cliffs, deep valleys and ravines. We'll walk the ribeiras and appreciate the stunning scenery. We return to Sao Vicente for one night before we return to the UK. Cape Verde offers beautiful landscapes, turquoise seas, exceptional walking and a warm, sincere welcome. Bring your sense of adventure and pioneer spirit, for a truly memorable experience. All groups will be accompanied by a local guide throughout. WHAT'S INCLUDED Return flights from Heathrow to Praia return São Vicente to Heathrow via Lisbon both ways (TAP Portugal) Inter island flight and ferries Airport/Port transfers B&B en suite accommodation Dinners taken at hotels and at local restaurants All local transport costs. HOLIDAY GRADE This is a grade 6 walking holiday where we have the opportunity to fully explore the Cape Verde islands. It is also a pioneer holiday as the itinerary and walks are more adventurous and sometimes off the beaten track. The walks show the great diversity of the islands, from small villages, cultivated terraces, dramatic coastal walks and breathtaking volcanic landscapes. Much of the walking is done on trails and paths which will require surefootedness and walking poles are almost essential. A reasonably good head for heights is needed in places. Some of the paths we follow are rough and stony underfoot. On some days, the walks will be top of grade, particularly when the weather is hot. Those who might normally choose a higher grade holiday would especially appreciate this holiday and combined with the scenery, culture and general ambience of the islands make it a very rewarding trip for the adventurous pioneer traveller. We can expect to walk 5-10 miles a day, note that due to the dramatic nature of the landscape on some walks' cumulative descent figures will be up to 1100m, ascent figures will be under 700m. Of all the locations we stay in, Rui Vaz on Santiago Island, at 800m, is the highest. The highest point that can be reached on this holiday is 1648m near Lagoa on the island of Santo Anto. This walk and altitude is dependent on the weather conditions. If the weather conditions are not suitable then we will not be able to complete this particular walk.

Proposed Itinerary Our bottom line is happy travellers, and to that end we trust our tour leaders to use the itinerary below as a basis for providing you with a great holiday. We expect our leaders to make adjustments to the itinerary if the weather, group ability or other local conditions make that necessary. There are normally more options available to our leaders than those listed below and one or more of these options may well be chosen. All distances, heights & timings are approximate. Key to Meals: B - Breakfast, L - Lunch, D - Dinner. In flight meals, if appropriate, will be advised in your final travel documents Day: 1 - Santiago (No Meals) Fly from London Heathrow to Praia on the island of Santiago (via Lisbon). We'll transfer to our hotel in Cidade Velha for two nights' accommodation. Day: 2 - Santiago (B,D) Today we'll explore Cidade Velha, a historic village and a UNESCO world heritage site. Cidad Velha, once known as Riberia Grande, became the first European colonial outpost in the tropics. Two churches, a royal fortress and the marble Pillory square still remain. We will take an interesting walk through a surprisingly green lush valley, passing a Baobab or two on the way and the possibility of seeing a Kingfisher as we go. We will spend some time sightseeing around the area. Day: 3 - Santiago (B,D) Today we continue to Sao Domingos and Rui Vaz where we stay for three nights. En route we will visit Tarrafal in the north of the island where we enjoy a walk and have time for lunch. One of the walks we may follow will take us along the coast with fine views of Tarrafal. As our stay in Rui Vaz is in the mountains, you may find the temperature here cooler and the day often starts with misty mountains. 4 miles (6.5km) ascent/descent 250m, 2 ½ hours. Day: 4 to 5 - Santiago (B,D) From Rui Vaz we'll see spectacular craggy mountains that offer a wonderful contrast to our time spent on the coast. There will be beautiful views across the island, the mountain peaks and plenty of opportunity to encounter local rural life and perhaps the odd donkey! Please see the walks below for an idea of the routes we may encounter during our stay here. Rui Vaz, Monte Tchota and Monte Gamboa: After a circular walk through the countryside south of our hotel in the mountains, we climb steadily to Monte Tchota and on along a ridge to Monte Gamboa with views of Fogo Island. 9 miles (14.4km), ascents/descent 550m, 5 hours. Longueira and Sao Jorge Dos Orgaos: A walk with great views of the surrounding jagged peaks. There will be a continuous descend where we will pass through eucalyptus and a small botanical garden towards the village of Sao Jorge dos Orgaos. 4.3 miles (7km), ascent 600m / descent 560m, 4½ hours. Day: 6 - São Vicente (B,D) We'll leave Santiago and take an evening flight from Praia to Mindelo, Sao Vicente. We will transfer to our hotel for two nights' accommodation. Day: 7 - São Vicente (B,D) We'll discover Mindelo today with an orientation walk around the area where we'll learn about the local history and have some free time to explore more of the area independently.

