Transcription:

Can you believe it s 2010 already? It seems like yesterday we were all concerned about Y2K and all the bad things that might happen when the new millennium and new year of 2000 started. Now we are entering into the second decade of the new millennium. For the next year I m honored to serve as CCA President. We have some people leaving the Board at the end of 2009. Jim Enriquez served as President for the past 2 years and Member-at-Large for a year before that. Jim has guided the club through some challenging times, and through his efforts our club is stronger financially and has more members and activities. Bruce Mundy served as NCCC Governor for the past 8 years and has been most effective in ensuring we meet the various NCCC rules and requirements. Bruce has also built up considerable interest in autocross events, and several CCA members are now participating in those events, adding a new dimension to our club. Mike Terrey is also taking a break from the CCA Board after serving as 2009 Member-at-Large and 2008 Vice President. Mike has been an especially effective liaison with our sponsor Thorobred Chevrolet. Our 2008 and 2009 Treasurer, Patti Kerber, is looking forward to sitting in the back row at the business meeting and winning the 50/50 drawing. Patti has done a great job of improving the accounting of club finances over the past 2 years. Continuing on the CCA Board for 2010 are Vice President Bill Rhode, who is involved in almost every CCA activity; Secretary Janet Ray, who does a great job recording minutes and keeping us on track; Membership Chair Marge Rhode, who has actively recruited new members into the club, streamlined our membership application, and instituted online ordering of CCA merchandise; Activities Chair Rhonda Deacon who has kept our calendars busy; and Crosstalk Editor Patty Friesz who has revitalized Crosstalk with more photos and event reports. We have some new Board members joining us for 2010. Keith Deutscher will be taking over as Treasurer; Ray Jenkins will be our new NCCC Governor, George Ray will be the new Webmaster; and Dwight Gertsen will be the new Member-at-Large. I think we have a great Board going into 2010 with a good balance of experienced members and new members with fresh ideas. I am looking forward to working with them. We have had several fun activities at the end of 2009. Sandy Duhaime and Laura Halladay did a great job with the Annual Banquet hosted at a new location, the Mesa Marriot. Bruce and Sharon Lund hosted the Christmas Party at their home and we had a great time with over 40 members attending. Coming up are the Packages from Home packing party on January 30, 2010 and a couple of other activities still being finalized for January and February. If you have any ideas for new activities contact Rhonda Deacon. We are also looking for volunteers. Dave Friesz has volunteered to chair our annual Corvettes on the Green all Corvette car show at Julio G s Restaurant in Scottsdale on March 27, 2010. This is an important car show and fund raiser for our club and Dave will be looking for volunteers. We are off and running into 2010.. October 2009 CCA Thorobred Thunder Classic Chevy Show Show Chairmen George Ray Bill Rhode On October 24 th, Thorobred Thunder X took place at Thorobred Chevrolet. Preparation actually started a year ago with the coordinating of the date with Thorobred and NCCC. Then a few months in advance, vendors were scheduled, invitations were sent out to past participants, advertising was put in motion, the raffle was organized, the DJ was scheduled, trophies and t-shirts were ordered and the parking layout was designed. Then before we knew it, it was show time! Sounds like a lot of work, and it is, but with the help of many CCA members, it went smoothly. I must admit it s a bit of fun as well. This being the second year I ve coordinated, it got easier. Mostly because of help received from Jim and Esther, Bill and Marge and of course Mike Terrey. As the pre-registrations started to come in, our concerns about a low turn-out became evident. We first thought that the economic recession would slow things down but then a competing car show hosted by KOOL FM seemed to add to our dilemma. It s tough to compete with a car show that has its own radio station for advertising We ended up with 88 cars, an even split between 44 Corvettes and 44 Chevy powered. This generated $880 for Packages from Home, $10 per car from the registration. I m told that the spectators, participants and members alike made contributions to the PFH trailer. This made the PFH folks very happy. When I visited the PFH trailer I had the opportunity to try on a bullet-proof vest and was surprised by how heavy it was. 2

October 2009 CCA Thorobred Thunder Classic Chevy Show The show was smaller than last year but good fun was reported by all. The vendors reported an enjoyable show even though they didn t do as well. W. Steven Martin provided his talent once again. I think all will be back next year. This years raffle contributed nicely to the funds we raised for the club. Special thanks to Bob Caccamo for soliciting donations. The net proceeds for the entire event to CCA came in at $1,653.43. Not bad for having fun! There were lots of winners as we handed out 50 trophies, many raffle prizes and the 50/50 cash. Best Engine Drew Tennant 69 Camaro Best of Show-Chevy Best Interior Manfred Wagner 39 Chevy Coupe Best of Show-Corvette Angelo Fornado 04 C-5 Best Paint Sandy Wolf 06 C-6 As I look at the sign up sheet at the list of volunteers, it just about covers the entire club. Thanks to all of you: George Ray Bill Rhode Marge Rhode Mike Terrey Dave Friesz Patty Friesz Jim Kerber Patti Kerber Jim Wilson Dwight Gertsen Roger Cox Ray Jenkins Pat Jenkins Esther Enriquez Jim Enriquez Gail Baldacchino George Baldacchino Alison Stover Bud Stover George Haggerty Rita Haggerty Jim Gray Sharon Lund Sam Magee Becky Magee Keith Deutscher Janet Ray Lora Gertsen Sandy Duhaime Kathy Terrey Dave Golec Kathy Golec Bruce Mundy Bob Caccamo 3

