The World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2011 will be held at the Furama Resort and Convention Centre in Danang, Vietnam from Tuesday 10 to Friday 13 May 2011. The Conference will focus world attention on the global burden of drowning, with a specific emphasis on the epidemic of drowning deaths in developing countries. A comprehensive set of conference themes have been identified that cater to all those working to reduce the burden of drowning worldwide. These include; Drowning Research Child Drowning Interventions Emergency Response and Medical Issues Advances in Lifesaving Swimming and Water Safety Disasters and Climate Change Regional Perspectives Lifesaving Sport and Development Partnerships and Collaborations Activities and Occupations Program at a Glance Tuesday 10 May 2011 Wednesday 11 May 2011 Thursday 12 May 2011 Friday 13 May 2011 Saturday 14 May 2011 Registrations, Welcome Reception, Workshops Day One, Opening and Conference Dinner Day Two and Afternoon Interactive Tours Day Three and Closing Celebration Time to explore the rich cultural, historical and tourism highlights of Vietnam World Conference on Drowning Prevention Partners The World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2011 will be presented by the Royal Life Saving Society-Australia in collaboration with The Alliance for Safe Children and other provincial, country, regional and international partners. International Life Saving Federation (ILS) ILS is a global, non-profit federation of over 100 national lifesaving organisations. The Federation (ILS) leads the worldwide effort to reduce the global burden of drowning. Royal Life Saving Society - Australia (RLSSA) RLSSA has a proud history of lifesaving, water safety and drowning prevention in Australia. Established in 1894, Royal Life Saving has a strong commitment to reducing drowning through advocacy, education, training, research, health promotion, aquatic risk management and community and sport development. The Alliance for Safe Children (TASC) TASC was formed in 2002 to research and advocate child injury issues across Asia. TASC s research and capacity development activities in Bangladesh, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, China, Indonesia and Cambodia highlight the need for action to prevent drowning. AusAID The Australian Agency for International Development is proudly supporting the World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2011, as well as the SwimSafe survival swimming program in Danang and the International Drowning Research Centre in Bangladesh.

Invitation to Sponsor and Exhibit As President of the International Life Saving Federation I would like to invite you to participate in the World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2011. Drowning prevention needs strong global advocacy. The global burden of drowning mortality, morbidity and disability has been significantly underestimated. The burden of drowning has disproportionately affected children, low income nations and less adaptive populations. Many at risk groups are in nations and regions with no lifesaving lead organisations. The International Life Saving Federation in collaboration with other international agencies, governments and member organisations will build capacity to lead, partner and assist community drowning prevention, lifesaving and lifesaving sport projects. Local community leadership will be facilitated to engage in strategic interventions that will reduce drowning mortality and water related injury. The World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2011 will highlight effective evidence based drowning prevention strategies for Vietnam, South East Asia and at risk populations throughout the world. It is also the meeting place for those seeking to ensure best practice in lifeguarding and rescue standards, aquatic risk management and medical treatment. Message from Conference Organisers Child drowning is estimated to exceed 350,000 deaths every year in Asia, or 1000 a day. In Bangladesh drowning kills more people aged 18 years and under than infectious diseases. Although the numbers are lower but no less tragic, drowning continues to be a leading killer of children in high income countries. Royal Life Saving Society - Australia (RLSSA) is committed to providing knowledge, expertise and resources to help make a significant contribution. Hosting the World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2011 is consistent with both this commitment and our long standing reputation for providing innovative, effective leadership in the area of drowning prevention. Many of our stakeholders expected RLSSA to host this international conference in Sydney, Canberra or Melbourne. However, when presented with the scale of the drowning in developing countries and in recognising the opportunity to change perceptions, reinforce the urgent need to act, and to share the many successes of the region, Vietnam became an obvious and necessary choice. We believe that the World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2011 will give you, your organisation and it s stakeholders new perspectives and lasting memories of a global community committed to reducing the global burden of drowning. Justin Scarr Conference Convenor, Royal Life Saving Society - Australia I encourage you to consider joining us in this great challenge. Dr Steve Beerman President, International Life Saving Federation worldconferenceondrowningprevention.org

Beneficiaries of the scholarship fund will include residents from low income countries, Vietnamese residents and in some cases youth or student participants. Contributors will be acknowledged in the program, on the website and sponsorship backdrop/signage, and through direct introductions to the recipients of support. Customised Sponsorship Packages We understand that you may have your own innovative ideas on how to best align to WCDP 2011 activities. We therefore invite you to discuss with us the option to tailor-make a sponsorship package that best suits your organisation. Examples of specific sponsorship initiatives could include: Youth Drowning Prevention Forum aimed at bringing together the youth perspective from lifesaving agencies and researchers from across the globe Photographic Display and Competition aimed at creating a highly visual event throughout the conference

Participants attending the conference will not only get the chance to experience firsthand the challenges of preventing drowning in the Asian context, but will also enjoy the beauty of the city s landscape, with its dramatic mountains and lush rice fields, and the fun loving nature of its residents. As a city bordered on one side by an extensive coastline and split in two by the mighty Hanh River, safe interaction with water is something that is of concern to all residents of Danang. The city is the perfect location to discuss drowning prevention issues and enjoy Vietnamese culture. Amy Peden Australian Youth Ambassador for Development, SwimSafe program Danang Vietnam

Bangladeshi lives, especially in the rural areas, revolve around water. With climate change likely to increase the rate and severity of our annual floods and unfortunately the rate of drowning, the World Conference on Drowning is an important step in combating this surge. Over the last five years, we have worked to develop effective drowning prevention strategies and we look forward to exchanging ideas with our other international counterparts. Together we hope to radically reduce the amount of lives lost to drowning not only in Bangladesh but throughout the world. Dr AKM Fazlur Rahman, International Drowning Research Centre - Bangladesh