Day: 8 - Santo Antão (B,D) We'll take a ferry from Sao Vicente to Santo Antao for 6 nights' accommodation (possibly with an early start depending on ferry schedules). Santo Antao is widely mountainous with high peaks, rugged cliffs and deep ravines. The island is very diverse, as some areas are rich in vegetation whereas other areas are very barren. The landscape is extremely dramatic and some of the best scenery of the holiday can be found here! In the afternoon we will take an introductory walk from Corda to Coculi. The route will take us on a long decent with some challenging stony sections but with spectacular views into the ribeiras on both sides. We will follow the windy gravel path down the mountainside on donkey paths. 5 miles (8km), ascent negligible / descent 850m, 2 ½ hours. Day: 9 to 13 - Santo Antão (B,D) During our time on Santo Antao, our walks will take us on cobbled paths with views into the ribeiras, past extinct craters, into verdant valleys and along coastal paths. We'll get an insight into rural island life as we will pass small hamlets and cultivated terraces. We will enjoy a mix of hotel and local restaurant evening meals. Our walks may include one or more of the following examples: Cova and Ribeira de Paul: This is one of the most beautiful walks of the holiday with many contrasts. Starting high on the ridge, it passes an extinct crater before descending dramatically into the lush Ribeira de Paul. The descent is over the grade and the track is a cobbled path. Down in the Ribeira, the quiet road passes a series of interesting hamlets. 9 miles (14.4km), ascent 250m / descent 1350m, 5 hours. Cruzinha Coastal Walk: A picturesque coastal walk with ascents and descents through dramatic cliff terraces. This walk is part of the St Antao West Coast Trail where there are steep ascents and descents. We'll walk on old cobble stoned paths connecting the hamlets and deserted houses. We'll pass 2 small villages where there are usually shops to purchase snacks and drinks. 8.8 miles (14.3km), ascents / descents 500m, 4 ½ hours. Espongeiro to Caibros: A walk through the highlands that you'd never know existed into a stunning descent down a spectacular ribeira. The descent is over the grade so an easier alternative is possible. Perfect views for a picnic lunch. 9 miles (14.4km), ascent 100m / descent 1100m, 5 hours. Day: 14 - São Vicente (B,D) Today we'll return to Mindelo on Sao Vicente by ferry for our last night in the Cape Verde Islands. Depending on ferry schedules, we may have a morning walk on San Antao before we return to Mindelo on Sao Vicente or perhaps further exploration of Sao Vicente. Day: 15 - In Flight (B) We will depart Sao Vicente for our flight back to London Heathrow via Lisbon. Optional Excursions A range of local excursions and activities may be available to book at your destination through a local operator. We have no involvement in such activities or excursions which are not run, supervised or controlled in any way by us. Your contract will be with the local activity supplier and we accept no responsibility for their actions or omissions. Leaders Evening Briefing Each evening, your tour leader will discuss with you the programme for the following day. If you do not wish to join the organised group programme, please let the leader know. Local Transport Costs All local transport costs in conjunction with the advertised activity programme are included in the holiday cost. Personal Expenditure Budgeting for Extras When budgeting for your holiday, you will need to consider drinks, any meals not included in the holiday price, non-included entrance fees, optional excursions you may choose to participate in locally and any souvenirs or additional services such as laundry. A general guideline for lunches and drinks is 10-20 per person per day. Tipping Although entirely at your own discretion, tipping is an important aspect of tourism and hospitality life and expectations are fairly high. In order to simplify tipping, we strongly recommend that you allow your leader to take care of making sure tips are given to hotel and restaurant staff & to local guides and drivers. This will be done using some funds provided by us together with, if you wish, a contribution from you, which he/she will collect during the holiday.

