A Hong Kong-based Virtual Airline Hong Kong VFR Guide VOHK Training Team Version 1.2 Flight Simulation Use Only 5 March 2017

1 Introduction This Guide provides necessary information and guidelines for you to prepare for VOHK Flying Test 1. You MUST NOT use this Guide in real world aviation. 2 Sek Kong Airfield Information Sek Kong Airfield is a military airfield in New Territories, Hong Kong (12nm Northwest of the Hong Kong International Airport) completed in 1950, Hong Kong and it is opened for civilian use during weekends. It has a paved runway and the airfield is surrounded by terrain. ICAO Airport Code: Elevation: VHSK 50 ft AMSL Add-on Scenery Recommended: Scenery On Demand Dragoneye (Payware) Copyright 2017 Oasis Hong Kong Virtual Page 2

This chart is offered by IVAO Hong Kong Division. The Blue Zone is uncontrolled airspace (Class G) and is covered by Hong Kong Information. The Black Zone is controlled airspace (Class C) and is covered by Hong Kong Zone Control. Sek Kong airfield is located in SKARA, which is not covered by Hong Kong Informatio Copyright 2017 Oasis Hong Kong Virtual Page 4

3 ATC Communication All Radiotelephonies are highlighted in Yellow. There are four frequencies that you will have to contact with: Sek Kong Operations UNICOM (122.8) Sek Kong Traffic information (123.6) Hong Kong Information (122.4) Hong Kong Zone (120.6) Pilots should make blind call on both 123.6 and 122.8. Pre-flight ATC Check If in doubt, pilots should consult the online Hong Kong ATCs whether they offer services of Hong Kong Information or Hong Kong Zone via private message. Hong Kong Tower may extend his airspace to the whole Control Zone. 4 Fixed Wing Circuit From Cold & Dark to Take-off The VFR Circuit in Sek Kong Airfield is not a theoretical standard circuit as described in textbooks. The following flight will use a FSX default Cessna 172SP with callsign B-HOH. Before connecting to VATSIM or IVAO, the aircraft must be positioned out of the runway. It should be parked at X-ray disposal or the grass area near the threshold of runway 11 for default scenery. In FSX Press Y to slew the aircraft. After engine start, Sek Kong Operations, Cessna OH, request radio check. Sek Kong Operations: Cessna OH, Sek Kong Operations, I read you 5 by 5. After switching to Sek Kong Traffic information 123.6, Check whether toe brakes are functional. You are reminded to taxi at a brisk walking pace. Sek Kong Traffic, Cesnna OH taxiing within X-ray disposal. Copyright 2017 Oasis Hong Kong Virtual Page 5

Determine the departure runway by yourself. Assuming the wind is calm, therefore runway 11 is in use. Prior to entering the runway, hold your position until clear of any potential conflict. Make a radio call when ready. Undershoot means the displaced threshold area. Sek Kong Traffic, Cessna OH entering 11 undershoot. For the taxi checks, Attitude Indicator Erect DGI Synchronized with Compass Compass Serviceable (Whether the heading is increasing or decreasing) Turn Indicator - Ball Opposite Side Engine Performance Checks At the end of runway, park your aircraft where Base leg and Final leg are visible. Complete the Engine Performance Check. Before Take-off Align with the runway centerline and check the elevators trim and flaps settings. For Cessna 172, take off with clean configuration. Sek Kong Traffic, Cessna OH lining up runway 11. Sek Kong Traffic, Cessna OH rolling runway 11. Do not use the phrase Take-off. Apply full power to commence the takeoff roll. Early during the roll, check Sufficient RPM / Power Oil Temps / Press in Green Band ASI Increasing If any abnormal situation is observed, immediately abort the take-off. 5 Fixed Wing Circuit From Upwind to Landing 5.1 Upwind to Downwind Maintain a desired climb speed and make your first turn at 500ft (or 300ft above in Sek Kong). You may make a continuous turn from upwind to downwind because of the terrain constraints in Sek Kong airfield. Bank angle should not exceed 20 degrees. Maintain at the circuit altitude. Normally for a Cessna 172, the downwind speed should be 90 knots. For some high performance aircraft like Extra 300S, the downwind speed should be 120 knots. However, to keep the separation from other aircraft, lowering the airspeed is usually preferred instead of extending downwind. Maintain visual separation from other aircraft and obstacles. Sek Kong Traffic, Cessna OH, Downwind, full stop landing runway 11 (Intention) Monitoring the airspeed of the aircraft closely and prevent the aircraft from flying high speed. 5.2 Base to final The intentions could be, but are not limited to Touch and Go Full Stop Landing When the runway is at your seven o clock, start your turn onto the base leg. Another visual reference is Kam Tim River and a lake accompanied by a little hill as shown start turning base while overhead. (See the picture below) Prior to turning base, reduce your power to idle and expect a tight turn to final if necessary. Copyright 2017 Oasis Hong Kong Virtual Page 7

