President s Notes We are buttoning up for winter here at the Historical Society. Seems like fall plunged us into the cold early, but we are hardy stock here in the mitten state. Please do not forget to come out and shop for last minute gifts during our Christmas Sale on Saturday, December 1, from 10-4. We really do have something for everyone and our prices are right. We especially love our Drayton Plains Fish Hatchery sweatshirts & t-shirts, beautifully designed by our own, Rich Welsh. Wear one with pride to celebrate our Fish Hatchery history. Keep in mind our schedule for the coming year: The Hatchery House and Log Cabin close after December 5, 2018, & will open again on April 3, 2019. The Village will open for the season May 1, 2019. And IMPORTANT, even for April, when the Waterford School District is closed, we are closed. My idea of Christmas, whether oldfashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that? VOLUME 23, NUMBER 4 WATERFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWSBILL PAGE 3 Ride the rails with an authentic 100 year steam engine train at the Little River Railroad from Memorial Day weekend to the last weekend in October. The 110 steam engine is a 4-6-2 Pacific type locomotive weighing approximately 58 tons. It is the smallest of its kind ever built for standard gauge and it is also a one of a kind locomotive. The Number 1 is an 0-4-0T tank steam engine. Number 1 is still a mystery as to when it was exactly built. We do know that its frame and wheels were built in 1908. The Little River Railroad is not-for-profit organization dedicated to the restoration, operation and preservation of historic railroad equipment. The Little River Railroad is supported by ticket sales, concession sales, memberships and donations. The Little River Railroad is operated by all volunteers. PAGE 4 WATERFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWSBILL VOLUME 23, NUMBER 4 History in Winter Holly Dickens Festival As the oldest Charles Dickens themed event in the United States, the Holly Dickens Festival celebrates the legacy of one of history s most famous authors, A Christmas Carol. The festival transforms Holly, Michigan, into a holiday wonderland with a tree lighting, visits with Santa and holiday shopping opportunities. There is a quaint and beautiful town in Holly. The holiday season will find people caught up in the story of Charles Dickens. In Holly smell the roasting chestnuts and hot chocolate. Get lost in the sounds of Christmas carols sung on the streets. Take in the colors and decorations of the shops. Feel the warmth by being greeted on the streets. Holly truly comes alive at this time of the y e a r. T h e Dickens Festival is truly a family tradition that can not be missed! During the Dickens Festival games and festivities last all afternoon and early evening. The stores and eateries are all open for Holiday shopping. Listen for the towne crier. You may bump into Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge.
