We are delighted to offer RIVER LIFE IN BURGUNDY AND PROVENCE, a wonderful way to experience the true essence of life in these fabled regions of France. You will also learn to speak some French, making your visits to the lively village markets all the more enjoyable. Complementing the tranquil beauty of the Rhône River and its tributary, the Saône River, are first-class accommodations aboard the M.S. Prominent faculty and experienced English-speaking guides will accompany us throughout the program and talk about historical, cultural and contemporary France. Learn key phrases and pronunciation that will enable a more lively and personal interaction with locals during Parlez-vous français? the specially arranged introduction to the langue française. Experience the hospitality and charm of a typical French village during a private reception hosted by the nuns of the Convent of the Blessed Sacrament in Boucieu-le-Roi. Sample Burgundy s world-renowned wines and local cheeses and sausages during a private tasting at the exquisite Château Montmelas. Enjoy time on your own stroll along the lively Boulevard des Lices in Arles, enjoy views of Avignon and the river from the medieval Pont d Avignon or sip a glass of Beaujolais and observe village life from a sidewalk café. Tucked at the foot of Fourvière Hill, Lyon romances visitors with its covered pedestrian passages, elegant Roman architecture and charming Old Town. Inset above: Grape harvesting in Provence.

A stroll through Beaune reveals historic mansions, medieval half-timbered houses and, last but not least, the exquisite 15th-century Hôtel-Dieu. A quintessential example of Burgundian Renaissance architecture distinguished by its dazzling, multicolored glazed roof tiles, it reflects when the power of the Duke of Burgundy stretched from Flanders to The Netherlands. Its meticulously restored chambers provide a fascinating glimpse into life during the 15th century and hold an impressive collection of period art including the brilliant Last Judgement by Rogier van der Weyden. Watch enveloping morning mists drift above serene Provençal vineyards that yield vintages prized by connoisseurs around the world.

Stand in the footsteps of gladiators and centurions amid the grand ruins of Arles 2,000-year-old Roman Amphitheater. CLUNY Located amid the vineyards of the Saône-et-Loire département in Burgundy, Cluny evolved around the Benedictine Cluny Abbey (A.D. 910) and was one of the greatest centers of medieval Christianity. Indeed, the immense influence exercised by the pious Cluniac Order on the religious, intellectual, political and artistic life of the western world led Pope Urban II to tell its members in 1095, You are the light of the world. Only remnants of the sprawling abbey complex remain, a casualty of the revolutionary upheavals of 1793. Yet these beautiful and austere remnants still provide a fascinating glimpse of what was, until the construction of St. Peter s in Rome, the largest Christian basilica in the world. LYON In a nation that holds sacred the enjoyment of food and wine, Lyon occupies pride of place as France s capital of gastronomy. Ideally situated at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, this vibrant city of red-roofed houses spreads out beneath lofty Fourvière Hill ( the praying hill ), crowned by the ornate 19th-century Basilica of Notre Dame. Built from the wealth of Lyon s long-standing silk industry, almost 300 elegant Gothic and Renaissance mansions grace Vieux Lyon ( Old Lyon ), where the ancient quarters of St-Jean, St- Paul and St-Georges are linked by charming traboules narrow, covered pedestrian passageways. CULTURAL ENRICHMENT: Learn more about Lyon s centuries-old silk trade in a local silk studio. BEAUJOLAIS Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé! is the cry each November when the year s new vintage reaches the market. From the lovely vineyards of the Beaujolais des Pierres Dorées, the land of the golden stones, come France s youngest and fruitiest wines. In some seasons, this internationally recognized wine region produces more red wine than do the Burgundy regions of Chablis, Côte d Or, Côte Châlonnaise and Mâconnais combined. In the heart of the Beaujolais villages, enjoy a tour of the historic Château Montmelas hosted by Madame Delphine d Harcourt, whose family has lived in the castle since 1566. CULTURAL ENRICHMENT: Savor the château s wines with local cheeses and sausages, while Marcia Hadjimarkos, a highly regarded American pianist who has lived in Burgundy for 15 years, plays the fortepiano. BOUCIEU-LE-ROI In the heart of the Rhône Valley stands the untouched medieval hamlet of Boucieu-le-Roi, famous for its beautiful, 15th-century bridge spanning the Doux River. Here, Father Pierre Vigne, the legendary 18th-century missionary beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2004, founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament to educate the young and the sick. CULTURAL ENRICHMENT: The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament host a reception for us with the warm hospitality of a typical French village. Step into the enchanting world of 15th-century Burgundy at the historic Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune.

M.S. REMBRANDT The M.S. REMBRANDT, accented with rich woods, is testimony to the historical tradition of ship-building excellence. The M.S. REMBRANDT s smaller size, with only 39 cabins, offers intimate, informal and graceful comfort. The many large picture windows allow you to see into the very hearts of the idyllic countrysides of France, whether you are relaxing in the lounge, or in your cabin, or dining. The best vantage point, of course, is from the enticing chaises and chairs on the sun deck. Located on two decks, cabins are comfortably appointed and offer the latest amenities, including private bathroom, individual climate control, satellite television, direct dial telephone, closet space and hair dryer. Cabins on the main deck are twin-bedded and have two small windows. Upper deck cabins feature one picture window. Suites have a double bed and French balcony. Meals are served at single, open seatings in the main dining room and feature delectable cuisine made from the freshest local ingredients. The dining room is lined on both sides by large windows, allowing you to enjoy your dinner while watching the changing landscape. Professional and personalized service is provided by highly trained and experienced crew. Cabin Dining Room AVIGNON Throughout the 14th century, Avignon was the center of western Christendom when Pope Clement V arrived here after fleeing the turmoil of Rome in 1309. The next six pontiffs enlarged the city into one of the richest and most powerful in Europe, until the Great Schism with Rome in 1378 led to the eventual end of the Avignon Papacy in 1405. The grandiose Palais des Papes (Papal Palace), one of the largest châteaux-forts built in Europe during the Gothic era, is the primary reflection of Avignon s golden age and one of the most famous landmarks in France. Walk to the nearby Garden of the Popes and the Rocher des Doms, which offers panoramic views of the Rhône River Valley. At the river s edge, see the remaining four arches of the famous Pont d Avignon one of the most beautiful creations of the Middle Ages. Stroll along the well-preserved, 14th-century ramparts still encircling Avignon, one of the finest surviving examples of medieval fortification. CULTURAL ENRICHMENT: Meet a local resident at the VILLAGE FORUM who will discuss daily life in this beautiful and historic region. ARLES Few places on earth can match the distinctive joie de vivre of Arles. This archetypal Provençal city is home to one of the most majestic Roman monuments in France, the Amphitheater, built in the first century B.C. It is the largest constructed in France and second only to Rome s Colosseum in magnificence and grandeur. Arles 12th-century Cathedral of St-Trophime has a fascinating Last Judgement-themed portal, one of the finest examples of Romanesque sculpture. Arles is also associated with Vincent van Gogh, who lived here between 1888 and 1889; the subject of his famous Night Café is still open on the lively Boulevard des Lices. CULTURAL ENRICHMENT: American expatriate and Arles resident Janice Lert presents a lecture on the Rhône River.
