Co-Ordinators Comments On behalf of all the Canterbury Branch members I wish to welcome Nicola Ebert to the Club. I hope you enjoy your time with us and remember to uphold the Club motto Grow Old Disgracefully. Thanks to everyone that made the effort to turn up for our St John cheque presentation in Ashburton on Sunday 3 rd July. We handed over a cheque for $2,700, which was a great effort, considering everything that has been going on around here and the bad weather on ANZAC Day. I m also very impressed by the number of Club members from outside of the Canterbury Area that have sent the Branch money to purchase a St John Run Badge. I made a comment in the June Ulyssian that we had 65 badges left and if anyone wanted one to send me the money. Just goes to show that there are Club members out there that are prepared to help when you ask. I still have a few badges left if you re after one ($10ea). Seen the first of the new season lambs on my way down to Ashburton the other weekend and they seem to be arriving earlier these days. Here we are in early July and the snow and frosts are just starting to arrive. I m not complaining, as it still makes for good riding conditions, but please be aware of the shaded spots on the road at this time of year, as the frost and ice can stay in these areas all day. This year s mid-winter Christmas party on Saturday 16th July at Twiggers is shaping up to be a good night out, as 42 tickets have been sold. Hopefully we ll see everyone up on the dance floor having a good time and I m sure there will be plenty of photos on the website after the event. The ladies coffee mornings on the last Saturday of the month at Annie s (Tower Junction) from 10am are now a regular event. Please note that this is not restricted to members only and wives and partners (female) are very welcome. Gear Sales - Please check with the Branch quartermaster (Marilyn and Roger), as a lot of the Clubs gear sales items have reduced in price WEF 1 July 11. For an example the windscreen stickers (inside & out) have gone down in price from $12 to $5ea and the large and small logo long sleeve T-shirts are now $30. Mentoring David Moore is the coordinator for the Branch mentoring programme. David and his fellow mentors, are now ready to start offering you free assistance with improving your riding style and gaining more confidence. Please contact (027 322 5599) David to arrange for a mentor to be assigned to you.

On Saturday 6 th August we ll see Club members making their way to Murchison for the Ulysses Clubs South Island Remembrance Service. The service is held in the RSA Hall from 1:00pm. This is a time when we all should gather, to remember those Ulyssians that have passed on. There are now two Remembrance books and the names of all the deceased members in these books are read out at the service. If the weather is to cold for you to ride over (it is for Maureen and I), why don t you get together with some other Branch members and car pool. This is a Canterbury Branch organised event for the Club and it would be nice to see a good attendance from Canterbury. This month s social evening will be held on Wednesday the 20th July and our guest speaker will be Grant Lilly from Avon City Suzuki. Until next month keep the shiny side up. Mike # 2415 Ladies Coffee Morningt This social event is for the Lady Ulysses members, Ulyssians wives or their lady partners. Meeting place : Annie's café at Tower Junction. (next to Baker's delight) Time : 10 am onwards Date : Saturday 30 July A great opportunity for just the cost of a coffee for the ladies to get together and talk about what ever it is they talk about. ( probably about how great us men are) So guys, if you have received this invite how about passing it on to your fair lady and in return this will leave you with free time to watch the TV or clean the bike. No booking required, just turn up at Annie's Café after 10.00am on 30 July. There is a table booked at the back of the café. Cheers, Brian Schlaadt Social Convenor

The Auckland branch had planned a weekend run to Taupo and it was on the eve of the run, 5 th August 1988 that they learnt of the death of there friend Mel who had been in hospital for some weeks after an accident on his bike. During the weekend the members present in Taupo decided to remember Mel the following year (1989) with a Memorial Run for which a badge would be struck. Since that time we have lost a number of good friends and fellow motorcyclists through accidents or illness and after the first Memorial Run it was decided to change the title to Remembrance Run in order to include all riders who wished to come along to remember old friends. The first South Island Remembrance Run was held in Twizel in August 1990. The following year the service was held in Murchison on the 4th August 1991, so this year s service is our 22nd in the South Island. Considering the time of year and possible road conditions (ice, snow etc) travelling by car is OK, as it s your participation we would like to see. For more details contact Mike Dew, Canterbury Branch Coordinator, Telephone (03) 359 4949 (evenings) or email: canterbury@ulysses.org.nz Canterbury Branch website - http://www.ulysses.org.nz/canterbury