November 2009 CCA Evening At the Broadway Palms Dinner Theater Event Planner - Patty Friesz On a beautiful fall evening, eighteen CCA members and prospective members enjoyed an extensive buffet dinner and musical revue, Smokey Joe s Cafe, at the Broadway Palms Dinner Theater in Mesa. The food was good and the show was fabulous. The rock n roll hits of songwriters Leiber and Stoller fired up the stage with a jammed packed two hour performance. As always the outstanding talent of the performers was impressive. The Theater always makes special accommodations for our Club with reserved parking for our Corvettes in front of the Theater. Everyone had a good time getting together and sharing the camaraderie. That s why I always enjoy booking the event. Patty Friesz

December 2009 Year- End Awards Banquet Event Planners Sandy Duhaime Laura Halladay CCA Santa Dan Furbee The 2009 Corvette Club of Arizona Award Banquet was held on December 5th in the Starlight Room of the Mesa Marriott Hotel. The venue was wonderful with reserved parking near the room. The attendees gave a thumbs up to the bountiful and delicious dinner buffet and a good time was had by all. Sandy Duhaime crafted CCA tree ornaments for all who attended and a fine job she did again. How does she come up with new designs year after year? The DJ played music all evening and conducted a fun on the premises scavenger game. Will Foster really got into it and was the first to offer a sock to the scavengers. 5

2009 Year End Awards Banquet Continued The outgoing Club officers were recognized for their work in 2009 and the 2010 incoming officers were welcomed to their new posts. Bill Rhode was selected as the Member of the Year, but was unable to attend and receive his award due to a death in the family. We all missed them and expressed our condolences. 2009 CCA Board 2010 CCA Board There were drawings for the 50/50 and for a number of door prizes. The highlight of the evening has to be Stroke n Santa. You never know what he will bring in his bag. Once again, Santa had his list of naughty CCA boys and girls for whom he had appropriate gifts. Jim Enriquez should never lock his keys in his car again with his belt loop keychain and Sandy Duhaime will never have to worry about snakes in her yard with her Snake-B-Gone spray. Rhonda Deacon will always know where to stand and Kathy Terrey will always have her head light handy for those untimely power outages. Keith Deutscher, Patty Friesz, Hugh Halladay, Mike Terrey, Janet Ray and Jim Kerber were all on Santa s list this year too. Thank you, Santa. We look forward to your appearance every year. So let this be a warning to everyone to be on your good behavior or Santa will be calling on you next year! Laura Halladay 6

Welcome To New CCA Members Joe & Bernice Grassel Bernice and Joe are happy to be back in CCA after a few years absence. They own a 2000 Pewter hardtop Vette. They have been married 23 years and have a daughter and two granddaughters living in the Dallas area. They love to travel and prefer vacations that include adventure. For example, several years ago they flew to Cusco, Peru to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. It was a four day hike through the Andes with two passes being in excess of 13,500 feet. It was absolutely breath-taking when on the fourth day they came to a place called Temple Of The Sun at 9500 feet and looked down on Machu Picchu which is approximately 8000 feet. While in Peru they also white water rafted the Urubumba River. On another expedition they endured the 15 hour flight to Sydney, Australia. While there they climbed the Sydney Bridge, dove on the Great Barrier Reef, hiked the Outback and climbed Ayers Rock. One of their favorite vacations was to Italy (Bernice s family s origin). They explored the length of country by train. Florence, Italy, is their favorite city in the world. Occasionally they do partake in less strenuous trips such as Mexico, Hawaii and cruises. Bernice is also quite the adventurer without Joe. She has backpacked New Zealand with a group of friends, bicycled the Netherlands and did a cattle drive on a working ranch in Montana. Along with travel they thoroughly enjoy their home, Corvettes, biking, golf, and especially their two Vizslas (dogs) and their cat. They also are HUGE Suns fans. Joe manages a trucking company that specializes in the entertainment industry and Bernice is a realtor. Joe also plays blues guitar as a hobby. Bernice, who was originally from Winnemucca, NV, has been in Arizona for over 35 years and Joe is a native son. They ve lived in California and Colorado but always return to beautiful Arizona. They thank everyone for welcoming them back into the club. They are looking forward to years of fun and exciting activities with the CCA. And CCA is so glad they re back! 7

