ITINERARY This trip will require quite a bit of high-intensity walking on uneven cobblestone streets along with stairs where an elevator is not always available. Participants must be able to walk unassisted. DAY 1 friday, april 26 Lisbon (D) Arrive Lisbon International Airport (LIS). Suggested flight TAP AIR PORTUGAL 208, JFK>LIS arrives at 11:15am. (Departs JFK at 11:25pm on Thursday, April 25.) Checkinto 5 Star Hotel Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade (or equivalent.) 3:30 pm Meet & Greet, Mixer & Orientation. 5:00 pm INTRODUCTION TO PORTUGUESE LEGAL AND POLITICAL SYSTEMS Presentation by João Tiago Silveira, Portuguese attorney and Professor of Law at the University of Lisbon. In his presentation, our esteemed professor will provide a high-level overview of Portuguese legal and political systems and basic principles of Portuguese commercial, civil and criminal law and procedures. Historical aspects of Portugal s Roman-German civil law tradition, relevant legal trends, as well the relationship of Portuguese and European Union law, will be discussed. 7:00 pm Welcome dinner at a local Fado Bar in the Alfama neighborhood with musical demonstration. Fado is a distinctly Portuguese musical genre characterized by emotional, passionate and sometimes mournful tunes and lyrics. Tonight, we enjoy a traditional Portuguese dinner in an intimate setting at one of Lisbon s infamous Fado bars. In 2011, Fado was recognized on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. DAY 2 saturday, april 27 Lisbon & Belém (B,L) Complimentary breakfast is served daily at the hotel. 9:30 am Lisbon city tour with local architect. Please be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes! Our first visit is the hilltop fortress, St. George s Castle, to enjoy stellar views of the city and time to stroll in the beautiful gardens. 10:30 am Continuing downtown we visit the cosmopolitan neighborhood of Chiado, picturesque Bica, and central Baixa districts. Baixa is a newer part of the city built after the 1755 earthquake that devastated Lisbon. Here we learn about the city s rebuilding plan that changed the shape of the new Lisbon city center. Free time to circle the majestic Praça do Comércio before departing for Belém. 12:00 pm Arrive Belém, an UNESCO world heritage site, located on the shore of the Tagus River at the entrance to the Port of Lisbon. About 4 miles west of the Lisbon city center, many of Portugal s most famous landmarks are located in this area.

At Belém s riverfront we see the Belém Tower, a small fortress island on the banks of the river and part of Lisbon s Old World defense system. Also on the riverfront we see the massive sculpture Monument to the Discoveries, depicting Henry the Navigator at the helm of a large galleon commemorating the significance of maritime exploration in Portuguese history. Group lunch at the quaint neighborhood restaurant, Maestrias Tasca Nova. Here we enjoy a tasting of traditional yet refined Portuguese favorites. At lunch we will be joined by Portuguese attorney Pedro Sousa Uva to discuss Hot Topics and Legal Trends in Portuguese law including Artificial Intelligence in International Arbitration and Blockchain Technology in EU legal systems. 3:00 pm After lunch, remainder of the afternoon free. Consider exploring more of the Belém complex on your own or return to hotel. Evening In Belém, some may choose to visit the old-world Carriage Museum or the famous Pastéis de Belém to savor the traditional Portuguese egg tart pastry. Others may choose to visit Jeronimos Monastery dating back to the early 1500s, and one of the finest examples of Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline architecture. This Monastery is home to the tomb of the infamous explorer, Vasco de Gama. Before returning to the hotel: optional visits to Lisbon s renowned Time Out Market and the LX Factory, a hub for Portugal s entrepreneurs and start-up communities. Dinner on your own. DAY 3 Sunday, April 28 Lisbon, Cascais, Sintra (B,L,D) 9:00 am Day trip to the majestic resort town of Sintra, a longtime royal sanctuary and summer home for Lisbon s elite. Sintra s mountains, forested terrain, proximity to the ocean and unique Moorish and Manueline style palaces define Sintra s breathtaking and one-of-a-kind landscape. Today s day trip will savor Sintra s fairy-tale setting but also escape the average tourist slog, including a visit to nearby Cabo de la Roca. From Cabo de la Roca, Continental Europe s westernmost point, we enjoy the stellar views of dramatic sea cliffs from this picturesque overlook. 12:30 pm Group lunch in Cascais or Azenhas do Mar. 2:30 pm Return to Lisbon. Free time for shopping or R&R.

