RETIREMENT CLUB NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2011 No 264 Manton Lane MK41 7PF Tel: 01234 350681 Dear Friends JULY WALK contributed by Mike Lock Eighteen walkers and one dog left the Three Horseshoes in Renhold in warm, partly cloudy conditions and walked north alongside several large fields of oilseed rape and past a large wooded area. We passed Woodfield farm and along Workhouse End and entered the grounds of Howbury Hall, which contain a large number of sheep, spread over an extensive area. Whilst crossing this area some of our group were disturbed to discover a dead sheep which they duly reported to staff at nearby farm buildings. As we left the Howbury estate towards Norse Road cemetery we paused for a group photograph where we were joined by several small black pigs (see photo.) We returned up the hill towards Renhold Church, with fine views to the south, passed through the church grounds and alongside Great Early Wood and back into Renhold and a welcome lunch. N.B. There is no walk in August so the next one is on Wednesday, 14th September. Further details next month. One Hundred Years of Aviation August 1911 contributed by John Cherry 2nd Today Harriet Quimby, known as the Purple Lady due to the colour of her elegant flying outfit, gained her pilots licence to become the first official American woman to fly, although the first woman pilot in the U.S. was Blanch Stuart Scott who was taught to fly by Glenn Curtiss although he believes that a woman s place is on the ground. Blanch is billed as the Tomboy of the Air at air shows. 1
3rd Today a Voisin biplane took off from the airfield at Issy-les-Moulineaux, it touched down on the river Seine using its amphibious landing gear before returning to Issy. 18th Today at Farnborough Geoffrey de Havilland began test flights of the Royal Aircraft Factory FE2 biplane that is fitted with a pusher engine. 29th At the Brooklands race track today Mrs. Hilda B Hewlett became the first British woman to gain a pilots licence. Other notable female pilots include, Helene Detrieu of Belgium known as Girl Hawk Helene has aroused comment because she prefers flying without the support of her corsets which she says are too confining. The first woman ever to gain a flying licence officially was Elise Deroche of France, who on landing her Voisin biplane after the test said Flying does not rely so much on strength as on physical and mental coordination. She came to regret this statement when she crashed her machine at Reims during a competition. Opposition to female pilots has not been confined to the U.S. In Germany Melli Beese gained her licence despite sabotage by male colleagues who drained her fuel tank and tampered with her steering gear. MARYLYN AND RAY S SUMMER EVENT We d all like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to Marylyn and Ray for the wonderful afternoon we spent in their garden, (and eventually house when the rain started!). The company and food were excellent and the talk enthralled the audience. Many thanks again. 2