This is a reminder that the overnighter to Reefton, staying at the Old Nurses Home is definitely happening on 15 th October. Some folks are not keen on taking the scenic Christchurch Greymouth Westport Reefton route and would prefer to go Christchurch Reefton directly either via Arthurs Pass or Springs Junction. This is understandable as the scenic route is quite long so group leaving times and preferred can be organized closer to the date so don t be a wuss and let minor details like that stop you from going. Take your tin-top (car) if the weather is not good but just get there. Let s show Reefton what Ulybods are all about. However. It IS filling up fast and I m not sure how many rooms are still available so if you haven t done your booking (just click on the link below to connect with their website) get your A into G and please BOOK NOW or you will most likely lose out on what promises to be a great night away. We would like to book the venue out completely so it s a Ulysses only, no tourists party night. The accommodation is dirt cheap (yes, just like you). The place is very well kept and there is a large, fully equipped kitchen if you want to cook your meals (bacon and eggs on Sunday morning appeals to me) and plenty of seating to eat at. I have stayed there a few times on my bike trips from Auckland and definitely recommend it. Of course, Reefton has a good selection of hotel pubs and restaurants with beer and music so come. Let s go party! We want you to join us there! Yes that includes you lot from Nelson and Blenheim and Greymouth and Westport and Dunollie too the more the merrier. Click on the link below, book your room by sending them an email with your name and contact details (No you don t have to pay anything now) and then it s done. You can then go back to the telly. http://www.reeftonaccommodation.co.nz/accommodation-reefton.html Any questions or suggestions, please reply or phone Gene on 0274 444 771. ULYSSES CANTERBURY BRANCH WEBSITE: It is with great pleasure that I note we have reached a milestone for the branch website of over 30,000 visits since March 2009. As our Brach Website deals only with our local information on rides, activities, who we are and what we are about as a Branch of Ulysses, with a good photo record, this is a great achievement. A large number regularly visit from overseas countries each month. Some examples are Brazil, Malaysia, UK, Australia, Oman, USA, and Canada this month already. We are averaging around 1050+ visits a month to the site overall (including New Zealand), with over 2600 page views. I have tried to keep the web site clutter free but interesting and informative. Some sites I have visited for Clubs have so much info it is some times hard to find what you are looking for. Many times I have heard or have had shared with me, that a new person or couple have come on a ride with the Branch on a Sunday, because they have looked at the website to see what kind of things we get up to and who we are. They have shared that the photo record shows we are an active Club and with a friendly outlook. How people find us on the web. So when you get your news letter print it off so friends and visitors can read it, send it to friends and family via e-mail, I am sure the will be surprised at some of things we get up to in our prime years on a motorbike. Any ideas or comments, please contact me in the first instance. Robert Edgeler Ulysses #6969 Web Master Ulysses Canterbury Branch. www.ulysses.org.nz/canterbury

SOCIAL EVENT ORGANIZERS REPORT Hello all Ulyssians. For those that have booked, the Twiggers Cabaret Dine & Dance mid winter party social event is on Saturday July 16th. A reminder of the times: Start at 6.30pm Meal at 7.00pm Dancing and show at 8.00pm Bookings are now closed for this event. Maureen s ladies coffee morning was well attended and the feedback I have received has again been possitive. The next coffee meeting is the last Saturday in July being the 30th. Annie's cafe Tower Junction 10am onwards. Table reserved at back of cafe. Just turn up as no booking required. Sounds like this could be a regular event if it is supported and the demand is there. The other event planned for later in the year is Ten Pin Bowling for a Saturday evening. This should shape up to be a fun couple of hours with a competitive edge as we are looking to have two teams, those who ride motorcycles from Japan against the rest being British European, American. In other words Japa s V Bears. And yes, a Honda Wing assembled in the good old USA is a still Japa. A member has suggested a fishing weekend and planning is underway. Investergating Lake Brunner on the West Coast where cheap accommadation is available and ideal for walks and generaly chilling out. More on this when details are available. Catch ya later, Brian Schlaadt

Thought you might like these to shove in the newsletter...to prove I'm not swanning around the ocean enjoying myself living a life of leisure ha ha. These are photos of my first rig shift. She's the Ocean Patriot and we were in the process of picking up her 8 anchors. She was towed 11 miles to a new location then we set them again. cheers Chris #3487

A police motorcycle cop stops a driver for running a red light. The driver is a real jerk, steps out of his car and comes strides toward the officer, demanding to know why he is being harassed by the Gestapo! So the officer calmly tells him of the red light violation. The motorist instantly goes on a tirade, questioning the officer's ancestry, sexual orientation, etc., in rather explicit terms. The tirade goes on without the officer saying anything. When the officer finishes writing the ticket he puts an "AH" in the lower right corner of the narrative portion of the ticket. He then hands it to the 'violator' for his signature. The guy signs the ticket angrily, and when presented with his copy points to the "AH" and demands to know what it stands for. The officer says, "That's so when we go to court, I'll remember that you're an arsehole!" Two months later they're in court. The 'violator' has a bad driving record and he is in danger of losing his license, so he hired a lawyer to represent him. On the stand the officer testifies to seeing the man run the red light. Under cross examination the defense attorney asks; "Officer is this a reasonable facsimile of the ticket that you issued to my client?" Officer responds, "Yes, sir, that is the defendant's copy, his signature and mine, same number at the top." Lawyer: "Officer, is there any particular marking or notation on this ticket you don't normally make?" "Yes, sir, in the lower right corner of the narrative there is an "AH," underlined." "What does the "AH" stand for, officer?" "Aggressive and hostile, Sir." "Aggressive and hostile?" "Yes, Sir." "Officer, are you sure it doesn't stand for arsehole?"