Tipping Your leader will have some funds for tipping hotel staff and drivers. You may wish to consider allowing some cash, perhaps 2 per day, to supplement this since drivers and staff tend to be mines of information and very keen to offer assistance. As in many African countries the people rely on tips as part of their income. It must be stressed however that such tips are at your own discretion. Small Groups Group Size Coming from all walks of life your fellow travelling companions will share your desire to discover great things and have a wonderful holiday. Enjoy their infectious enthusiasm, camaraderie and great dinner conversation. Our maximum group size for guided walks between grade 5 and grade 8 is 18 persons. Tour Leaders Your tour leader makes the world of difference to your holiday and ours are as passionate about discovering the world on foot as you are. They're resourceful, organised and widely travelled. They will handle all the local administration and other needs that might arise to ensure that you don't have to worry about planning your days and you can enjoy your holiday. Although leading group holidays, they won't forget that every group is made up of individuals. Each tour leader has their own individual style, talents and professional backgrounds and all are trained, qualified, experienced and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting and inspiring as possible. On most holidays of 7 nights and over, the tour leader will have one day's break a week, enabling you to have a 'free' day too!

Travel Details We fly from London Heathrow to Praia, Santiago via Lisbon and return from So Vicente to London Heathrow via Lisbon with TAP Air Portugal. The flight between Santiago and So Vicente is arranged by us. Due to restrictions on the flights within Cape Verde the checked in baggage allowance on BINTER is 20kg - one piece only - plus one piece of hand baggage of 5kg. For all those booking a flight or rail inclusive holiday, details of your travel arrangements and baggage allowance will be confirmed in your travel documents, sent to you approximately 10 days prior to departure. Land Only If you are joining and leaving at your holiday overseas we assume, unless you advise us otherwise, that you will join and leave the holiday from your hotel. Although airport transfers are not included for those making their own independent travel arrangements, if you wish to join the group at the overseas airport, depending on your flight arrival time, you may be able to be included on the group's transfer. Please contact us at least 5 weeks before departure for more details. Please note that your flight must arrive within 30 minutes of the group flight to be able to join the group transfer. We also need your flight number, arrival time and departure point so that the group leader is able to meet up with you. If you wish to organise your own flights from a non-uk or provincial airport or travel by rail or car to your holiday destination, 'no-travel' reductions are often available. Please contact us for details. Before finalising any independent travel arrangements, please check with us first - especially if doing so 12 weeks or more before your intended date of travel. If you do intend to join your holiday locally please do tell us at least 14 weeks in advance. Passports and Visas A passport is required for travel and passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Cape Verde. From 1 January 2019, if you have a British Citizen passport you can enter Cape Verde as a visitor for stays of up to 90 days without a visa. In place of a visa, you will be required to pay an new Airport Security Tax (TSA) of 3,400 escudos (approximately 30) on arrival in Cape Verde. This does not apply to visitors who are normally resident in Cape Verde. If you're travelling on a different type of British passport or intending to stay longer than 90 days, you should check entry requirements with the nearest Cape Verde Embassy.