3:00 pm Optional Visit to the Museu Nacional do Azulejo (National Tile Museum). Located in a former Convent founded by Queen Leonor in 1509, this heritage Museum is dedicated to the decorative ceramic tiles or azulejos of Portugal from the 16th century to modern times. 4:30 pm Return to hotel. 8:00 pm Lisbon Farewell Dinner at the trendy Insolito rooftop restaurant. DAY 4 monday, april 29 Lisbon, Óbidos, Coimbra, Porto (B,L) 8:00 am Hotel check-out, board bus for day trip through Central and Northern Portugal, towards our destination of Porto. 9:00 am Before leaving Lisbon, we visit Parque das Nações, a recently redeveloped and trendy area of the city situated against the Tagus River full of green spaces and public art and also home to Portugal s Campus of Justice. Guided tour of the Campus of Justice and presentation by Portuguese attorney Sandra Hota e Silva on Legal Aid and Access to Justice in Portugal. A representative of the Orden dos Advogados (Portuguese Bar Association), Sandra and her staff maintain an impressive legal aid program working with nearly 12,000 attorneys providing services to more than 200,000 cases annually, with a budget of almost 40 million Euros funded by the Portugues Ministry of Justice. Option for non-attorneys: Oceanário de Lisboa (Lisbon Aquarium) or take a ride on the Telecabine cable car for sweeping views of this portion of the city. 11:00 am Depart North for our journey towards Porto. Time permitting, we stop in the town of Bombarral to see the Bacalhôa Buddha Eden garden park. In 2001, wealthy Portuguese art patron José Berardo was inspired to create this lovely park in response to the destruction of the giant Buddhas in Afghanistan by ISIS. We continue to Óbidos, one of Portugal s best preserved medieval towns. We enjoy a bit of free time to stroll the cobblestoned streets, shop at the local boutiques, taste the local Ginja a traditional Portuguese liqueur infusion of sour cherries and spices. No visit would be complete without seeing the fascinating Óbidos Castle. Legend has it that in the year 1148, Dom Afonso Henriques and his troops disguised themselves as cherry trees to capture this Castle from the Moors. Henriques became Portugal s founding father and first King. Group lunch before departing towards Coimbra. 2:30 pm Depart for Coimbra, one of Portugal s oldest cities and its former capital during the Middle Ages. 4:00 pm Arrive in Coimbra to visit to the University of Coimbra. Tour of the historic University campus and Faculty of Law. In existence for over 180 years, the law school is one of Portugal s most prestigious. 5:00 pm EU & PORTUGUESE NATURAL RESOURCES LAW Presentation organized by the Department of Advanced Studies in Energy Law at the University of Coimbra. In this presentation, select faculty and researchers will discuss issues of environmental protection, public regulation, climate change, emerging issues in tax and administrative law, as well the safeguarding of sovereignty of states.

6:30 pm Depart for Porto, Portugal s second largest city. 8:00 pm Arrive Porto, check-in to Flores Village Hotel & Spa or Hotel Infante Sagres (or equivalent). Evening Dinner on your own. DAY 5 tuesday, april 30 Porto (B,L) Morning Breakfast and coffee served daily in your hotel. Walking tour of Porto s City Center. Please remember to wear comfortable shoes! Located along the Douro river, Porto was originally an outpost of the Roman Empire and is today one of the oldest cities in Europe. Not so coincidentally, one of Portugal s famous exports, port wine, is named after the city. In 1703, the Methuen Treaty established trade between Portugal and England and the production of port wine gradually fell into the hands of British firms. Even today, the vast majority of port cellars carry their original English names. 11:00 am Guided visit of the Palacio da Bolsa, Porto s old Stock Exchange Palace and Courthouse. Featuring a mixture of architectural styles, the construction of this building began in 1842 and took nearly 70 years to complete. We tour the complex and see the fully restored Commercial Courtroom. READING BETWEEN THE WINES: An overview of wine laws and regulation in Portugal Presentation by local practitioners / representatives of the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro and Porto (IVDP). In this briefing, we will learn some of the technical terms about wine and understand the most important regulations for winemakers and exporters in Portugal. Producers are governed by the IVDP, with specific requirements concerning geographic denomination, aging terms, and labeling codes for varietal vs. blends. Topics of intellectual property, consumer protection, export/import, and local real estate law will also be discussed. This lecture will take place at the Palacio da Bolsa. 1:00 pm Group lunch and wine pairings at the Palacio da Bolsa. After lunch, we cross the river to the city of Vila Nova de Gaia (or simply Gaia for short), to visit some of the area s historic port lodges. 3:30 pm Port tasting at Graham s port lodge or Taylor s, with lovely views of the river and Porto. Remainder of afternoon free. Some may decide to stay in Gaia for additional port tastings. Evening Group Dinner at Casa D oro with panoramic views of the Douro River. Optional evening entertainment at the Rivoli theater or the Casa da Música. Cultural calendar pending.