Welcome New Members Mike & Joyce Mileskiewicz Mike and Joyce Mileskiewicz discovered CCA through John Marsh. They, too, are members of Solid Axle Corvette Club and love to work on restoring their C-1. Mike is currently working on their 61 after having completed his two C-2s, a 65 & a 67. He entered his silver C-1 in 2009 Thorobred Thunder and won 3rd place. Mike is a member of the National Corvette Restoration Society and has become a judge for them. Along with their love of old Corvettes, they are beginning to appreciate the joys of a newer one in their 07 Atomic Orange C-6 Z06 and are looking forward to participating in CCA drivers. Mike has retired from General Dynamics so now he can devote more time to working on his Vettes. Mike especially enjoys sharing restoration knowledge with others. Joyce owns her own Interior Furnishings Company. She represents several distributors of home furnishings and works with developers on model homes. She also enjoys reading and music. They both enjoy spending time with their Westie, Car-Lee, whom they claim rules the roost. Joyce is a native Arizonian and Mike moved here 33 years ago from Michigan. We are happy to have such Corvette enthusiasts join us and are looking forward to their involvement in CCA. 8

NCCC by Bruce Mundy: Roadrunner Region Awards Banquet will be held at Dave & Busters on February 13, 2010, after the autocross. Reimbursement for Governors meeting was submitted. Expenses of $199.67 for the Governors meeting were approved. Discussion was held regarding increasing the Governor s allotment for out of town meetings. Jim Enriquez motioned, Marge Rhode seconded, all approved to raise the Governor s allotment for out of town meetings to $500. Old Business Website: the banner has been fixed. The old domain (ccofaz.com) is automatically forwarding. 5 outstanding issues need to be fixed. Jim has tried to contact EVIT to get the issues fixed, but they aren t responsive. Jim contacted the host to see if they can correct the outstanding issues (contact us feature, search engine tags). Discussion regarding paying EVIT for website services; personal time and tax credit payments. Mike Terrey will find out how we do tax credits so we can email the membership. New Business: Christmas Party: Jim Enriquez opened the discussion around the recent email he sent asking board members to approve a $100.00 funding request for the upcoming Christmas party. The majority of the board responded to the email with an approval to use club funds to support the event. However, a question did arise concerning if the club should support the Christmas party since not all hosts have been reimbursed for some of their costs in previous years. And should the $2.50 fee have been waived for the Christmas party. Jim provided a written artifact titled "Corvette Club of Arizona Event Host Guidelines" (author and date unknown). Summary of the information states: "It is the intent that CCA events are self funded by the participants in the event at a minimum if not to make money for the club". In addition, the document goes on to say: "CCA will subsidize to some extent the following events with the submission of a proposed budget: Founder's Day, Julio G's car show, MMT, Thorobred Thunder, Year End Banquet and the Christmas party". The CCA Welcome notebook distributed to all new club members also states: "The board will also vote to subsidize some of the events that are sponsored by club members during the year, but this is done only under special circumstances". Based on this historical data and Jim's personal experience with CCA, the board has the discretion of supplementing the cost of club events, including the Christmas party. Supplementation of any event is at the discretion of the board based on the event, the specific request and available funds in the treasury. As discussion of the subject continued, there should be no need for the club to supplement Thorobred Thunder or Julio G's since both are fund raising events producing income for CCA. However, the club does approve advances for these two events to cover pre-event expenses which are repaid to the club from event proceeds. 13

At this point the discussion led to Bill Rhode's motion to approve supplementing the cost for Founder's Day, MMT, the Year End Banquet and the Christmas Party based on receipt of an event budget and availability of funds within the club treasury. Bill's motion was seconded by Janet Ray and all approved. Jim informed the board that after receiving their email approvals, additional Christmas party invitations had been extended to several new members and guests. Since the party list has grown, he offered the Christmas party hosts an option. They could either receive a $100 check to cover the proposed cost of the meat as they requested; or wait until the actual cost of the meat could be determined and provide CCA with a copy of the receipt for reimbursement. The latter option was wisely chosen by the hosts. Discussion regarding waiving the $2.50 fee for future events. Marge Rhode proposed, Bruce Mundy seconded and all approved: the club will continue to collect $2.50 per person per social event for all members in attendance, including hosts. Community service and fund raising events are excluded from the event fee. Patty Friesz will create a written proposal, for clarification purposes, of when the $2.50 should be and should not be collected at the next board meeting. Correspondence: None Meeting was adjourned at 9:20 PM Board Members in attendance: Patti Kerber, Bill Rhode, Jim Enriquez, Bruce Mundy, Janet Ray, Mike Terrey, Patty Friesz, Jim Kerber and Marge Rhode. Guests: George Ray, Jan Mundy, Rob Deacon and Sandy Duhaime.