General Passport & Visa Advice You should have at least 6 months left on your passport from your date of arrival. If you renewed a 10 year passport before it expired, extra months may have been added to your passport's expiry date. These extra months will not count. Please ensure to regularly check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for updates on passport requirements leading up to and after Brexit negotiations or contact us for more assistance. Foreign and Commonwealth Brexit Information for Passports: www.gov.uk/guidance/passportrules-for-travel-toeurope-after-brexit Non British Passport holders should consult the host countries embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements. It is a good idea to carry photocopies of the personal details pages of your passport. Should you lose your passport, this may assist with the issue of replacement documents and your return to your home country. Passport and visa requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you inform yourself from a professionally qualified source on, and comply with, such requirements. General travel and destination advice for UK nationals is available from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office at www.fco.gov.uk/travel and at www.gov.uk/travelaware.

Footwear Good quality waterproof walking boots with a moulded sole and deep tread and which provide good ankle support are essential for the walking programme on this holiday. Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good moulded rubber sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks. We recommend that you either wear your walking boots or shoes or pack them and some waterproofs in your hand luggage as in the unlikely event that your hold luggage is delayed, you will still be able to participate in the holiday programme. Outdoor activities are always more enjoyable if you are prepared. The following list is a basic guideline that will enhance your experience. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. A basic kit list is likely to include: - Waterproof jacket (Goretex or similar) and trousers - Lightweight, quick drying trousers - Several polo shirts, T-shirts or specialist walking shirts - Fleece jacket - Comfortable walking socks - Warm hat and gloves (if appropriate) - Sun hat, sunglasses, lip salve and high SPF sun block - Swimwear (if appropriate) - Day sack (25 litre capacity) to comfortably carry the kit you'll take out for the day - Strong polythene bags to keep the contents of your daypack dry - Water bottle(s) - at least 1 litre capacity - Basic first aid kit (plasters, blister treatment, antiseptic etc) - Insect repellent - Plastic container and reusable cutlery for your picnic lunches - Walking/trekking poles (if applicable) Trekking Poles Many of our clients find walking poles hugely beneficial when walking. They can both reduce stress on the knees and aid confidence. If you use them please make sure that you have the rubber tips covering the sharp metal points. There is increasing evidence that the bare metal tips are damaging footpaths both in the UK and abroad. Water-to-Go An alternative to bottled water from single-use sealed water bottles is filtered water from a refillable bottle containing its own water filter such as a Water-to-go bottle available from www.watertogo.eu. Just fill up from any water source and save the environment from disposable plastic bottles. Please be aware of what's going on around you, take sensible precautions with your credit cards and passport and avoid displays of wealth such as wearing expensive jewellery or watches. Do not carry more cash on you than you will need for each day, and we recommend that a money belt is used. Cultural Awareness Responsible Travel We're committed to ethical tourism in all our destinations. Our holidays are designed for you to discover the essence of the country you are visiting. Travelling in small groups not only gives you an up close and personal experience of your destination, but minimises your impact on the immediate environment. We feel that the most important starting point to protect the environment is to be out in it. For more details visit our website. Heart & Sole We appreciate that we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our profits to help make a difference to people's lives. Heart & Sole is a venture managed by our office staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit. Through Heart & Sole, we hope to make more of a long term, direct impact to these communities, particularly in less developed countries where even a small amount goes a long way. See our website for more information and details of some of the projects we support. SOS Children's Villages Heart & Sole is proud to sponsor SOS Children's Villages in Cape Verde. This charity provides help for 78,000 children in 125 countries who have been orphaned through AIDS, poverty or disasters of war. They provide the children with a family and a home in a purpose built village, where they are cared for by an SOS mother until they are an independent adult. By travelling with us to Cape Verde, in addition to experiencing the joy of visiting new places, you can help make a difference. Communication Mobile Phones Please do provide us with a mobile phone contact number. We will only use this to contact you with important information relating to your holiday arrangements. Please do keep your mobile phones switched on and readily available when travelling to the airport or if delayed in transit so that we can contact you with any last minute information relating to your travel arrangements. As a matter of courtesy, please switch off your mobile phone during walks, or endeavour to minimise its use. Please also try to minimise the use of mobile devices during group meals.
