DAY 1 WHO, WHERE, WHY, WHEN?

PA STANDARDS & OBJECTIVES STANDARDS OBJECTIVES 1. Identify and discuss the main characters in the Iliad 2. Explore where it took place 3.Explain and discuss the actual validity of the Trojan War 4. Discuss the time period of the Trojan War

We are going to discuss the Trojan War. The Trojan War was the basis for the Iliad composed by Homer (who we ll talk about tomorrow) We are going to break it down into 4 parts I. Who fought in the Trojan War 2. Where was it fought 3. Why was it fought 4. When was it fought BUT FIRST A WORD OF WARNING.

The short answer is NO ONE KNOWS. There is evidence that something happened but did it happen the way Homer said? By Wednesday you will be able to form your own opinion I know but I m not telling.

We will introduce the people mentioned by Homer and where they were from. If they were real or not, that will be up to you to decide. Let s begin with the Greeks

GOLDEN MASK OF AGAMEMNON. WE LL LEARN MORE ABOUT IT ON WEDNESDAY

Agamemnon was king of Mycenae He was the brother of Menelaus (who we will meet next) The Greeks at this time were scattered kingdoms. There was no one king of the Greeks. Agamemnon was a powerful ruler and lead the Greeks into battle but was not the ruler of all Greeks

Marble bust of Menelaus

Menelaus was the king of Sparta He was the brother of king Agamemnon He was married to Helen (we ll learn about her more later)

ACHILLES DRAGGING THE DEAD BODY OF HECTOR IN FRONT OF TROY Painter: Franz Matsch

The greatest warrior of the Greeks A demigod. His father was Peleus, king of the Myrmidons, his mother was Thetis, goddess of the sea. The Myrmidons were a mythical people and we have no evidence of them. But the Greeks believed they existed. So that makes me think.

Any other mythical figures in Greek mythology? Google the term Greek mythological figures Find one and then write it on the board. You have 1:30 seconds.

TROY

Priam killed black-figure amphora, ca. 520 510 BC King of Troy His sons are Paris and Hector (we ll learn about those two in a minute) Killed during the siege of Troy

Paris, in "Phrygian dress", a second-century CE Roman marble (The King's Library, British Museum)

Youngest son of Priam Fell in love with Helen (again we will meet her later) wife of Menelaus king of Sparta Either kidnapped her or they ran away together back to Troy

Oldest son of Priam Greatest warrior of the Trojans Killed by Achilles

PIT STOP 1 1. Who were the Greeks we talked about? A. Priam, Paris, Hector B. Agamemnon, Menelaus, Achilles C. Paris, London, Rome D. Mr. C, Mrs. Burns, Mr. Radio, Mrs. Malloy

PIT STOP 1 Cont.. 2. Who were the Trojans we talked about? A. Priam, Paris, Hector B. Agamemnon, Menelaus, Achilles C. Paris, London, Rome D. Mr. C, Mrs. Burns, Mr. Radio, Mrs. Malloy

But why was the Trojan War fought? Any guesses? Take the mic or type it into the chat

In Guido Reni's homonymous painting (1631, Louvre, Paris),

Wife of King Menelaus of Sparta In some versions of the story she runs away with Paris. In others she is kidnapped. According to Homer she is the most beautiful woman in the world. She is the Face that launched a thousand ships

If the Trojan War really took place it happened in the 13 th or 12 th century B.C. (over 3,000 years ago) It would have taken place during the Late Bronze Age. Why do you think they call it the Late Bronze Age

The Trojan War may or may not have happened. If so it was fought by Greek Kingdoms of the Late Bronze Age against the Trojans from Anatolia (modern Turkey) The war was fought over Helen who was either kidnapped or ran away with Paris, son of King Priam of Troy. The cast of characters is huge. The story was told by Homer.who may or may not have existed (more about him tomorrow)

Over the wire is a list of links about the history of the Trojan War. Look over a few of them tonight. Once we begin our joint English/History paper these will be of great help Tomorrow we will talk about Homer