When the airspeed is within the white arc, extend the flaps. For Cessna 172, extend the flaps to 20 directly. Extend downwind leg if there is traffic on base leg or final until it passes abeam but the airspace infringement of North Border must be avoided. Turn to final and align with the runway. If you are looking for some visual references, reach 400ft while passing abeam the school in the picture below. Do not descend below 500ft without establishing the final. Remain clear of south side of the runway. (Intention) Sek Kong Traffic, Cessna OH final runway 11, Touch and Go / Full Stop Landing. 5.3 Landing When the aircraft is positioned above the displaced threshold, reduce power to idle (Adjust power accordingly to avoid low airspeed). Try not to touch down at the displaced threshold area. After the aircraft is brought to a complete stop, backtrack (make a 180 degree turn and taxi via) runway 11 and return to X-ray disposal. Sek Kong Traffic, Cessna OH backtracking runway 11. Remember to make a radio call when vacating the runway. Sek Kong Traffic, Cessna OH runway 11 vacated. 6 Tolo Zone 6.1 Outbound via Kadoorie Gap Make a radio call below in crosswind. Sek Kong Traffic, Cessna OH climbing to 1500ft for Kadoorie Gap outbound. Set transponder to mode C and report in Sek Kong Traffic Information (123.6). Sek Kong Traffic, Cessna OH Kadoorie Gap 1500ft, changing frequency to 122.4. Make first contact with Hong Kong Information (122.4) as below soon after switching. Maintain 1500ft in order to keep vertical separation from inbound traffic. Hong Kong Information, Cessna OH Kadoorie Gap for New Town 1500ft, 2 POB. Hong Kong Information will provide QNH and traffic information in New Town Zone if any. Hong Kong Information will reply as follows. Cessna OH, QNH1013, Squawk 5273, Traffic is Cessna IG at New Town. QNH1013, Squawk 5273, Copy the traffic, Cessna OH. Continue flying East and maintain 1500ft, then you will enter Tolo Zone over water. Hong Kong Information, Cessna OH, Tolo 1500ft. The upper limit of Tolo is 3000ft. Copyright 2017 Oasis Hong Kong Virtual Page 9

6.2 Kadoorie Gap Inbound From Tolo, enter New Town at 2000ft. Hong Kong Information, Cessna OH New Town at 2000ft. Hong Kong Information, Cessna OH approaching Kadoorie Gap for Rejoin, Cancel SAR, Changing Frequency to 123.6. Hong Kong Information will reply as follows. Cessna OH, flight plan terminated. Frequency change approved, good day. Change frequency to 123.6 and set Transponder to Standby mode. Sek Kong Traffic, Cessna OH approaching Kadoorie Gap for Rejoin at 2000ft. Identify all traffic in SKARA visually. Make the following blind call at point A. Sek Kong Traffic, Cessna OH all traffic identified, descending to 1500ft. Descend to 1500ft when clear of traffic. Maintain 1500ft until it is safe to descend to circuit altitude at B. Sek Kong Traffic, Cessna OH descend to circuit altitude. After rejoin you should be able to fly a circuit with the techniques in the previous chapter. 7 Summary After reading this tutorial, you will be able to fly from Sek Kong for local VFR flights. Content is based on the Internet and interviews with local pilots. Copyright 2017 Oasis Hong Kong Virtual Page 10
