From the Directors Well, hello there CC-Riders! I apologize for letting the newsletter nap after our October meeting. I had good intentions to roust it from its slumber after our Christmas party until life took a sudden turn on November 9 th. The crosswind of personal despair and deep felt empathy pushed me off the road. The sorrow of losing children is never far from the surface of daily life. Jim and Roxie wanted me to include in the newsletter their heart-felt thank-you for the love and support you folks extended to them so here it is: THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT! Jim & Roxie Anderson January 5 th Meeting. It was great to get back together again on Saturday. You folks made Carol and me feel welcome on our first chapter visit way back in 2015. We have enjoyed your companionship ever since. We had 26 people at our get-together, 16 chapter members and 10 visitors from the district who dropped by for a semi-annual visit and to issue Gold Award certificates and pins to recognize and celebrate our chapter s Motorist Awareness efforts in 2018. Recipients of the Gold Award were: Jim Anderson*, Roxie Anderson, Don Banwart, Jane Banwart, Tom Bishop, Bob Blodgett, Carol Blodgett, Ken Kohler*, Marge Kohler*, Allen Lorimor, Rhonda Lorimor, Donna Reed, Randy Reed*, Bob Stout, and Joan Stout (*Not in photo). The 10 district visitors were: John & Yvette Moravec (District Directors), John & Barb Kilmer (Ass t Motorist Awareness Coordinators), Roger & Vicki Harris (Member Enhancement & Social Coordinators), Roxanne Oder (University Coordinator), Sue Thompson (Motorist Awareness Coordinator and Newsletter Editor), Don & June Detwiler (Couple of the Year). Motorist Awareness John Kilmer thanked us for our engagement in motorist awareness activities an 2018 and informed us that the district is making a traveling Motorist Awareness plaque to pass around Iowa chapters annually in recognition of the chapter that did the most for motorist awareness. I know that some chapter members would like to do fewer parades in 2019. An analysis of member interest in day rides on the end-of-year survey revealed that the average interest in activities (21 were listed) by 16 members was 7.59 with a range of interest from a high of 15 members to a low of 1 member. Only 3 (July 4 th, Cherokee Rodeo, Odebolt Creek Days) of the of the 5 parades were on the survey and had an average endorsement of 9, a little above average. Making motorists aware of motorcycles is one of the major priorities of GWRRA and certainly of members of our chapter. If we choose to do fewer parades, we need to step it up in other awareness efforts. Between now and riding season, which is just a few snow storms around the corner, let s make it a chapter priority to decide what motorist awareness activities we will undertake in 2019 and design what we will do to bring them to fruition. 2

Our efforts improve the safety of motorcyclists and the life we save may be our own. Here is a nonexhaustive list of potential motorist awareness activities we could choose from for 2019. Between now and our February 2 nd meeting, review the list and come to the meeting with ideas and strategies for conducting some of them. Motorist Awareness activities can include but are not limited to events, presentations, exhibits at: Public or private schools or universities Community organizations-civic/religious Driving schools AAA or AARP driver classes Company safety day Community safety day National night out Community festival or fair During MAP month (May) Literature distribution MAP table at any event Local mall Community or company bike night Bike or car show Highway rest stops Boy s/girl s Club or Boy/Girl Scout event Yard signage Swap meet or flea market Personal conversation about GWRRA ride safety Created & shared signage/social media/bumper stickers Local parades Bike shows in department store lots Annual Financial Report Don Banwart, our beloved Treasurer, deserves a big round of applause and a hearty thank-you for completing, once again, our Chapter s annual financial report. Thank-you Don for your labor of love! Charity Donation at our Christmas party in lieu of $10 gifts, members donated $180 to a charity fund that, had the weather cooperated in December, we would have given to a representative of Mid-Sioux Opportunities. We decided to add $20 to round the fund to $200. Two of our district guests, John Moravec and Roxanne Oder, contributed $10 each. Donna Reed has been our go-to member for coordinating this effort but weather and scheduling difficulties between us and the representative have bogged it down. Hopefully the Mid-Sioux rep will visit us in March to finalize the donation. Thank you Donna for your work. After-Meeting Rides 12 of 16 members expressed interest in reinvigorating after-meeting rides. I passed around a list of 28 diners, drive-ins, and dives many of which are within range of a day ride particularly if we truncate the meeting. Randy told me that 2 ½ to 3 hours is the limit for day rides. Because we all seem to have a strong fondness for food and ice cream, destinations that provide both are likely prospects. I let after-meeting rides lapse, because the talent for planning them is still developing. It takes me hours to plan those trips. In short, if members want to do after-meeting rides, I need help with the planning. I have attached a detailed list of diners, drive-ins, and dives (addresses, hours, and contact information) for the February meeting. It will up to members to make after-meeting rides happen. Choose a destination, plan a route, make reservations and lead the ride (or designate a ride leader). I can t do all of it by myself. Odds & Ends and Quasi-random Thoughts here are a few blurbs about unrelated items. Sue Thompson needs a new or used chapter shirt with a chapter patch for something the district is planning. Do we want to select a chapter couple-of-the-year and individual-of-the-year? There are established criteria for aiding in the selections. Does anyone have a Santa Suit or an Elf Suit? Carol B. has something in mind for motorist awareness. Those of you who are interested in dropping in on other chapter meetings, let s make it happen. 3

No, I mean really! A Colorado ride is in the planning by Bob Stout and is tentatively scheduled for August 10-18. It ll be on the Chapter Ride Schedule. Let s talk about the date at the February meeting because I heard some rumbling that folks who want to go cannot make that date work. Don and Jane, I cannot find the email from last fall with the record of most states visited in 2018. I promised you a certificate and would like to follow through. Should we order new shirts with chapter patch and name tags? Finding gold colored shirts is challenging. Should we choose a color that s easier to find? Should we get shirts with pockets? Chapter F Traveling Plaque Chapter CC captured the traveling plaque at John & Barb Kilmer s Model Train Pot-Luck on 28 July 2019. According to the rules of capture, any chapter may come and take the plaque from us by giving us advanced notice of their intention to claim it and provided at least five members of the chapter come for the capture.
